Old Semi-sealed

Just thought I would share this. I picked up a old weathered board that had a set of those POS Track Force ACS clone trucks on it.
It also had the bright orange Track Force wheels (they don't ride too bad believe it or not)

Now the cool thing I think the old guys (myself included) will like is the fact that the wheels had a complete matching set of those old semi-sealed bearings in realy good shape.
God, anyone remember those? I have not seen them for years. Kind of like contained loose bearings that press in like the sealed ones.

I soaked them in some trany fluid and blew them out then relubed them and they spin great.

Think I'll keep'em with the wheels....

Spotted this near mint board in a clothing store in Stockholm, Sweden. The woman in the store said she knew nothing about it and the guy who ran the store was out for the week I was there. \It even had a white hockey puc type skid plate with almost no wear. The thing looked almost unused as the kryptos still looked mint and the trucks had no grind marks.

1978 Airflow Wheels and 1976 Belair deck

Looking to sell a mint set of 1978 airflow snapback wheels.
Look to be about 65mmx40mm and 85duro. You remember airflow,
they broke off from Belair board in the late 70s. They were
based out of Crofton MD. We just sold a mint '78 airflow pig
with gullwing pros and wings conical wheels to a local collector.

We also have a fairly mint 1976 Mike Williams belair deck. Let
me know if anyone is interested in either of these products.
My buddy worked at the proshop and these are very nice

I either have or had a set of Hesters. They were at my dad's house last time I remember, but I have looked for them last few times down there and can't find them. I don't remember if I gave them away to some kid before I got back into riding, or if they are squirrled away somewhere.

Gullwing Kingpin breakage

Just a comment on the breakage of Gullwing kingpins. In this case, I'd have to disagree, slightly, with Herbn. In my experience, without the support bracket, a Gullwing kingpin will eventually shear off, even if it never "slams against the hanger,". The fact is, without the support bracket, the Gullwing kingpin is a free-floating metal appendage anchored only, far-out on one end. Further, because of its' angle, relative to the board and riding surface, it bears the rider's weight much less efficiently than the nearly vertical standing, standard truck kingpin. Given all of that, take any free-floating metal appendage, already under a lateral stress condition and wiggle it back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, a couple thousand times, and it's eventually going to snap.

The main reason for the stiffener on a gullwing is to keep the kingpin from breaking,it breaks mostly from being slammed by the hanger,ergo (just wanted to use that word)fundamental design flaw. Loose or tight,i like my trucks as loose as possible and a close tolerance pivot(urithane)lets you run the bushings looser,no shaking coming from the pivot.If you wanted an ajustable geometry ,the part of the base that holds the pivot(huh, beavis a smooth tight pivot,huh,huh) should be hinged on the rest of the base,a tight none-shaking hinge,this would compress the bushings at a slight angle at the extremes of the adjustment range,but that is not a big deal.

Vintage people?

This post doesn't have anything to do with vintage gear but it does to do with vintage people and a vintage spot.
I got to go and video tape at the famous Gonzales pool today.
This pool is a Dogtown historic landmark that has been skated for 25 years.
The session was a private party for a guy named Ozzie.
Salba, Lance Mountain, Andy MacDonald, Ray Flores( still skating pools, well I might add, at age 49 ) Wes Humpston ( not skating but cool to see the guy), and a host of others were on hand. I was there mainly to film Lance, but of course I let the tape run for the full time I was there.
Andy Mac is mainly known for his halfpipe skills, but he was ripping this pool with a ton-o-old school style.
Ray was riding one of his Bulldog design decks, of course, and one other guy was riding one. It was funny to hear the hard wheels that everyone was riding and then see Ray or the other guy take off, with their 70mm soft wheels and not hear them.
I was totally stoked just to be able to be there, much less be able to bring it home on video. I'll pull some video and some stills in next few days and post them somewhere.

Low points: Someone stole my Steve Rocco Freestyle board in 92 after everyone stopped making freestyle decks.
When new school skaters forgot that skateboards were meant to roll

High Point: My first longboard 8 1'2" x 44" Powell Landsurfer with 68 mm 78A Powells (not made anymore) and Indy's. Rode home from West 57th to 5th and 11 th. I realized I found Christ... I mean true love of boarding again.

Golden Years: Now. In a City unindated with short boarders, long and strong commands respect. New Yorkers love the longboarders. And for you single guys on a longboard, fugeddabouttit. Even the cops don't hassle me. Park Slope Brooklyn, soulcarve from 8 th ave down to 4 th ave. Almost a mile of smooth and enough distractions to keep you perky.

I'm happy with my sloppy pivot (as long as I'm the only one using it ;-)...) and apparently, Herbn likes 'em tight. The real proof'll always be on the race course. Right, Herbn? GBJ,I already noticed the huge adjustment potetial built into the grommet/kingpin relationship,but was under the impression that have the axle forward of the pivot point would increase the turn-in quickness.It didn't work that way the first few times out,so I settled back into geometry relationship I could handle,and taking a cue from my R-II's,I set up the wedges so that my Gulls were more Randal-like.It dosen't help that the stiffener bracket gets smack-dab in the way of most wrenches.Today revealed what a little flex from your board can do for the Gulls.Whew!Massive turning power!I went back to an all-flat set-up,and have put the axle(center) just a tiny bit ahead of the pivot,with good results.I'll keep tinkering while the weather allows.A spreadsheet,Huh? Maybe I ought to take notes,too.

The angle of the kingpin is of minor importance (for steering)the pivot angle does much more. A sloppy pivot would allow the angle adjustments you describe but the best steering action will always happen when the angle of the hanger is centered in angle of the pivot cup,the Gullwing design does allow you to maintain this optimum by tightening the truck equally from both sides,the major fallback of the gullwing was a rather limited lein angle,before metal to metal contact,on a short slalom board usually the turning radius is sufficient. I always tried to maintain truck geometry,if more than a few turns are needed ,i switch to tighter bushings, but i used to make bushings out of 65a industrial urithane,make them a hair long so they settle in to the correct geometry.The Gullwing design was good for none hanging up.Has anyone cut a set of Randals right at the edge of the "bushing box" a 128mm randal is totally do-able.
