Bearing Review
Rebuilding BonesReds / shield-retainer integration
On 1/24/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Hey, yeah! I kept all the parts but at the time this happened I thought it would be pretty hard to put it all back together (solution was, borrow a spare bearing) but just now I tried it and it went together easily!

One thing about fixing Bones Reds rather than finding something better - since the shield pops back on easily, won't it just come off again during the next major sideways load I put on it? Perhaps it won’t because of the way the balls fit in the rings?

In the past, I've always used NMB or GMN non-servicable bearings and would just retire it if one of the shields separated. That sucked, but the bearings could be purchased individually for $1 each then so it wasn’t as big a deal to buy extras to have on hand for a quick replacement.

My idea for a better bearing was not to have the retainer (on Bones Reds, it’s the part made of plastic) integrated with the shield (that would make it impossible to clean if junk got in like what happened to mine recently) but to have the shield integrated with the outer ring. On Bones Reds, the shield spins with the outer ring. The shield is made out of thin aluminum that “fits” into the steel outer ring. There is enough space there for thin lubes to leak out and the shield is liable to come off, getting damaged if the rider doesn’t notice it. I can’t see any reason why the shield and outer ring can’t be made as one piece of steel. I think it would make the Bones Reds close to perfect (much better at least).

Sheild/retainer
On 1/24/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

I don't think the retainer and the sheild can be integrated, the inner race doesn't spin and i think the retainer and the outer race spin at different speeds, because of the difference in the diameter of the balls and the races.Huh?,,,,,,,,,,,,he said balls,,,,, huhhh, huhh,he,he.

Broken Bones. Looking for an alternative.
On 1/23/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

I blew a bearing from my first set of Bones Reds today. It was about 8 months old and I had just cleaned it for the first time (paint thinner was used). I lubed them with 1-2 drops of Tri-Flow each. The red, non-removable shield came off while I put it in the wheel with my GrindKing tool (designed to push on both the inner and outer ring of the bearing) which immediately caused the bearing to fall completely apart, balls, rings, shield and crown all over the place. Actually, it might've happened when I was snapping the crown in, I don't remember exactly.

Now that I know how easily this can happen, I'm looking for a bearing with a shield that is more integral with the outer ring. I'd also like to keep the design of the Bones Reds bearing (shield on one side, open on the other, with plastic crown that keeps all the balls separate).

Does anybody have any suggestions? Will Swiss Bones fill the bill, or will the shield pop off those too?

Hey Joe
On 1/23/2001 kaylee wrote in from (209.43.nnn.nnn)

Joe,
I can understand your enthusiasm, but we would all appreciate it if you either checked the archives/search page before posting and also only post the same question once. If you don't get a response, it usually means your question was ill posed. To answer you, all those bearings you mentioned are pretty much the same as far as skating applications go, because they are all made in the same factory in China. The factory stamps out different shields with "Brand Names" on them as a marketing ploy. While it is true that some brands of bearings may be "faster" than others, it is common to see two sets of the same brand perform differently due to variances. Often, some of the bearings in one set roll nicely, while the others in the SAME set crap out quickly. Unless you are trying to win downhill races, any respected bearing will serve your purposes. If you're looking for the "best" bearing, Bones and FKD have good reputations of being smooth, quick, and long lasting. But wheels, road conditions, and riding style all play more of a role in your rolling resistance than your bearings do. I would suggest getting the bearings that appeal to you the most, for whatever reason, give them a chance to break in, evaluate their performance, and then post your conclusions here. That way we'll know how that bearing is. Most of us haven't ridden ALL of the bearings you've mentioned and hence cannot compare those particular brands. Even if you stick to a well trusted brand like Bones, you can luck out and get a swift set that last years, or get pure crap. Just go with your gut feeling and let us know what you find out. Think of it as an experiment. Have fun!

Lucky Black Beauties ABEC 5
On 1/22/2001 SimFucious wrote in from (63.210.nnn.nnn)

These bearings, in my opinion, are a pair of phat bearings. Yes the crowns are delrin instead of plastic. The only downside about these bearings is that they are LOADED with grease when first purchased. You can either a)Ride for 4 hours on some intense hills, or you could use some Gumout(carburator cleaner) Anyway, these bearings are top notch

ABEC ?
On 1/22/2001 Sharkisland wrote in from (206.210.nnn.nnn)

Sorry for the ignorance, but can somebody clear-up some confusion for me. I though Abec bearings were a particular brand, but it seems that they are actually a rating??? Do all manufacturers use this rating, because I have not seen too many other bearings on the different on-line sites described with relative abec ratings.

Thanks.

Bearing Crowns
On 1/21/2001 Bobo The Clown wrote in from (129.116.nnn.nnn)

I just discovered that I have one set of bearings that have metal crowns. They are abec-5 rated.
Anyway, does anybody know if nylon/delrin crowns are any better for any particular reason, or if metal crowns are bad? Or do the crowns really make any difference at all? Thanks.

bsb swiss bearings abec 7's
On 1/20/2001 st blais wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

After skating with two separate sets of bsb abec 7's I am extremely disappointed. They were pathetically slow; even after allowing for break in. My stock abec 3's (forget manufacturer) are a hundred times faster....

Please feel free to email me with comments or reasons why such a high grade bearing would be so bad..

Thanks

Re: Bearings
On 1/18/2001 fishroller wrote in from (209.53.nnn.nnn)

tommy, the best way to take bearings out is with a bearing tool, but you don't really need one. the next best, and most common way, is to use your truck axle to pry them out. just put the wheel patially on to your axle (about half way), and pry the bearing out, repeat as necessary. most important is when you pet your new bearings in. put a speed washer on your axle DON'T FORGET THE SPEEDWASHER OR YOU'LL DAMAGE YOUR BEARING SHIELD, place a bearing over the speed washer, and push your wheel onto the bearing. i usually start with the front bearing, take off the wheel, put on the back bearing and spacer, and push the wheel on again until the bearing is seated. then put another speed washer on and tighten your locknut until it stops. remember, always use bearing spacers. check the links section for 'about bearing spacers.' bob does a good job of explaining their importance. also, i think it shows pictures of the procedure i just explained to you.

as for what bearings to buy? it's purely preference. don't fall in to the ABEC trap, unless you plan on going 300mph for 6 month durations. if you have the money to spend, buy bones swiss (i just bought some and they rule! smooth, fast, and durable), if you're on a budget, bones china reds are good too (although they are not as durable, they are nearly as fast) for about half the price. Hope this helps. Peace
