Hugh,
They may appear to be less responsive at first, but once you've got the board rocking from side to side, it's a great feeling. At that point, I wouldn't say that they turn much slower, just lower. Even though they LOOK different, a dropped board behaves the same as a board that is rockered to the same depth. Rockered and dropped boards remind me of a cradle or hammock where there is a nice swinging sensation from side to side instead of just a tilt. It's like standing up in a canoe versus standing on top of a log in the water. I like it. I don't use pads any higher than 1/4" because it puts the hangers too close to a thick (5/8") deck. If the hanger rubbing the deck were not an issue, I think that "the lower the better" until you reached a critical point where the top of the deck was at the same height as the axles. It has been suggested that the critical point is when the pivot cup is at the same height as the top of the deck. The problem that I have with that theory is that, in the case of Randal trucks, the position of the pivot cup is arbitrary, meaning it doesn't change the way the truck turns. The pivot cup is right on top of the baseplate for the sake of convenience, but it could just as easily be placed up higher and closer to a shorter hanger, or lower and further away from a longer hanger. Most people don't go that low in any event.
It doesn't take a marketing major to figure out that it would a be good idea to get the wheels into the hands of those who will appreciate them, and you and Roger and Hamm are atop the list. Maybe Adam would like some too. Is there any law against hooking up a webmaster? Pardon me, Bill and Hillary.

Dave, Got the pics of the Mallard... nice job on the drop thru and cut outs! Still wish you guys would use some sort of a mounting plate though! (just the mother hen in me coming out) I will try to get those posted up tommorow.
Chris, On the drop through RII's... what perceived differences in carving was there between top of deck mounting and 1/4" above deck mounting. I'm figuring that 1/4" above deck would turn "slower"... is this assumption correct?
Have you tried anything higher than 1/4"?
Also, you better get those 12 set or so of wheels out onto the streets if you want them to be "legal"! Yeah, that's a major hint that I want some! HR

Hugh, Yeah, the little notches on Gary's boards are very well done. He did a real good job with those. On R2s the tab or gusset is much, much bigger, you'd have to cut-out for it. The R2 baseplate is so much thinner it will be much less obtrusive on the top of the board too, and I want to run it without any pad.
Chris, you've dropped R2's? How did it effect the carving properties of the truck.

On a thick board with 1/4" pads and R-II hangers dropped through, I had to cut out a small amount of additional material where the hanger rubbed the deck. I couldn't tell what was happening when turning them by hand, but after riding it as loose as possible, I discovered that it felt hindered when turning. It got better as the hanger made larger and larger indentations in the wood, and I later used the position of those indentations to "dremel" out some clearance.
Since I use the "overbuilt" 35 degree baseplates, cutting the gussets (tabs) off the baseplates seems to be preferable to cutting out receiving slots in the deck. I do however, cut a small slot in the deck when dropping through R-II basepaltes, which aren't as beefy. As Hamm mentioned, with thick pads and the 35 degree baseplates, you don't need to do either.

I didn't fully visuialize the problem, maybe on the next read, but offhand i would think if you assemble the board steer it by hand(not riding) and something rubs you take it apart and remove the offending wood, with a router, beltsander, rasp, chisel:) and try reassembling.sooner or later it should work.

Dave,
On tabs: Remember Gary's TVS drop thru... did you get to look at the pre-mounted version? He drilled 4 holes, part way through the deck to facilitate leaving the tabs intact. They looked a little over 1/4" wide and 1/4" deep. Very cool idea.
On RII's: My concern with the two risers would be with the hanger hanging up on the sides of the cut out. Cause it looks like it will be pretty close.
Looking forward to hearing how it comes out.
Another thing to keep in mind with those RII's... they way they ride seems to get more stable (also less turny) the lower the CG is (which lowers even more with the addition of the pads) So I would suggest that you try it on a scrap deck before risking a quality one like the Mallard or DT.
You may find that there comes a point in the dropping of the trucks where the distance between the base plate and deck is so great that the hangers ability to swing nearly goes away.
I am very interested in hearing your conclusions! Keep us posted... HR

Finally did the drop-thru/low CG thing on my Sean Mallard board. I'm pleased with the way it came out. Can't wait to take it back out it Barrett. The main thing that strikes me is how much easier it going to be to foot-brake.

Cheers, see some of you here

You guys are both very unlucky. Cape Town Is gonna ROCK. I have put a solid three months of training for this comp. Last years DHX I stood on the s-bend and dreamt of what it would be like to be in the competition even better what it would be like to the youngest competitor in the competition. Then I turned my dreams on to winning the comp. Do you have any idea how hard it is to sleep the week before your first comp! I have beaten 99's victor once or twice down the hill. And if I can do it once i'll do it again! So all ye international dudes come over here and try to prove me wrong!! and even if you do prove me wrong(huge chance)I'll be superduper stoked cause I would have skated one of the biggest speedboarding comps in the world and no matter what happens I am gonna have the best time of my life! hey KLUDY, shnitzel and Cliff sorry you guys couldn't make it I looked forwards to meeting you all. But hey there is always next year :-) ps. one week to go(249 hours and 14 minutes to be precise)

I was given an invitation to Cape Town also. Unfortunately the cost of air fare is keeping me from making the trip. Am I dissapointed? You bet! Do I blame anyone or anything? No! What I want to do is wish the best to everyone that is able to make it. Kludy, there are some great riders from Cape Town. I also hope to make it next year.

GBJ,
The pavement on this hill would hurt a goats feet! It is the worst maintained paved road I have ever seen! I don't think it's been repaved, ever, and it must be 100 years old!
Thanks for the very kind words on the pics... my hope is that they'll be helpful to people other than myself.
The guys riding this monster stand up have my utmost respect... I feel bad for their families, but I respect them completely! Kludy is probably the toughest man I have ever met... he likes to fall too... he must. But each time he would get up, smile, and keep on going... ready for another run... amazing. Chris likes to fall too. But not as much as Rick. Hamm, Roger, and Gary don't seem to like to fall at all (wimps)
Now me... I am the king of the wimps... I wouldn't stand up on that hill for nothin! Luge was tough enough for me.
All 5 of those guys are amazing to me. For the first time in person I got to see Gary pitch his board 90 degrees sideways in a 40+ mph slide to a stop. He said my eyes looked like saucers! I bet they did... I couldn't believe what I had just seen... He did it 3 more times... one of the times he added in an additional 180... amazing.
If you ever get out to CA... you've got to see this hill... HR

Hugh, That's the most effective job of conveying a hill, online or elsewhere, that I have ever seen. Great job. The road, however, looks rough as hell. You guys are pushing 50mph on this road?!?! That's pretty extreme. Where I come from we'd call something like that a goat-trail.

Here were the bad boyz of Barrett, clockwise from 12:00, Rick Kludy, Hugh R, Gary Hardwick, Roger J and Hamm with their TVS, Roughcuts and Duck (Mallard) decks.
All of my different sized prototype wheels hauled ass and really stuck the corners (when I thought I'd be sliding out) but that damn Gary was just too slippery.

Saturday was crazy fun. I can't wait to do it again. Everything said about the hill previously on this site is true. The actual asphalt condition. The turns. The ledges & boulders. Its all right there to make or break you. So fun! Now that I know what to expect I will have a different attitude about the top half next time. Many thanks to Kludy & Hardwick for the survival tips and help with lines.

It seems like you guys have gone over to slalom discussions, even on this page, but while you're at it, I'll comment to Hugh r and Herbn, I'm right with you both. Who says it HAS to sell, and I've got no problem with difficult, fast courses, as long as the surface is reasonable. What I have a problem with is dual course wiggling, with a place where they criss-cross in the middle, "so there's a chance people will run into each other"-type ideas, conceived because "that'll sell!"...
