I want to be fair and I realized that one of my hints is an error. The oldest skater to compete at anaheim in 1965 will probably not be coming to La Costa.

Good for you. You actually have three correct answers! Skip Frye was 23 years old but he wasn't the oldest competitor.

Glen's Trivia question

Glen,
Yours could be considered a trick question. There was no 1965 worlds. It was called the first International Skateboard Championship.
There were three judges at the table. I only know one of their names and it is Don Thomas from The Quarterly Skateboarder otherwise known as Skateboarder magazine.
There was one female scorekeeper at the table. I don't know her name.
NSC officials that I know were: 1. Douglas A Farley 2. Cal Winfrey
There was one Flagman to start each Giant Slalom racer. His name is: 1. Brian Blades.
I don't know who started the Flatland Slalom or the girl's Figure Eight Slalom.
The contest announcer was: Brennan "Hevs" McClelland.
The ABC Wide World of Sports television commentator was: Bill Fleming.
The Color Commentator from The Quarterly Skateboarder magazine was: Skip Newell.
My friend of thirtyfive years, Jose Lucero filmed the contest and I'm trying to get the footage to view while I visit La Costa for the races. Michael Bream has a projector for both the eight and super eight film.
Thanks for the question Glen.

Jack,
I didn't know that you were on To Tell the Truth. There was also another person who appeared this year. If you were please let me know if it is true? If so I will accept you as a correct answer.
Jack, other than that all of your answers are wrong, sorry.
Arab, your answers are wrong also.
I still don't think anyone will get these and I'll have to have another easier contest later.
Keep trying, Cliff

The shop in the ad was known at the time as Skateboard City, USA (Dogtown's own home of the pros), and the skaters in the ad are: Ross Casillas, Shogo Kubo, Derrick Thisen, Alan Scott, Bob Biniak, Tony Alva, Wentzle Ruml IV, Vince Kline, Jay Adams, Billy Yuron, Chris Owens, Paul Hoffman, Howie Idelson, Bongo, and Paul Constantineau (*whew!*). The address was 11711 Santa Monica Blvd, which was also the address listed for Dogtown Skates in their first ad (the one with just the DT cross graffiti on a brick wall). The shop is still there, but under a different name. It's now Rip City Skates. This is also the shop shown in the first Powell video, which Lance Mountain goes into as a segue into Tony Hawk's part. The shop is now more of a museum, with vintage boards (many of them autographed by their namesake pros) covering the walls and ceiling. If you're ever in the area, it's a must-see...

Here you go Glen,
Extremely difficult, maybe Arab has the answers?
1. What company made the official helmet of the 1st International Skateboard Championships?
2. What was the official sneaker of the 1st International Championships?
3. How much did a 27" Hobie Fiberglass skateboard cost in 1965?
4. How much did the 28" flexible Gordon and Smith skateboard cost in 1965?
5. Who was the oldest competitor at the 1965 1st International Skateboard Championships? How old was he then? By the way, he will be at La Costa.
6. Who was the President of the National Skateboard Championship Association? Super tough!!
7. How much was a charter membership in the National Skateboard Championship Association? This was in 1965.
8. Who was the skater who appeared on To Tell the Truth in 1965 and who was the skater who appeared on the same show in 2001?
9. Who was the manager of the 1975 Maheraja Team?
This is so much fun that if anyone can answer all of these questions correctly they will win a vintage mid 70s Maheraja skateboard deck. 1st to answer correctly wins. Contest ends Sunday 11-18-01. Winner pays for shipping.
There may not be anyone who can answer all of these and if that happens I'll have another contest.

Thanks for posting those pics of the old board. I would have had a hard time describing it to Herbn. Herbn, do you see the similarities between that old deck and the 70s Zepher?

Keep it comming Cliff. Maybe you could enlighten us on some more of the 60's stuff. There is very little of the info floating about. One day I WILL do that History of Skateboarding video, just need the money and time. I do own www.historyofskateboarding.com and need to get it going at least. I did talk to Skip Frye once and he told about playing with flexible board designs in '59, a couple of years before riding for G&S. BTW, I'm cutting together a G&S ad for my "This is not skateboarding" video. Me and Deb have been scanning a bunch of great stuff from the 60's-70's. It will definitly jog loose some of those old memories.

Herbn,
The fibreglass Hobie was 27" in length. It was a spoon shape and for more details ask Jack Smith. He may post a picture for you. He had one but I don't know if he still does. It was the favorite of the riders in 1965.

Wern't hobie fiberglass boards flat "pultruded" glass,i've never seen a hobie with a contoured bottom, railgrabs, wheel wells center rib, thick skid and impact areas in the nose and tail,Torque was a company that did a raised centerbeam early on,Skitch Hitchcocks hobies came out after Zephers,THOSE were tech boards, real foam, rail cloth ,not unidirectional molded or pultruded. They were also so rare and expensive, gee, i wonder what they'd go for on Ebay?

Arab and Glen were correct about Henry starting the vert Hester Series. Glen, I'm not aware of the contest you mentioned in Anaheim. I do see Henry as very influential in both racing and vert riding because of both his racing and promotional talents. Thanks Henry!
Tim Marting of the Alotaflex Team was the first to win back to back vert contests.
Here are the answers to some earlier questions.
The four girls on the Hobie Team were: 1. Wendy Bearer 2. Colleen Boyd 3. Laurie Turner, 1965 girls International Champion 4. Laurie Allen
The captain of the 1965 Northern Hobie Team was Danny Escalante.
Glen was correct that the Makaha Team lost many members to the Hobie Team.
The name of the Northern Hobie Team prior to becoming Hobie was the Topsiders Skateboard Team.
The Southern Hobie Team did the Tony the Tiger Ad.
If you want more trivia, just ask. Maybe this could become a contest in itself? Or a new forum to catalog some of our history.
