i'm experimenting with wood to use and i've already cut 2 decks, one out of 1/2" mahogany (beautiful flex, best deck i ever made but only 6" wide) and another, my current, out of 3/4" poplar (no flex at all; it's like a slab of granite). both are solid hardwood. i was thinking of grabbing this sheet of 1/2" birch ply (furniture grade, 5ply) and was wondering if it'd hold me...i weigh 150. i just don't want to go and buy the wood and cut a deck only to have it break under me. thanx.

I came across a pair of water skiis at a garage sale for only
ten bucks! My buddy and I made two boards out of them and
they work great. They're a little skinny but you can still
bust a good slide with the right wheels. It's great for
bombing too because the wheel base is so long. Happy skating!

Want suspension for your board? Thats right, suspension.
We just got the patent (US patent 5,947,495) and will build one
to your specs (spring compression and travel is adjustable!)
Check it out at npdlandboard.com
Any skateboard wheel will fit on it, not just off-road wheels.
We've got a 42" full suspension (2x QuadFLEX Suspension +
Santa Cruz deck) that rides killer.

I plan on making a longboard with an old snowboard. I plan on using the offroad wheels. I also want to be able to put my windsurfing sail on the board. I weight about 170 and I am afraid the board will not support me and the sail. Has anyone tried to reinforce a snowboard. do you think i will have to ?

Aircraft-Spruce.com they only seem to have plywood up to 1/4inch thick which seems strange but you could layer it up with epoxys and fiberglass or carbonfiber they send out a real thick free cataloge and you just go to their web sit and click in a square and tell them where to send it.

capping both ends of a steaming pipe could get tricky,it would presure steam the wood, but I'd be worried about possibly building a pipe bomb by accident,or getting sprayed, overheating car radiator style,so steam at your own risk and send pictures into the crash page if you screw up.

Somebody gave me a tip on steambending, for thin strips use a pipe plug one end ,like a cap that screws on put a little water in and heat it. Put the strip of wood in, and have a solid bending jig built, so the strips bend consistant. Maybe with a big pipe you can steam a bunch of strips all at once.

Aircraft Spruce has a glue called polyepoxy I'm gonna give that a shot ,they say it has two curing phases that supposed to make it better than all others a quart kit costs sixteen bucks ,a quart of epoxy should go pretty far.

Herb yourve on the trip, building boards is great, ive done various decks, between 8&10 inches wide,35 to 62 inches long.all verticle laminated, between 8&15 strips(depending on the timber used)per board, never done anything special other than apply some acid to oily timbers to help with gluing.carbon rods sound groovy, what about just biscuits?or tounge & groove with a router?ive also put nose/tail blocks to deflect shock waves on impact with......,definitly put stronger stringers where trux will sit.the spruce will be cool with some dark stringers, possibly similar to a poplar board which had 15 strips, had to insert a plate in top of board to stop the bolts socketing the timber.what glue are you to use in the lamination?where is/was the ac tradeshow?

I'm starting a new deck, I gonna biuld a edge gluing frame that will line up strips of various woods (all equal thickness) and then apply pressure. The wood I'll use will be 3/4 inch sitka spruce, which the aircraft supply cataloge descibes as "the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood on earth" ,its longgrain mil.spec.stuff but its probabaly kind of soft ,spruce ,regardless of how high grade it is ,is still pine.I'll cut some stingers of harder wood and line them up with where the truck holes are, and maybe a couple other strips for apperence and stiffness. They sell .125 inch structural carbon rods, I might cut some grooves in the spruce and epoxy them into the board for springyness and I'm cosidering the possibilitys of crossdrilling the strips of wood (before gluing) so I can coat the carbon rods with epoxy and slide them through the spars during the laminating process, for torsional springyness and split-resistance .though I'm not sure about being able to drill the holes that precisely, I'm not sure if its necessary ,its more expensive, and the s-glass laminates(top and bottom) will probabely do the trick , but it would be so cool.Has anyone heard of aircraft spruce decks?, the wood itself costs over 50 bucks, so its not really a commercially viable building process, but if there are any other high-tech homebuilders I'd like to know what your up to. So far most of the homemade decks sound very low tech, which is cool ,but I try to build stuff that can't be bought not because I can't buy it .There will probabely be a more than a hundred bucks of materials in this board so I'm not doing this to save money. If you want a board with a kicktail a sector9 is probabely your best bet ,they have invested in some pretty cool molds and any wedge add on tail or steam bent homemade board will probabely be inferior to a sector, but if your looking for a real big canyon bombing speed board ,kicktails are not a concern and the number of board builders are fewer,Motherload makes really nice bombers,The aircraft building supplies company that I deal with (Aircraftspruce.com) sells a dense structural foam ,and it was a toss-up between the spruce board and a Turner style long board , I'll probabely do that next. By the way the kevlar edge wrap and the second layer of glass will be vacuum bagged at my friend tim's house ,he's got that set-up.

Wood Bending....
I hear that you soak the wood first, and then use clamps to bend it the way you want. Keep the clamps on overnight or longer. When it dries it is all ready! I have never done this, but my friend have and they say it is "fun and easy"

SNOW BOARD FOR A LONGBOARD. I found out how to make an awsome long board out of a snow board, I did'nt really want the double kick tails so I Picked up a used snow board at Play it again sports For a little over fifty bones and took one of my classic style boards and traced it on to the snow board with a grease pencil, then used a jig saw with a steal cutting fine blade, filed and sanded the edges and now I have a 70 inch board that rides awsome, with good flex ( the length however isn't great for turns) but that the the price you pay w/ all longies. I'll post a pic sooner or latter on the pic papge with the rest of my boards.

Shaping kicktals, if you want to shape kick tails you can do several things that I know of, you can buy premade ones that are usaully made of plastic or such, you can make your own out of wood by cuuting a triangle out and glue it on, elmmer's wood glue works pretty good, or you can bend your board as said in one of the archives by steam, or you can research bending wood. Try looking up wood bending with boats or furniture eames furnture has been been bending wood since WWII. I am interested myself in wood bending as well for the same reasons and for concaving as well. if you find out how before I do please post it for the rest of us. good luck, The Kanoa Kid.

I just saw the new snowboarders mag w/ the top 25 boards for the yr one of them is a woody style board w/
a clear coat resin I was wondering if anyone knew the process of how those boards are put together, I would like to make a longskate board exacly the same way they do yet shape it like a skateboard and keep the wood look! That could be awsome!

My buddy and I found some old wooden water skiis at a garage sale for $10! We slapped some old trucks and wheels on to make our newest creations. Now we have matching waterski longboards. They don't turn very well but it's a fun little ride. They also seem quite stable for downhill bombing but I dunno, they might be too skinny. Guess I'll have to try it and find out!
Happy boarding.

The Stroker project is almost done, i've riden the frame a couple of times already and today the 5ply birch arrived ,I may change the deck, when I make a jig to verticly laminate quarter inch thick strips of wood or maybe a foam/fiberglass deal. The steering is quick but with only the 7075 billet frame to stand on its hard to know how controlable the twitchyness will be. The trucks are tunable anyway changing the spacing on the links(pretty easy) will slow the turning leverage with out tightening the trucks. The bearings on all the pivots and the preloaded springs make for the smoothest hi energy turn I've ever felt, toe in ,toe out adjustments are basic and could have interesting effects on a skateboards highspeed handing, I'll have the board at the A.C tradeshow ,not to sell(way to expensive)just to blow minds.

Snowboards make good longboards. I recomend using an old snowboard. The realy old snowboards were a lot stiffer. My friend made a great longboard out of an old burton 150 elite. Ive seen a snowboard with wheel cutouts and it didn't break. By the way, I've been told that it's easier to slide with a longer board
