Um, my mistake, the cool video is at www.stik.com. No "c". It shows some great coleman slides and shows the standing slides also. Check out brad's technique! He is definately surfing on pavement. He credits his board, but this style can be done on other equipment as well. I guess it just helps to be a real surfer. Your wakeboarding experience should serve you very well. I would like to see some new videos of you doing your berts and such. You may want to get some sliding gloves, www.bozi.com has great ones. I don't think Tony Alva ever used them, but I sure do. Bozi has some great boards, also.

Angi - I knew you would get your husband hooked! Once you start longboarding it's hard to go back. If you get another board you guys can skate together, that would be great.
I would definately recommend the Original Freestyle 43. I have this board and it is amazing! Check out my review of it on the completes forum. There is also a banner ad for Original there. If you click on it, it will take you to Original's website. Check it out. You will also find many other suggestions and recommendations on that forum.
Your S9 Cosmic Rider 2 is a great board. Not sure about the destructo trucks, never used them. I dont actually think that they are a longboard truck, though. Have you tried adjusting them? If you have loosend them, and they still feel too tight they might not be a good truck for you. The general consensus on this forum is that Randal R2 trucks are the best for longboarding.
I've never used them, but if you do a search on the truck review forum you should find a bunch of info. I use Original Supercarve trucks. They are spring loaded and turn even tighter than the randals. They have a great surfy feel and you can turn 6 foot circles with them (on a 43" board!)
As for wheels, the Abec 11 flashbacks that were recomended below are great for carving and general skating. They have a great ride and really grip, look for something around 75a. These would not be the best for sliding, however. For sliding check out Gravity Super g's (or street g's) in 90a.
As for bearings, there has been a great discussion of this over in the bearing forum over the last two weeks. You should check it out. You will need to scroll down several pages.

my husband has been 'borrowing' my longboard to run to the bank machine and general errands in our n'hood. now he wants one!! so everyone please post what you think the best set up is for cruising the hood and carving around..
deck/trucks/bearings and wheels..I want new wheels too, i have the sector nine with the destructo trucks..

I wondered cuz one board shop said they didnt have longboard trucks... but Hefty sells longboards there..anyway, let me know...they are just still soooo tight! i hate it, cuz the originals were perfectly loose! so easy. :(

Hey Angi- i could be wrong but i think your skateshop hooked you up with some freestyle kickflipper trucks! You should get some Randal 2's, I think you'd be way happier with them, very good trucks- can go from very tight to very loose. Ride on!

I am gonna check those wheels out..now I have a question, are my sector nine wheels gonna be too 'grippy' to try to do the bert slides?? remember I am totally new to this, so I have ZERO knowledge about it..luckily a client of mine called today and is coming in next week for his haircut and he does competitive skimboarding and him and his g/f surf. I told him I got a longboard and he said he and his G/F both have longboards..so I may have found 1 or 2 people to go with and teach me some basics! very kool.

Oh no, I hope I did not come off like I was trying to just promote my website, in fact, I want more people to check out my husbands website the 420Empire one, cuz I just love to share the videos that he and I make of all the board sports we do!! I have enough hair clients! shoot, I have been doing hair for 11 years...I stay completely booked! but its my 'art' so I do like to hear feedback! (of course!) ;)
once I get these trucks all worked in (had a little incident 3 days after I got my board, it flew into traffic and got smashed by a mini van and 3 cars..only the back trucks and bearings of the back wheel was affected) so i was carving it up pretty good cuz i spent a whole day on the streets and then at 8:30 that nite, BAM slid out, board into street...SMASH. anyway, took it to nearest board shop the next day (Disorder skate shop) in St. Pete *Great guys* Hefty hooked me up with some new destructo trucks..but they are still a little tighter than the originals but man, those trucks were so loose! and PERFECT. guess it just takes time huh? anyway, I will try that carving like you said and keep u posted, hopefullY i will have new skate video so you guys can check that out

hey Angi nice to have you here, you revitalized this half dead forum!
here's my tips: to improve your carving skills (almost) overnight go to a park that has a big bowl or pool where you can ride your cosmic (great sidewalk surfing board by the way) and carve it without kick turning like you would do in a half pipe. like someone else that's carving to the 3rd dimension and it will teach you to use more your legs/upper body to turn instead of just your feet like on the flats.
for street cruising get some nicewheels like the abec11 flashbacks in a softish duro, if you ride on the s9 wheels you will definetly experience a huge improvement.
get some classic skate movies, downhill motion is a great one.
www.surfmotion.com is an awesome web site with a ton of info and tutorials on surf style longoard skating.

Checked out your site when your message went up last week. Was reluctant to respond cause it seemed more like an ad. Still wound up perusing the coiffures. After checking out the thread I'd have to say that I'm glad that I was way off base.
Just wanted to say that there's something about the way most ladies flow on the boards that gives riding that graceful approach. Easy going not always amped out on overdrive. Always nice to watch and be around.
I've got a sister in NM and an old skate partner in Canada who are dearly missed. They both ride with that curvalishious intention putting the "surf" in sidewalk surfin'. Can't help but put guys in the passenger seat some times.

yes, my board is the cosmic..I love it, but then again, I know nothing else. it may be a peice of crap, i went into this totally blind and relied on the guys at the surf shop to help me. did they do good? i used to skate vert when I was younger, but not (I am 32) I don't wanna risk breaking something dropping into a 6 foot half pipe, but I didnt want to give up skating either, hence the longboard..
oh yeah, I checked out the vids. thanks so much!! I wanted to SEE the slides, I figured it was like the 'berts' they talked about in DTandZB's. but I was not for sure. yeah, link me up with more.. I am like a sponge wanting to soak things up!!
I have quite a large male clientele. I have men that book every 3-4 weeks with me to get hair cuts and some even get color! The men love to get pampered too! come on in! where are you located? for some reason I thought you were in Cali...?? well, I only have 6 months experience wakeboarding! only like a week experience longboarding!! so i am sure you are better! yeah, if its raining..hop on that balance board..phone call..hop on..commercial..hop on! try the 180's..they are fun! I did a 180 on my skateboard the other day, (whole body, ended up goofy footed) kinda sloppy, but I wanted to try it. sometimes I feel like I am 12 years old! :) my neighbors prolly think I'm nutz!

really?? A full length movie?? that rocks! I would def go see it, I too hope that it is good...I love documetary type movies. Wonderland was good ifyou have not seen that one...and Boogie Nights. I love 70's kinda stuff! *born in 72...guess its showin'!*

Did you get a chance to check out the sliding videos I recommended? If you like those I have found a bunch of other cool skate videos on the net that I can point out to you.
You are right on target about core training. I use a medicine ball and one of those wierd swiss balls. You can lie on the swiss ball and do weight training exercises like bench press, ect. I bet you have a great core. I am going to start using my balance board daily like you do, or at least when it's raining and I can't skate.
I didn't see any men's haircuts on your site, would you cut mine anyway? We could skate afterwards. It would be fun, but I hope you're not better than me with your six months experience. I've been skating on and off (mostly off) for almost 30 years, still not that good though. I'm working on it. The Dogtown movie did inspire me. Did you know that they are working on a hollywood version of it with actors and such. I hope it's good, can't wait to find out.

well, I just jumped on the balance board one day at my local board shop and I was hooked. My husband brought it home about a month later as a surprise gift!
whenever I was on the phone with friends or watching t.v. I jumped on it..there is another video on www.420EMPIRE.com where I do a 180.. its called Jedi Angi ..it has much more pivit action. I guess the only advice I really have is put alot of time into practicing it. I try to spend at least 15 minutes every day doing my balance board and at least 30 minutes on the longboard. I also do triceps and biceps with weight on the pivit board since doing any kind of weight training where you have to use your 'core' 'abs' to keep you balanced helps to kill two birds with one stone and it keeps my abs/arms strong for wakeboarding!
Yes, I caught Dogtown one day on Fuel then the next time I saw it was gonna be on, I tevo'd it..I just watched it last week! I love it!! so much style. IMO skateboarding does not get the respect it deserves its alot harder than it looks. I found this out when a friend of mine came over and tried to just STAND on my longboard...she went 'boom boom'. ooops.
anyway, thanks for watching and for the compliments. I wish I could find some people who longboard in my area, so I have someone to go with sometimes!!
girls just don't seem to be as 'into' board sports..at least, I don't run into too many..bummer.

I'm working on learning the sliding also. Have you seen the "Dogtown and Z Boys" documentary? They show the Bertleman turn, which is cool. The movie can be rented at blockbuster or most video rental places. I bought my copy at Suncoast video in the mall.

There is a section there that lists sliding videos that can be found on the net. There is a ton of other information, also.
Also, check out gravityboard.com - go to team and look for cliff coleman.
Gravity also has some dvd's that have been recommended to me, but I have not seen them yet (will be purchasing them soon): Gravity Flow dvd or vhs, Gravity Slides.
And, of course, their is a great sliding forum right here on NCDSA.

Roboto, I just got some destructo trucks put on...it had pivits (came with them) figure I will keep those on till I really start to progress. Hopefully it will be like my wakeboarding, I have only been boarding for 6 months and can do air 1 wake 180's and w2w's , surface/butter slides, surf the wake and carve pretty nice and ride switch. (not too bad for a girl) ;)
I wish someone had a video they could send me of the sliding...anyone??? I just took up longboarding on my own and I know NO one who does it to show me the ropes!! :( if anyone has any video I would greatly appreciate it! also Roboto, I ALWAYS wear my helmet wakeboarding and when going out for the whole day of longboarding, I strap it on then too! anyway, I just got done with my latest video of myself doing some pivit board action, some longboarding (not much since I just started) and of me wakeboarding..check it out let me know whatcha think, see anything I can/should improve on or do different, feedback welcome! go to www.420EMPIRE.com and my newest video is called "Easy Ridin'"

Angi. As a Skater, Surfer, Wakeboard/wakeskater, snowboarder, I can tell you that you will find that all of these sports complement eachother. My surfing skills went way up when I started longboarding every day. The some things that I would suggest are.. 1. Get good wheels and trucks. (RII 180's and Flywheels) 2. Learn how to slide. (you can learn at low speed) 3. Wear A helmet. (sure it looks dumb but it sucks to not ride for 2 months or more) 4. Keep trying new board sports. (Surfing will change your life.)

angie- learn to slide. a manuver used to stop, and it is great fun too. bassicaly you lean hard in drop knee position (with or withuot your hand on the rail) and turn intill you slide. turn sharp too. lean back alot too , because to force will throw of otherwise. put your hand on the ground to lean hard and low. get either plastic wrist guards or sliding gloves.

hey guys! i just got myself a longboard and I am hooked! I am a wakeboarder, so i wanted something to do when not behind the boat. I am HOOKED BIG TIME!

LBK- Ya riding the wrong way is a bit crazy. I find myself going the wrong way on one way streets once in a while and what I notice is that drivers NEVER look both ways when turning onto a one way.

One Sat. morning about 6:30 am, I decided to skate down to an all day Surfrider meeting in Washington DC. The trip was almost all downhill for a couple of miles so I thought it would be safer to take the split in the road going the wrong direction so I could keep an eye on any possible drivers heading my way. What a mistake that was. I ended up having to luck through many traffic lights from the wrong side and had no idea if they were red or green. Scared the crap out of me entering intersections full speed while blind to the traffic lights. Luckily it was too early in the morning for any vehicles on the road.

Yo, I live in sunny england and the biggest killer by far is driveways, privatly owned death traps, owners fly outta them and well, so far its been a lottery whether I stop or not. Where road intersections are concerned I just act like a bike. If ya commin up to a inter fast I just chip onto the road(after lookin of course) and subjegate the potential car of death to my right of way.
Ive had a few board under car issues in the past tho, my moment of glory was commin down a earlham rd in Norwich England, on the pavement on the left hand side. Theres a pretty good run leading to that point so if you got the space you can get the speed. Goin faster than I can run in a speed tuck I was about to flash past a blind pub entrance when a car pulled out, subconcious decided that it would be best to avoid it and my legs responded swerving so hard I slid past the cars bumper so fast the car didnt have time to get me. Soon after my brain caught up and had to jump off skiddin to a stop to think about what just happened//

Uh, rolling onto the hood has worked for me...This only happened once, there's a little alley that opens on to the sidewalk near my house. I used to kind of ignore it, but one day a car pulled out too quickly to footbrake. I couldn't really blame the driver- it's a tricky place to pull out of, but you should have seen the look on his passenger's face. Now I take a big wide turn around that one.
