Ti bearings

Doesn't have the strength? I'd think it would be stronger than any kind of steel.

Bearing Press?
On 1/31/2001 Mickey D wrote in from (128.54.nnn.nnn)

Just a quick question, as my bearings are getting kinda sh*tty and need to be cleaned . . . do I HAVE to have a bearing press to seat them back in correctly, or is it possible to do it without one? What are the drawbacks to not having one? Any advice would be appreciated. I know the presses aren't that much, but I'm nothing but a poor college student, so I'd like to avoid it if possible; however, if I really need one, then that's that.

Ti bearings?
On 1/31/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

I don't think so! ti doesn't have the surface hardness or strength, period. Ti nitrite coating, like cutting tools, yes thats possible, not to sure about ultimate speed but it would keep oxidation/rust away.

BSB titanium
On 1/31/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Titanium bearings sound awesome!
I looked them up with a search engine and found that they come in 2 varieties, titanium races with steel BBs (greater availability) and titanium races with titanium BBs (not so available). I was able to find the first version available in 8-packs and singles but the all-titanium ones were only available in a 16 pack (bummer).

bsb's
On 1/30/2001 lugedemon3 wrote in from (166.94.nnn.nnn)

st. blais, bsb's are not bad bearings. In the first place, nobody should be able to tell the difference in speed between ABEC 1's and Ceramix, the human body is not efficiant enough, only a timer can determine. I have bsb Titaniums, they are pretty good. I have many bearings, abec1 no-names, to Ninja 7's. In fact, the fastest i have ever been on my luge, was on ABEC 1's believe it or not. How good a bearing is is mostly judged by its durability.

After skating on two seperate pairs of bsb abec 7s, greased and broken in, im shocked at how slow they were. My stock abec 3s were faster...

Bollocks Ball Bearings
On 1/29/2001 Kaylee wrote in from (209.43.nnn.nnn)

I got a set of 10 of these, ABEC 5, from that migrationboard guy. They started sounding crunchy faster than any other bearing I've ever ridden. I still have one (out of 10) that rolls worth a damn. I just might have gotten a bad batch though.

Re: NMBs
On 1/28/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Phil,
I've never cleaned NMBs before but if I were to do so, I'd relube them with something thin, like Tri-flow. Put 1 to 2 drops of that in each bearing and ride.

NMB's
On 1/28/2001 Phil wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Hey all, i found a pair of rollerblades with all NMB bearings in them. I took them out and cleaned out all the grease with gun scrubber. Are these bearings worth using or are they for the trash. Thanks.

Phil

Re: Red China Bones
On 1/26/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Pat,
As I said a few posts down, I have some that I've used for about 8 months. In the same post, you'll see that one of them came comepletely apart. This happened when I was puting the plastic retainer (a piece that fits inside and keeps the BBs uniformly spaced inside the bearing) back in after I cleaned it. I think that it came apart because I was not careful when replacing the retainer. Once I got it all back together again, I carefully snapped the retainer back in and now it seems as good as ever (solid and fast). I'll find out tomorrow if the shield stays on. Even if they don't last much longer, they've been worth the $16 that I paid for them. If it weren't for the acrylic paint that I painted my wheelwells with, my wheel wouldn't have gotten dried paint gunk in the bearing, I wouldn't have had to do the cleaning. Don't paint your board's wheelwells or ride your board near sand. Use routine judgement in where you ride and the Bones Reds should be impressive.

Lucky 7s
On 1/26/2001 Mike wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Buying abec 7's retarded? Get urself a set of these with some nice wheels and u'll know what shredding is. To me, crazy wild speed is fun, and the extra ten or fifteen dollars is worth it. Plus Lucky bearings seems to last a looong time. You guys should seriously try these out.

KMart bearing

Soaking the bearing in paint thinner would probably clear out the grease.

How would you be able to "soak" the grease off of bearings with all of that grease in them?

Oil
On 1/25/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

It could be argued, and it may be a fact, that if you took "k mart" abec1 bearings, soaked the grease out of them and put quality oil in there, they would work fine. But it's easier to buy skate co bearings(speedemons,or china bones)and just ride. They come with cool stickers:)

Abec Ratings
On 1/25/2001 Bob The Dog wrote in from (216.34.nnn.nnn)

In PCB's last post, you see that he mentions a comparison to K-Mart Equipment. If you try to spin the wheels on a K-Mart skateboard, you will notice that they *dont* spin. Probably, the bearings on this junk is of lower tolerances than abec 1's. As I doubt anybody here is riding k-mart completes, Any bearings you buy should work pretty much the same. I have ridden 1's-7's. I would not advise buying Abec1 rated bearings, as they seemed quite a bit slower. Buying up to Abec7 or 9 rated bearings is retarded. Unless you just have a lot of money to blow on nothing. 3's or 5's work just as well, and for considerably less $. Dont be a retard.

abec 3s 5s 7s

I can't tell the difference aned I have all 3 types. I'd stick with 3s or max out at 5s at most. 7s are a waste of $$.

ABEC rating.
On 1/25/2001 PCB wrote in from (207.172.nnn.nnn)

Before 1994, bearings were a simple choice for me. NMBs, GMNs and Powell Swiss. Skateboard shops didn't offer much else (at least all the ones I'd been to). I always bought the cheapest (NMBs) and was never dissatisfied. I'd never heard of the ABEC rating until I was at a general sports retailer that sold rollerblades. Some salesman there was trying to assure me that the $90 abec 7s were faster than the abec 1s, 3s etc. stating that 1s were equal to the low quality that came on KMart equpment. This sounded really lame to me and for awhile I was confused on what would be the best bearings for the money they cost.

Those were some dark days for me and skateboarding. I'm glad Powell marketed a cheap alternative to Swiss (even if I did just write a complaint about them below). Opinions from actual skaters are much more reliable than any sales pitch. Because of this, I can't suggest any ABECs for you, sorry.

Wadey, you are starting to catch on, paying for abec ratings is a waste of money. Type of lube has far greater effect.

ABEC5/7/???
On 1/24/2001 Wadey wrote in from (137.157.nnn.nnn)

In response to "Bill Clinton's" info link about ABEC ratings:

The page you had linked suggested that anything over ABEC3 or even over ABEC1 was not going to make any difference to skating. I have ABEC5's and have been thinking about getting ABEC7's... am I wasting my time and money?! Can someone who's got ABEC7's or at least knows about the differences give me a brief testimony?

Wadey
