“What Dogtown did, the image and the impact they left, World Industries absolutely left the same imprint, but in a different way”
-Jesse Martinez

MAN WHO SOULED THE WORLD
(Steve Rocco, Rodney Mullen, Jason Lee, Johnny Knoxville, Danny Way…)
To the uninitiated, skateboarding is typically viewed as a teenage triviality, a fad or a stage, but to more than 50 million people around the world it's a lawless religion to live and die by. The anti-authoritarian counter-culture surrounding skateboarding has had a far-reaching impact on society and generated some of the most unlikely cult heroes of the modern age.

In the legendary wake of Dogtown and Z-Boys, Whytehouse Productions’ “THE MAN WHO SOULED THE WORLD” documents the story of skateboarding’s most revolutionary figure, Steve Rocco and World Industries, the controversial skateboard company that shamelessly pushed the limits and transformed the skateboard world by utilizing tactics of manipulation and ambushed the corporate world to rewrite the rules and usher in a new era of skater-owned companies when everyone else told them it could not be done. Steve Rocco, with a little help from his friends - Rodney Mullen, Marc McKee, Mark Gonzales, Jason Lee, Natas Kaupas, Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville - created a cultural revolution that changed the face of skateboarding forever.

Server trouble
On 9/27/2007 Adam wrote in from United States  (198.144.nnn.nnn)

From the webmaster..

Sorry for the recent downtime. I just performed a full virus scan and rebuilt the database just to make sure there were no internal issues. But I suspect ill-behaved site crawlers are doing this, i.e. overloading our www server with thousands of simultaneous requests and I'm taking countermeasures against it.

I've also just put in place a remote site monitor that emails me if the server isn't responding appropriately so any future outages shouldn't be so long.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.. I know some of you attending the slalom comp this weekend are using Ncdsa.com to coordinate meetings, etc.

My 19 yr old son recently has been diagniosed with Buerger's Disease. It is a vascular disease brought on by smoking. It affects 20-40 yr men, seldom women, and there is no cure. YOU MUST STOP SMOKING or lose a limb. My son has it in his hand and we are looking into treatment. Talk to your doctor about straegies to help you quit. Medications are available to ease your cravings. You cannot use a patch or gum. No Nicotine in your system. Your options for treatment: Medications to improve blood flow, surgery to cut the nerves in the affected area to control pain, Amputation, if infection or gangrene occurs. PLEASE DON'T SMOKE. Thank you.

One of our stats tables had ballooned to over 2M rows which is well above what our database can easily handle. Older records were archived and I'm hoping the site will return to stability with the smaller database. Page load times should be improved too.

Commuting is hell sometimes
On 7/27/2007 Chris Miller wrote in from United States  (64.128.nnn.nnn)

So, every day I skate down the hill to my work. There is this one nice freshly paved road that is just a cool 20-25mph maybe 3/4 mile cruise before I get the the main road. Or at least it is when there is no wind or a tailwind.

So far this year I have had like 1 tailwind and a handful of days with no wind. Every other day there has been a headwind. The road goes from E to SE to S back to SE then S then SE again. I walk out of my house and there is a 1mph wind out of the NW. This should be a more or less light tailwind down the hill, but by the time I get 100 yds from my house, it has turned into a 5mph headwind. In the last few months I have skated to work with wind out of the NW, W, SW & N. It is always a headwind down this road. And it always gets stronger. I have been skating down the hill watching a flag blow towards what would be 1:00ish but at ground level it is a total headwind and I end up pushing downhill.

Is this just that damn George Bush messing with me again? Can someone please ask him to try to get Chaney to adjust his secret Haliburton weather machine to make this stop? Or can the city redo the hill to make it steeper or something? This totally SUCKS!!!

IMHO, Anyone who sees something weird, IE, wrong, on this site probably ought to post a vote. It would help keep the riff-raff from gaining any foothold.

NYC Longboarding Assoc's Spring Race in Central Park
On 6/6/2007 Fred Mahe and Ian Nichols wrote in from United States  (161.15.nnn.nnn)

By Sacha Lecca:
>> Central Park Race Saturday 2nd June<<
I once heard that New York City originally planned for a series of smaller individual parks each dedicated to a different nationality which caused problems and much fighting from the ethnic groups and so NYC built one big ass park for all, New York's Central Park.
Time to race.
This annual event is a race around the outer loop (about 6 miles) complete with obstacles (cyclists, runners, horse drawn carriages, cops a plenty, tourists, park rangers, squirrels). The weather the awesome, sunny and hot, more like a mid summer day.

The rider's of the 2007 race were instructed to meet outside the entrance to the park, good planning as the number of riders grow each year, this year, we hit over 100 riders for the first time, to the delight of many gawking tourists..

Needing to meet outside and the large number of riders combined to create a situation where the start was less official than desired. Very loose, but this years winner was once again Kasper (riding Earthwing) who surely must've started at Strawberry Fields, anyone actually see him at the start? His (un)official time was 21:36. Adam Colton (Loaded) in for second place. There was great commraderie as those who finished, greeted the rest. Great vibe.
The prizes, it was decided after calm deliberation, would be distributed based not on finishing times (ahem, loose start), but to those who traveled the fartherest to attend, those with beat up boards, youngest racers, a couple for female riders, etc. The giveaway then truned into a controlled free for all.
Then off to the Central Park boathouse, for the after-party where fun was had by all, everything from the nice cold Coronas, to great old stories from Cliff Coleman and a great chill time.

Here are pictures taken by Sacha Lecca. ( sachalecca@gmail.com )

PSR, I get emailed by our server when two Flag Moderator votes are cast on any post. Since there were few non-bot visitors to the unlisted Stopping forum you were probably the only person casting such votes. I'm curious.. how were you accessing that page? Via a bookmarked URL or from a link on Ncdsa.com?

Unwanted gunk
On 6/5/2007 Adam wrote in from United States  (198.144.nnn.nnn)

The old Stopping forum was converted to the new Sliding & Stopping forum some time ago and the Stopping link was removed from Ncdsa's menu. I then started using it as a honey pot as it was diverting (harmlessly and invisibly, I though) a few spambots. But I just realized that the Stopping page was accessible via links on the Summary page and the Pageview Totals page.. now fixed. The 12 spams that were showing until just a few minutes ago were but the tip of the iceberg (422 total).

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

To the Moderator of this WEBSITE!!
I've been posting here for damn near 9 years, and I've NEVER SEEN SUCH GARBAGE as what's been ALLOWED to subsist on the STOPPING page for, what, 3 MONTHS now?!?!?!!!
What the Heck is going on???
Do YOU Own this place, or do THEY???!!!
If THEY DO, I'm GONE!!!!
HELLO!! There are KIDS out there, one's I've Brought to this place, to skating, to snowboarding, and You let THIS CRAP, UTTER F&%$#@*G GARBAGE, STINKING, CRAP-type JUNK fill up THESE Pages??!!

NO!

GET ON IT, FIX THIS!

Skateboarding, as it was, in the 'good old days', didn't include pornographic icons on the bottoms of boards. I know we're unfortunately Past that (just look at Bacon boards, yuck...), but DO NOT let Smut Linger where it's a 'Click' away from a kid who might otherwise be looking to longboard, slalom, ride pools or Surf the Street. I'm tired of this bull$h!# game of "we didn't put it here"... REMOVE THE UNCALLED FOR CRAP!!

Thanks in Advance!

May your Spambots actually Work....
