ditch contest
On 6/15/2005 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

My advice on the ditch contest is to go ahead and throw a contest there. Invite only people you think can keep a mellow scene and not attract trouble. And if you get busted, act surprised and know that it wasn't meant to be. That's the way it works here in Albuquerque. The first Indian School race went off without a hitch. We got kicked out the second time. Luckily we live in God's Land of Ditches so we had a backup course. We have tons of backup courses here. If it's your only good ditch, be careful about getting it shut down for good. But the only way you'll know for sure is to try it and see....

Uh... 2 and a half paces at the smallest. I dunno... 5 or 6 feet. It get's tight for me with a tail wind, but I think a real slalom skater would breeze it.

Rio Rancho Slalom
On 6/14/2005 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

Hey Mark, how tight are those cones at their tightest? The reason that I ask is that my slalom rig is "in the shop" right now and the only board that I have that might work is a DITCH board (keepin' it on topic) with a 21" wheelbase. 6' centers, more or less? TS? GS?

Has anyone scouted the landscaping job out at Rio Bravo ditch lately?

Rio Rancho race on Sat
On 6/14/2005 Mark Jeangerard wrote in from United States  (64.42.nnn.nnn)

Sorry about jumping forums here, but the ABQ locals seem to hang out here more.

On Topic: Have you cats seen that ditch half way up Rockaway? We could skate it after the slalom on Saturday....

Let's change the meet time to 11:00am. I was trying to avoid the heat, but more people is more fun. Weather's been nice anyway.

Take hwy. 528 to High Resort. There are a Dion's and a Presbyterian hostpital on either side of the corner. Turn west, go down the hill. There will be parking lots on the right. Might be better to park there than on the course. (Bust factor. You know?.) To your left you will see the new road with a couple unfinished houses and a bunch of leveled dirt lots. You can enter top or bottom on foot.

OK... Palmer can come, but he's the only one required to wear a helmet... and it has to be really, really dopey.

...and Cody is allowed only if he's tanked into oblivion...

MJ

(Just kidding about entrants, of course all are welcome. Who am I to say otherwise. It's skateboarding for cryin' out loud.)

As far as I am concerned, if you are not there when I win, it won't be as fun.

So talk about ditches! Don't know if I can't make it that early on Sat, kids have a swim meet till 11 or 12, maybe it's at that pool by the park you're talking about, pretty low probability. Is that Paradise Hills?

Slalom this weekend
On 6/14/2005 Chris wrote in from United States  (216.243.nnn.nnn)

Paul,

Here is the deal. Mark set a 67 cone tight(ish) slalom course on a closed road with a nice little park on the side and outhouses around. It's a nice place to spend the afternoon whether riding or just hanging out. This is a road where they are building homes, but the 1st one is not done yet, so there is no traffic at all.

The hill is directly across the street from the sports complex (you know, where the so-called skatepark is) and can be easily seen while driving up high Resort Blvd. It is gated at both ends, but the top gate is open all day.

Mark has planned this get-together for 9:00 AM Saturday. The course should be set up not too long after that. Come on out and lets slalom. $5.00 entry and after we are all invited to Mark's house for a BBQ. Somewhere in the slalom forum there is a picture and more details (posted a few days ago), or you can call Mark @ 891-2542

On 6/10/2005 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

Curtis,
The ditches are really easy to find. Do you have any particular ditches in mind? Indian School is the usual destination. For that one, just take I-40 to Tramway, north on Tramway (the mountains will be to the EAST). While on Tramway, you will drive over several ditches. This is the best part of town for ditches, as they come out of the foothills and run to the river, so they're all on a downhill slope and stay clean and dry for the most part. For Indian School ditch, hang a right (east) on Indian School road and then take a left (north) on Monte Largo. Drive until you drive over a ditch, park, and skate.

There's all kinds of hills here too. Long ones, short ones, mellow ones, steep ones. The best ones are in the foothills, near all the good ditches. It's not too hard to find them, just drive up into the mountains and look for killer neighborhoods. I could show you some.

If you get lost, here's a map that lists all the streets and ditches:

http://www.amafca.org/images/maint.jpg

Too bad it's too big and detailed to print out. Anyone have a big map-sized printer?

Anyway, if you want to hook up, send me an e-mail or give me a call 247-2346.
