bearings
On 2/10/2002 longboardbuddha wrote in from (213.48.nnn.nnn)

herbn, calm down, its true we are often reticent about materials and other things and maybe a bit vague. goldlines for the record are bearings found in the space shuttle engines, nascar engines and formula 1 engines. they are precision bearings, ie knock them about with a micrometer and you would be hard pressed to find a glitch. put them on a lathe and give them some high speed grief and you can put your finger on the cage (its a stupid thing to try dont do it!!)and there is no vibration or heat they are that smooth. As for skate wheels and fitting, the truck axle haD to be removed and replaced with a thicker (by 1.71mm) axle,or by putting in a machined phosphur bronze bushing. the wheel has to be machined to accept the cage QED. Anyways i do it for the love (and because people say it can't be done) and because i'm idle. I like to push off at point A and not put my foot down again till point B. folk with little or no cash have to make do with what materials they can get their hands on and use their skills to make things better at low cost to ourselves. goldline have a website somewhere with full specs about their bearings.

See ,they did it again, Web Weasels, E weasels, E-asels ;these boards are better, these bearings are faster, but no whys, no reason,i've tried the rest these are better, they just are......Tell me materials, specifications, manufacturing systems, something. You can usually do so without comprimising "secrets". If you don't have a reason,i'm gonna figure that you just bought a new box/container and sourced bearings with your "special cool name" on the sheild, lets put them in dime bags,we can have panama reds, accopulco golds, hawaian whatever, "oh yippy i'm in the skateboard business" quit the day job and order be a Bently, get Soust.com vanity plates.

Hey Herb, I know from trying the lot. I agree with what u said that most bearings can be summed up as very simular performance. I would not make such a claim if I indeed did not try many of the products out there. I am just trying to give everyone a hot tip to further their progression.

Bearing efficiency
On 2/8/2002 Herbn wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

How close do you think swiss or ninja's or blackpanthers are to 100% efficiency? i don't think there's been any significantly faster smoother bearing since swiss, but similar quality(speed) has come down in price. There seem to greater variety of fast bearings at cheaper prices these days.nine ball, eight ball, six ball,a lot of talk about one being better, stronger, faster no one has numbers,no scary advances in speed, ceramic swiss seem slightly better in turns and a half to one mph (maybe) faster in the straights than a set of 16 dollar gold speedemons,if you got money riding on a race, a win is a win.But to come out and say you got way better bearings is almost assuredly hype.Bearings are quite possibly as fast as they're ever gonna be.

Molyslip
On 2/7/2002 Longboardbuddha wrote in from (62.31.nnn.nnn)

Hey dont put wd40 in bearings as it also makes microscopic surface cracks in the bearing, it will also put a thin layer of solvent on the bearing making it hard to wash crud off. I soak my bearings in molyslip (an engine oil additive) it works on the same principle as wd40 but is essentially a mineral based lubricant. Soak em for a few days, towel them off and put in back in the wheel, they stay cleaner, roll faster, and live longer.

And as an extra feature, when you take the screens off to clean the bearings (which you will need to do, on average, twice daily) you can use them in your Bones Pipe Tool ™.

ADVICE AND SWEET BEARINGS
On 1/29/2002 Jon wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Hary ball bearings come in abec 5 and 3 as far as i caan tell, and they have 8 BALLS MOST HAVE 7 BUT HARY HAS MORE BALLS!!! U can get them at www.Flexdex.com i have 3 longboards 1 with the abec 3's and they accelerate faster with a lubricant, use greese and i have 2 with abec 5's they are very very slightly slower but role much longer, use oil lubricant with them and they need a little more maintenance than 3's, generaly 3 and under use greese and 5 and higher need oil and take more maintenance. Also abec is just a system of rating and they generaly don't effect speed that much, speed is mostly dependant on the lubricant, # or balls and smotness of the bearing. A higher end bearing 3,5,7,9 will bo faster and role longer as u increase due to they're quality that they are made at. The bearings at flexdex.com are very well priced serious!!! and they are muchmuch better than any others. If you are looking for a site with abec 7,9 ore ceramix ore ANY!!!!!!!! type of bearings got to http://www.swatskates.com/bearings.htm#608 it has every type you could possibly imagin and they work very well for skateboards!!! CHECK THEM OUT. If you are have the extreme need for speed and i mean like almost profesinal type speed get ceramix, they are sooooooo fast be careful and they literaly don't stop rolling. Well good luck on picking the right size bearings, and generaly the best size for skateboards are 608's or the new SiNsystem's i don't know much about them though

WD40
On 1/29/2002 Dave T wrote in from (212.2.nnn.nnn)

SSofS WD40 was originally developed as a water disperser, but it can be used as a lubricant (according to their info) but there is much better out there, as Adam said do a search. I have found petrol to be good or acetone (nail varnish remover) then use a light oil, specific skate ones, sewing machine oil etc...

WD-40
On 1/29/2002 Adam wrote in from (64.164.nnn.nnn)

WD-40 is not a lube. Use the Search function to get the low down on "WD40" (and also "WD-40"). I may work as a cleaner, but I'm betting you can find better solvents.

As for lubes, there are several good skate bearing lubes on the market.. the trick seems to be to use only 2-3 drops of the stuff, not gobs. I prefer the liquid lubes as opposed to the slower (but longer lasting) grease-based formulas.

SSofS,
My main problem with wd40 is that it seems to attract/collect more grit than other types of lube. I like synthetic gun oils and sewing machine oils for my lube... HR

Bones Swiss in WD 40

Prepare for howls of outrage and derision from bearings fetishists all over the globe...
I clean my Bones Swiss in WD40. Well, it works for me..!
Anyone got a problem with that, and if so, can you point me in the right (or a better) direction?
Thanks

Black panthers
On 1/28/2002 Herbn wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

They used to seem pretty sluggish, but recent sets(all black) have seemed pretty smooth and fast.I know people don't beleive in it but; i can tell how good a bearing is by spinning it in my fingers, and how the wheel spins. Variables do exist ,heavy oils and grease can trick you,but a very basic feel of the bearing smoothness still comes through, the question is will the bearings be clean long enough to reach their potential for speed.I believe in "instantaneous gratification" fast from the moment you put them in.

PT's
On 1/19/2002 hugh r wrote in from (205.216.nnn.nnn)

I am real! I am a person!

Actually the two sets of PT's are holding up just fine that I am running. One set on my kids speed board (but he only weighs a buck ten, so nothing seems too fast) and the other set on a slalom deck.

So far so good... smooth, accelerate well, holding up just fine.

I'll see what I can do about getting an extra set for you to run through the paces.

I certainly agree that most everything in the bearing world is PR hype... part of the game! But the PT's are priced well and holding up very well too... HR

Herbn, I agree with your statements about the PT hype.
Cheap - yes
Great service - yes
Bearings - I would take a pair of China Reds first. They really are just average. All the 'they are really fast' is just hype.

unrated, not industrial bearings, though the old ones (7 ball) are generally considered to be around abec 7 a fast 7 there are some sevens floating around that are kind of sluggish they might not be fraudulently rated, just greased 7's or thick oil,so they're not fast when new and generally get dirty and gritty before they're broken in.

I know it doesn't really matter a lot of times but I was wondering what the rating was on these. for the price they must be at least 5.
