vaitus - I know about Brad Gerlach. I don't expect to be able to skate like he does in that cool banked skate park. I would be great if I could though. That is really surf skating.
What I am talking about is near the begining of the video. A dad and some kids start pumping down the flat and then they start grabing a rail and pulling cool slides and such. If I could just emulate that one scene (to start with) it would be great.
What equipment (other that the surf stik) would be good for this?

vaitus - the Stik did'nt look slow in the video, but I'll take your word for it. It's $215 not $250. I don't like that you cant put standard skateboard wheels and bearings on it.
What specific set up (exact deck, trucks, wheels, bearings) would you put together that would work as well or better? I want to be able to skate like they showed in the stik video. I know that the right equipment by it self wont make that happen. Any other suggestions for learning surf style?
What do you ride now?
Anyone else have any ideas?

Hey everyone, thank you for your thoughts on land surfing.
What kind of equipment are you currently using for this stye of skateboarding?
How do you like it and would you recommend your current ride?
What kind of equipment is on your current wish list, what would you get if money was no object (other than a new Ferrari, I mean)?
I'd also like to hear more about what surf style skating means to you;
where do you do it, what kind of stances, moves do you have?
There are a million instructional videos for kickfliping/street style,
I would really like to see one on surf style skateboarding.
I've heard that those eXkate trucks are pretty cool. I am currently using the Original SuperCarve trucks and they are similar. They use a single spring instead of a bushing (or instead of two springs like the Surf Stik or Seismics). Their great! I can turn super tight circles, U turns on sidewalks, ect. You have to have the right deck with them, though or you will get wheelbite. My deck is the Original Freestyle 43, it has a beutiful snowboard shape to it. It also has holes in it right where the wheels would touch. I get zero wheel bite, and I can really lean into turns (sort of like that surf stik). I really like it.
But, I am also searching for another (ultimate) set up for surf style.
What do you guys (and gals) think?

I'd through in the exkate torsion trucks for surfy carving in a flowing park. Our park in Columbia is not great, but it is a concrete park with some variety and flow. the bushings don't compress, they twist, and I've heard some complain the return to center but they really turn hard, allow you to though your weight in a turn on a bank and really unload pumping out of the bowl. I agree with getting your money in wheels and trucks, building your own carving machine for a better price with better a better ride. But, s#@!, you gotta ride it to know. I'd like to hear more from others that have ridden one. I really liked the video. those where beautiful long flowing lines. I liked hearing his thoughts on the board at the end. I don't discount that as just a sales pitch, but I[m from Missouri, you gotta show me. and all that.

It's a great movie, has a lot of z boys in it and other great skaters, la costa footage and the signal hill race, the final sequence of G.Weaver is unbeliavable.
Bertelmann was a great surfer, he had veteran Hawaiian shaper Ben Aipa design him a surfboard (the Stinger) that he could replicate his skate moves on....he was known to sand the fin box bigger so that the fin would play and he could pull tail slides easily. Another great surfer skater was/is Hawaiian Buttons K., I believe they were on the same team back then and while bert is now retired Buttons still shreds both on land and on water, he's sponsored by Gravity and appears in their videos.
da shtik, one day I actually happened to ride one of those (briefly). My impression are as follows: the carvability is definetly there but I don't know if I would pay $250 for it. The wheels have a cone shape and are slow, the bearings were really bad, even on the brand new boards I saw at the surf shop.
The trucks are basically seismics clone with the only difference that you don't have the option of having different springs or baseplates. For that kind of money you could get a landyacthz board of similar shape, trued axles seismics with the right springs for your weight, your choice of expensive ceramic bearings, gumball or avila wheels and still end end up with a faster setup and some spare change...anyways don't take my word for it, you know how the saying goes: what works for me etc...

although the truck design is very interesting, i bet you could get the same sensation of deep carving with a dropped deck like a landy UA and some loose randals. At least it seems to be a little unstable... also i would miss a kicktail on that board. but, silversurfer, if you get your hands on one of that stik thingys, i would love to hear some recommendations!

A good double bill with downhill motion is The Devil' Toy. It's from 1966- so while there's nothing extreme in it, it's a nice look at a "sufier" time. I saw this movie way, way back in the early 70's before I ever saw a skateboard. I remember being confused, as a small child, because I'd always been told the police were my friends, but here was this movie about something that looked like an awful lot of fun, but, for some reason, the police didn't seem to like it much.

A wildass friend of mine, (who drug me done to the Virgin Islands, interupting my college education for 5 years!), became prosocuing attorney in Iron County, home of the Johnson Shut-ins and several other similar but lesser known spots. Crazy daze... Glad to hear you wear there on the Board. How funny.
On another note, I took the whole family (kids 2, 5, and 9) to a little indy theater last summer and watched Step Into Liquid. I felt like we were one of those families in Whitchata KAnsas in the '60's, watching Endless Summer and starting the dream. They'd already seen lots of pics from my Caribbean adventures (including clean 20 foot faces from Gilbert, with me ripping on a bodyboard) and lots of Surfers Journals and TSJ video, but the "little" big screen Step Into Liquid experience kept 'em talking for days. I had to go back the next night and see it again! I loved the Texas tanker surfers.
There are some boards available now that are made just for surfing boat wakes. A young kid that lives at the Lake of the Ozarks, and wakeboards every chance he gets, said they overload a decent size boat with a crew all on one rail and cruise along at about 5 to 7 mph while someone surfs the wake. So yes, someone is surfing MO. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as he told me numerous funny stories about their "surf trips" at the lake.

Hey angi, for an all around board for the hubby, take a look at the Landyachtz Chief, Aluminum Seismic 180 trucks , ABEC 11 78a Flashback Wheels, Pleasure Tools Bearings-- I know nobody will object to that being a killer all around board... And get some longboard trucks!

If anyone knows of other surf skate videos that can be seen on the internet please, let me know.
I am also interested in DVD's/VHS tapes with great surf style skating. I am going to check out the ones that were already recommened below.
Let's get skating back to it's sidewalk surfing genesis. If this type of skating got more exposure maybe the street/new school/kickflipping style would not be so popular.

Way back when I once took my 6'6" Mike Tabling (mid 70's East Coast single fin squash tail) surfboard board down to the Johnson Shut-Ins while others would float innertubes and air matresses around me. Thinking back now I realized then how some of those curls seemed last forever but admittedly spent most of the afternoon floating in the eddies sippin some of that local fare. Those who've never been to this natural waterslide which was cut out of a single bouler by the force of water alone... just won't understand.
Now that's something you could never forget.

Was Larry Bertleman a skateboarder? I know that he was a surfer and was featured in the film "super session". He had that low pivotal style that influenced the Z boys. He was always crouching down and touching the water with his hand, while doing cut backs, ect. The Z boys saw this and adapted it to skateboarding, eventually developing the Bertleman turn or "bert". It was kind of like an early coleman slide. Those guys had such an awesome surf-skate style, this of course was all before they discovered pools and accidently invented the modern extreme style. Of course, if you saw the movie you know all that.
But was Larry Bertleman a skateboarder as well as a surfer? I did not know that. I would love to see the video footage. Is there anywhere on the internet where I can find video of Bertleman skateboarding?

sometimes I'll read a little surfers journal, then get all jonesed and go for a skate. it is the cure. but forget surfing. I really like to bodysurf from inside the wave, popping out onto the face as it peaks, and for that I've found no substitue.

If you carve hard and stay relaxed you're gonna find that you'll end up hitting the classic surf posses. last night was the first barefoot session of the season for me, I was thinking surf as I got low for a backside turn and reached down the hill with my lead arm and up the hill with the trailer, then swung the lead arm back up as I dug in front side... rode the gutter a bit and ducked under the overhanging bushes for some REAL green room time, then soul arch for the rollout. bring on the summer pavement.

also check the movie go for it by hal jepsen for some killer Larry "Bert" Bertlemann (sp?) footage, the quintessiantial surfer skater from the 70's. More Larry B. can be watched in the video rollin' by sector 9 as well as some 60's footage of the hobie skate team, originally from the movie surfin' shorts by Bruce Brown. lastly I would suggest the gravity 3 in 1 dvd and the Wingnut's art of longboarding video, it's a surfing video with a brief skate session done by surfers.

I am intriqued about the idea of surf style longboarding. I currently have a Powell Surf One board and I also have a couple of slalom boards and a Landyachtz Drop Carve. Naturally each board rides different from the others but I so love each and every one of the boards in my little quiver.
Now I was wondering just what the definition of surf style riding really is. I think I can imagine it is probably the difference between the flowing wide carves of my Powell as compared to the deep and snappy carves of the Drop Carve. Am I on the right track?
If you could tell me more about what surf style is I'd really like it. What does it mean to you and how does it differ from other styles of longboarding (for example, is it really close to 'soul carving')?
