I made my first longboard out of an old trick water ski.
It is 48" long and about 8" inches wide. I sanded it down and
varnished and made it look great. I mounted the trucks on
the under side to give it camber. When I ride it and turn
hard it flexes and snaps like crazy. I was really happy with
the way it turned out.

i have made a variety of boards ranging from 80's style surfboards to peanut shaped ones. My best is a gravity board which was
about 6 ft long, and was cracked about a foot off the bottom, I just reshaped the bottom and added another peice of wood as a brace
and it works as good as new.

I have just completed a longboard 48x9.5 for my son. It
turned out great, but now I want to paint it and am not
sure what kind of paint to use that is durable enough for
heavy use. Does anyone know what kind of paint the skateboard manufacturers use on there boards?

My friend simply took 1/2 inch thick particle board from an old shelf, screwed in the trucks & wheels and ta-da! He has the best bootsie board I've ever seen. It's worth a few laughs but hey, it works.

I got some 1/4" 5 ply and cut out my plan shape 2 times.
I then traced the shape of my board on an old junky piece
of ply and nailed strips of wood along the edge of the
traced line and a block at the tail(for concave and kick)
I then got my 2 pieces of 5 ply,put heaps of epoxy resin
between the 2 pieces, and set them on my form. Then I cut a
2 by 4 the right length set it on top of my board and drove
the car on to the 2by 4 to bend the wood on to my form.
after about 20 hours I drove the car off and got my board and
rounded the rails and painted and varnished it. It turned
out real cool. But I realized you dont need Kick in a 50"
deck if your gonna do ollies and stuff you may as well ride
a new school deck. Im making another board now with no kick
and just a slight concave.fhsdhgbbbbbdhgfhuyiuufgywwwertrt

I bought a sector 9 board about a month ago. I love it but I
want something different than other people. I am going to build my
own longboard. I am going to laminate a picture to the bottom.
I found some good 8 ply mahogany at a marine suppy place pretty
cheap.

Hi,
I'm want to make a longboard with a kicktail and possibly
a nose kick. I'm planning on 5 layers of 1/8-inch birch
or maple. I've figured out how to make a press to bend the
kicktails when I laminate them. But I have a question.
Normal plywood is a laminated with the grains on alternate
plys going different directions to give it more strength,
but I would think is unnecessary for a skateboard, because
in most cases, it's only going to be 8-10 inches wide. Does
anyone know if this is correct? Should I do one or two of
the plys with the grain going crossways or is this
unnecessary?
Let me know what you think. Thanks
Chris

The originator of the classic look longboard skate was Doug Yartz, out of Goleta, Ca. These boards were made out of pine, for a light weight board and soon cracked. This material was obviously not what the doctor ordered. The decks included hand paint jobs and looked just like Robert Augusts in The Endless Summer! Doug has stopped shapping skates now and is doing his gig to surfboards. If your looking for a great backyard board (Surf) you will find Doug at Surf Country in Goleta, Ca. If you see him, tell him to go back to skates and use a 1/4 - 7 ply birch (found at a good lumber yard). If you are one of those posers out there trying to put tail and rocker in your deck, GET A CLUE! Lets make a move to get rid of these pansy decks that are just new school reject designs. yours truly

I am from the beautiful peninsula down south called Palos Verdes. I used to surf back home but now I am stuck up here in UC Berkeley. I do not have a car so it takes me 2 hours going and 2 hours coming home to my small dorm room froom Ocean Beach, so I have only gone three times over the whole semester. So, I got me a gravity board and bomb hills at night and also to class. The streets are nice here. There are a plenty of other longboarders here also but I only know one of them cause I am a freakin freshmen and dont know anybody. I want to make a board for myself so please send me info on making longboards. Also so, if you live up here in Berkeley and have a car and go to the beach. please have the generosity to give a young bro a ride. If you have any tips on longboarding also, please send.

Mike

p.s. There is a long-haired blonde guy who rides a huge oak board up here in Berkeley. Hey, you are awesome.

I just finished building my first board a few weeks ago,
and it rides like a dream. I used 15/32" plywood for a
deck - 48 inches long, and 8 inches wide. It's straight,
with elliptical ends with a 5" intermediate axis. On the
bottom, I cut a Kastle Slalom ski to fit along the center
of the deck, and screwed the trucks through the deck and
the ski. The ski provides the perfect support and flex
for my weight (around 150lbs) and the plywood just enough
lateral resistance to carve turns. I stole the trucks from
my neighbor's kid (Venture, I think...) and put some
borrowed ABEC-5 Terminator bearings in. The wheels are
Kryptonics Route 65s bought on Oahu this summer. Under
the trucks are two risers, one squishy plastic .5 inch
and one hard plastic .5 inch. The risers are flat, but the
differential thickness of the ski from tip to center to
tip angles the risers in slightly. The trucks are 8 inches
in from the ends of the board.
I bought materials to make several more for friends,
and if anyone is interested I would be happy to manufacture
for cost of materials and shipping only. (About 15$ for deck
- the skis come free from the Breckenridge ski patrol)

Well, I guess you could say that my board will be unique.
I am planning on designing a skateboard mor like a car really. It is going to have baby moon hub caps, a tailpipe and one of thoughs bar bumbers that keep the lights protected incase of a car reck. I am not sure what else will be on it but if you would like to see it E-mail me and when it is done you will be the first to see it.

I found a piece of wood under my granparents house. I remember using it to make a homemeade pinball machine about 20 years ago. Anyway the pinball section doesn't work anymore (all the rubber bands broke) so I used the other end to make a deck. It's about 48" x 9" and the aged timber has come up really well with a good sand and about 6 coats of varnish. Next project is home made cruiser using glued pieces of 1/8" single ply to enable kicktail etc. Do it on the cheap (it's about $200 here for a finished longboard). It's more fun that way.

I have already made one board now and helped produce two of my friends' boards and am now ready to make another. This time I'm goin for a wider (12") and more round shape. I just get a 5 ply piece of wood and make it about 5'. Then I add designs, an added support piece, and trucks. On my last one I even put on a carpet, but it ripped off.
