WHAT?!?! Where did you hear that?? I skated w/Polar Bear at Marina back in 80 and 81 and he Ripped it up!! He always went big, and rode the biggest terrain like the Whale Bowl. I once saw him doing multiple loops in the Turning Point ramp, (3 ribs out) and he fell at the bottom, sending his board rocketing around a full loop to nail him in the head, cracking his Fly Away helmet and knocking him out clean. He was one Bad Ass skater and punker, we will all miss him.

April 9th, I head out for a week on the Cape. That park is gonna be packed on opening day! Have they set pricing yet? I heard it was looking to be pretty high. Would be a shame if the kids couldn't or wouldn't afford that cool park.

Hamm, I've jotted your phone# down -- won't be taking a PC on this trip (too much hassle at the airports, etc.).

Coronado would be nice (again). WWSP would be too, but I figure it is probably pretty crowded now that its "officially" open. No?

Encinitas! I'll have to make sure it is still in my mapbook/list! I didn't skate it last time due to travel time, but *did* skate it a few years back when I was first starting (first time I ever went down a roll-in IIRC). From what I've heard -- with the addition of some crete -- it has gotten much better. Thanks for the tip!

Any other parks with lights down south (e.g., Coranado)? We have light until about 7:15 PM here (we aren't on DST, though)

BBB and CT parks

YES, that Wethersfield park would be fantastic and close to home. I got to sneak and ride the Milford park last November and more of similar would be perfect. Thanks BBB for taking such an interest in CT skating! I'm 41 and crappy but with concrete like this I will continue to improve. Rode Arlington, VA on a business trip a couple weeks back - love that flowing concrete. Would really like watching the banked slalom comp to see how it's done.

Bloomington IN to San Diego CA

TomM, It'd be cool to sk8 with you again. I work early AM until 3:30 to 4pm weekedays. Probably not up to driving North in San Diego traffic after work, but if your in actual urban San Diego late one afternoon and wanna sk8 OB, Wash St, Coronado or something, let me know. Shoot me a e-mail or call @ 619-723-7606. Chula Vista is not real close to Oceanside, but has lights and a 6to9pm session.

For your own good, check out the Encinitas YMCA. It's the best park in SoCal, home to a lot of Pro's. They are all cool and will cheer you on though, it's not intimidating at all.

In case we don't hook, have a great trip!!!!

Danny Joe Brown
On 3/16/2005 knucklehead wrote in from United States  (162.83.nnn.nnn)

I was mixing a band that opened up for Molly Hatchet back in 1992 or 93. We were playing a club in Charlottesville, VA. While MH was onstage a few of us were standing up next to the stage catching a buzz. I saw something fly from the audience and smash into the cymbals. MH promptly left the stage. In my stoned state I wondered why they were finished so soon. I didn't realize that someone tossed a beer bottle at Danny Joe and it hit the cymbals and broke.

Danny Joe came back on the stage and said that the band will not come back until the person who threw the bottle would step forward. Of course no one did, so he wanted the person to meet him outside the club after the show to settle the score. Finally some drunk guy stumbled on the stage and said, "I'm sorry, I threw the bottle".
Danny asked him again, "boy, did you throw that bottle?". The drunk replied, "yes sir I did".

One punch, Danny clocked that idiot and dropped him like a bad habit. He said, "get that s#@! off my stage... let's rock and roll!"

After the show Danny was felt bad about punching the guy because he hurt his hand doing so.

RIP Danny Joe Brown.

JD,

I grew up in Jax (skated KONA the day before it opened) and went to several bars that MH played at before they cut their first album. Danny Joe was the show, is what we used to say. BTW, that whistle you hear DJ do in the studio recording of Flirting With Disaster where DJ calls in the second lead guitar, guess who took that (as a tribute) and still uses it to this day?: LS, yessuh!

I hope Neil Young will remember....

Death of lead singer of Molly Hatchet

This may be old news for some of you but I just read about this in today's Washington Times newspaper: Danny Joe Brown, lead singer for Molly Hatchet from '75-early 80s, who was a Jacksonville, Fla, native, passed away last thursday from complications w/diabetes. Many times I heard his music blaring from a boombox while skating Crofton Skate Park or the Ocean Bowl. He was only 53....R.I.P.

Saturday March 26 Old School Skate sessions!

Saturday March 26 Old School Skate sessions in Northern Cal!

Martinez skatepark from 10am 'til noon...

(ignore that site's info. on local skateshops - they both moved)

...then lunch somewhere in Martinez...

...followed by a visit to the Moraga skatepark from 1:30 to 3pm...

(the bowl at Moraga is about 5 or 5-1/2 feet deep and has a roll-in, so it's great to try stuff without falling far if you bail)

There is a thread on this session on the Bulldog Skates Message Board under the "Sessions" Forum.

New parks in the SD area?
On 3/13/2005 Tom M. wrote in from United States  (12.210.nnn.nnn)

I'm heading out to the SD area (probably Oceanside) on 03/19 for a weeklong family vacation.

Was there on an extended business trip last September, and got to hook up with Hamm, Lynn, PapaSD, and some other locals. Skated Coranado, WSP, Poway, Memorial, El Cahon, and briefly at Robbs and the Clairemont Y.

Most of my "free" (i.e., skate) time will probably be on weekday mornings before the wife and son become "active", so I'm looking for parks that are open early.

So far, these are the possibilities I'm aware of:
Poway (which I really liked last September)
Carlsbad (skated it a few years ago when I was just starting -- seemed pretty rough IIRC, but it will be close by)
Vista (saw it a few years ago, can't remember if I skated it or not -- again, it will be close)
WSP (it was awesome & unfinished in September, not sure what its "hours" are now -- a bit of a drive but worth it if it is open and free of gangsta's <g>)
Memorial (my last info said it opened at 10AM -- a bit of travel time, but still a possibility)

I'm planning on bringing my longboard to pacify my evening urges. Never had a chance to longboard near the ocean: Should be fun!

Any other parks open early?
Any NEW parks I should check out (regardless of hours)?
Anyone in the area free on weekday mornings that want to skate a park?
Same goes for evening longboarding?

I'd like to hit Coranado again. I'm still scheming on a plan, though...

Milford Banked Slalom
On 3/10/2005 BillyBonebrake wrote in from United States  (24.45.nnn.nnn)

I'm meeting with the YMCA on Wednesday to discuss this event. I think it will happen and if I need to get Joe in to see these people I will. But I may need his and John Dillon and anyone's else's help with this later.

Now here's the other part of this: Wethersfield is close to building a similar but larger park with a late summer ETA. Sloppy Sam is doing the design (and hopefully the work). You can see the proposed layouts here:

http://wethersfield.net/html/gov/tow/parks/mill/skpk/05/skpk-05303-63-sch1-900x600-75.jpg

Can you say Connecticut Banked Slalom Series? Groton already fits the bill so there you have 3 parks in the 3 corners of the state.
