would anybody suggest skating pools and bowls as a form of practice for surf techniques? or are the two disciplines completely unrelated in terms of technique?

Jonathan,
Check out this link for the Tempe, Arizona skatepark done by SDG. Maybe it will give you some place to start the design/discussions.

Buddy, Still, Crash and Toby, thanks for the input. I'm hoping that it helps. I've skated a Site Design park in Springfield, IL that has VERY nice concrete work and a decent flow-bowl design, so I'm hoping this YMCA park will be at least that good.
As I said, most of the skaters who attended or participated have said they want a "skatepark" pool rather than a backyard pool. There's plenty of tighter transition stuff around the area, but nothing wider open. And at the several concrete parks in the area there's plenty of so-called "flow" areas with little or no flow, due to poor design (weird things like drop-down sections, spines or "fun boxes" in the wrong places, too-quick transitions, and so on). That's why I'd like this to really be good.
Our starting point is a peanut or skull bowl, about 7' shallow and 10' deep, with pool coping (I hope). One question I haven't had a good answer to yet: Why such small transitions (8 foot, for example) in a "big" pool? On a vert ramp, an 8' transition is *tiny*, and frankly a pain in the ass to even ride--when you bail, you're right out to flat bottom. Is there something different about a pool that makes an 8' tranny OK?
At this point I'd personally rather see a wide-open bowl with no "weird" stuff--no tombstones, escalators, set-back sections--just a basic bowl that you can haul ass in, carve, grind, AND do airs out of, without having to have the reflexes of a chipmunk to keep from bottoming out on the flat. Some people might call THAT a cookie-cutter design, but if all you had to skate was the whacked-out, messed-up stuff that passes for skateparks in this area, you might not think that's such a bad idea. Besides, cookies are tasty, man! Mmmmmm, cookies...
I still welcome any and all input, via e-mail or this forum. Thanks.

to Jonathan Harms:
Can't help you with the design side of things, but I can say that these guys do good work. Here in the metro Phoenix area they have done several good parks, including the Tempe park which I hit three+ times a week. Whatever they do for you, you should be happy.
For any Arizona park skaters, I'm looking to hook up with guys to hit all the parks here in the Phoenix area. Sort of a bowl tour. Drop me a email if you're interested. For more info, check out my post in the "events" topic. (anyone can reply, if you're passing through the Phoenix area and want to find the parks, give me a holler)

"For a forgiving fun design you need lots good and constant curvature. whether it is kidney, amoeba, or whatever. gentle curves, built wide and open"
Actually some of the best pools I ever rode were Square Pools, I think there is to much emphasis on this whole round wall/constant curvature thing. I think a simple bowl like a semi square capsule would be killer, a round deep end with carvable shallow corners 9ft deep with a 7ft shallow and no waterfall, just a gradual slope from shallow to deep 7ft trannies all around with a 22ft round deep, that makes for 8 ft of flat, more then a backyarder, but less then the cookie cutter wide open crude that keeps getting built.
and of course, real coping.

you have to decide if you want burly backyard style rider or a forgiving fun design.
For a forgiving fun design you need lots good and constant curvature. whether it is kidney, amoeba, or whatever. gentle curves, built wide and open, 6' shallow on a 8' tranny, 8' deep on the same 8' tranny (just to vert). let some nice pool coping add the burlyness to it. gentle slope to deep end. this design aspects keep it fun for many different levels of skaters.
For the burlier backyard style (yet park-friendly), you still need constant curvature, but throw in some funkiness and it needs to be fairly cramped confines, 4' shallow on a 4' tranny (right to vert), 9' deep end on a 7.5 tranny (1.5 ft vert). slope to the deep end (no waterfall). the sarasota FL park pool is very cool design to look over.
Whatever you want. ITs an open canvas. I recommend not going too burly. it really drops the skateability except for the really tight tranny skaters. You have to make it ride right, and has to have the good feel. Dont do any of that flat wall with rounded corners and waterfall BS

One of the St. Louis YMCAs has hired Site Design to build a concrete addition to their existing prefab/slab skatepark. A small group of skaters, myself included, met with Brad from Site Design last Wednesday to get some ideas going. They've only got 10,000 square feet to work with, so he's suggesting one separate pool/bowl (which I like) and the rest street (which I can take or leave, and for which other people have better ideas and more expertise). I just want a good "skatepark" pool (as opposed to a backyard pool) similar to the kind I saw in Skateboarder mag in the late '70s and early '80s--Cherry Hill, Apple, Colton, Marina del Rey, Lakewood, Del Mar, or something like those. Never actually skated any of those, but that's the type of thing I'm talking about.
Brad showed us photos of the Magdalena Ecke YMCA combi and Etnies skull bowl, among others. Though different, those two look really cool, and I was wondering if anyone can offer some opinions on them. How are the transitions, waterfalls, surfaces, tile, coping, etc.? Any particular likes or dislikes? Feel free to share whatever details you can, either on this forum or by e-mail. Thanks.

'crete in Miami??

I'm moving to Miami next month. I've searched for skateparks in the Miami area with real bowls (preferably concrete), but was amazed to find nada. I searched on all the usual skatepark sites (Concrete Disciples, sk8parklist.com, skatespots.com, skateboardparks.com), and was shocked to find ZERO.
Lots of killer parks up near Orlanda & Tampa (4+ hours from Miami), but in Miami itself: nuthin'.
I simply can't believe this is true. Any Miami or Southern Florida skaters out there who can tell me otherwise? Is Olliewood basically the *only* spot in the entire Miami region with a bowl!??
How can it be that every little village in California and the Pacific Northwest is building a skatepark with real tranny on a monthly basis, but a city of 2.5 million people in sunny FL doesn't have a single park with concrete bowls??
PLEASE tell me this is wrong and all the skatepark sites are just omitting some killer (or at least *decent*) park in Miami...
Thanks, Lansing
