Wasn't the actual first vert/pool comp held at Anaheim? I think it was a small contest and I thought Duane won it. The first real vert contest was of course the Hester Series, won by some guy from Upland who no one had heard of, Salba. I was shocked when non of the Dogtown names were in the top 5 of that contest. The Spring Valley contest was the same type of turning point in skateboarding that Del Mar was.

Herbn's right about the Tony the Tiger ad. Stacy must have been about five years old when the ad came out. Most of the great Dogtown skaters were 3 to 5 years old when the sixties skate scene was happening. The Z-Flex skateboard from the middle 70s was a near copy of the original 1965 27" Hobie fiberglass board. The Dogtown guys were at first following the prior skaters from their area, the Hobie Team and a few others from the 60s era.
p.s. The Tony the Tiger ad had a group of skaters in the ad and they only showed them from the waist down so they wouldn't have to pay residuals.

Glen,
I should have guessed that you would be the one to answer my trivia questions. When you get to the point that you can't find some of the answers, let me know and I will fill you in on the correct answers. At this time you are correct regarding #3 and also about Wendy Bearer.

#3 - Makaha - all the guys rode for Larry Stevenson until the Hilton's dad dumped a ton of money into Hobie via his company Vita-Pakt. He thought skateboarding would be a great marketing crossover for orange juice. When Hobie got the big bucks they bought up all the Makaha team guys, and there is hearsay that says they tried to make an exclusive with Chicago to only sell wheels and trucks to them, and not to Makaha.
I'll have to scour the archives for the girls names. 1. Wendy Bearer 2............

The one with the guys outside the boardshop is a now defunct skate and surf shop that was on Pico in Santa Monica, across from the Santa Monica Civic. I don't think they were wearing tux's.

Herbn,
You know your history more than most. Here are a few questions for you.
1. Who were the four girls on the Hobie teams of the sixties?
2. Who was the captain of the 65 Northern Hobie team?
3. What team did many of the Southern Hobie riders skate for before Hobie?
4. What was the name of the team that later became the Northern Hobie team?
5. Who did the Tony the Tiger advertisement in the sixties.
These questions are for your fun and enjoyment Herbn. I still hope to meet you and skate with you one day. Maybe in the future you will come to an event and say hello to all of us?
