Did you get a chance to check out the video at www.stik.com?

I want to be able to skate just like they show in the video.

This is as close to surfing on land that I have seen. They make it look easy.

What do you think of their Surf Stik board? I am thinking of buying one.
Is it good, or would you recommend a different set up for sidewalk surfing? Am I just being swayed by a very slick video?

Does anyone else have an opinion on this video, and/or board?

Eagerly waiting for responce - Eric

Did anyone check out the video on this site? I don't work for them or anything, I just think that the video is a nice example of surf style skating.
If you did, what do you think? And what about that surf stik board. Do you like it?

If anyone knows of other surf skate videos that can be seen on the internet please, let me know.

I am also interested in DVD's/VHS tapes with great surf style skating. I am going to check out the ones that were already recommened below.

Let's get skating back to it's sidewalk surfing genesis. If this type of skating got more exposure maybe the street/new school/kickflipping style would not be so popular.

Way back when I once took my 6'6" Mike Tabling (mid 70's East Coast single fin squash tail) surfboard board down to the Johnson Shut-Ins while others would float innertubes and air matresses around me. Thinking back now I realized then how some of those curls seemed last forever but admittedly spent most of the afternoon floating in the eddies sippin some of that local fare. Those who've never been to this natural waterslide which was cut out of a single bouler by the force of water alone... just won't understand.

Now that's something you could never forget.

You mentioned "Downhill Motion". I've been trying to buy this video but have not been able to find. Longskate.com has it listed, but it is apparently out of stock. Do you know where I can buy it? Have you seen it? Could you review it for us. That would be great!

Larry Bertleman
On 4/22/2004 silversurfer wrote in from (24.62.nnn.nnn)

Was Larry Bertleman a skateboarder? I know that he was a surfer and was featured in the film "super session". He had that low pivotal style that influenced the Z boys. He was always crouching down and touching the water with his hand, while doing cut backs, ect. The Z boys saw this and adapted it to skateboarding, eventually developing the Bertleman turn or "bert". It was kind of like an early coleman slide. Those guys had such an awesome surf-skate style, this of course was all before they discovered pools and accidently invented the modern extreme style. Of course, if you saw the movie you know all that.

But was Larry Bertleman a skateboarder as well as a surfer? I did not know that. I would love to see the video footage. Is there anywhere on the internet where I can find video of Bertleman skateboarding?

Peace -- Eric

sometimes I'll read a little surfers journal, then get all jonesed and go for a skate. it is the cure. but forget surfing. I really like to bodysurf from inside the wave, popping out onto the face as it peaks, and for that I've found no substitue.

If you carve hard and stay relaxed you're gonna find that you'll end up hitting the classic surf posses. last night was the first barefoot session of the season for me, I was thinking surf as I got low for a backside turn and reached down the hill with my lead arm and up the hill with the trailer, then swung the lead arm back up as I dug in front side... rode the gutter a bit and ducked under the overhanging bushes for some REAL green room time, then soul arch for the rollout. bring on the summer pavement.

Surf style
On 4/22/2004 vaitus wrote in from (24.199.nnn.nnn)

check surfacemotion.com, it's the surf style skating encyclopedia!

also check the movie go for it by hal jepsen for some killer Larry "Bert" Bertlemann (sp?) footage, the quintessiantial surfer skater from the 70's. More Larry B. can be watched in the video rollin' by sector 9 as well as some 60's footage of the hobie skate team, originally from the movie surfin' shorts by Bruce Brown. lastly I would suggest the gravity 3 in 1 dvd and the Wingnut's art of longboarding video, it's a surfing video with a brief skate session done by surfers.

Surf style?
On 4/22/2004 Airin wrote in from (207.6.nnn.nnn)

I am intriqued about the idea of surf style longboarding. I currently have a Powell Surf One board and I also have a couple of slalom boards and a Landyachtz Drop Carve. Naturally each board rides different from the others but I so love each and every one of the boards in my little quiver.
Now I was wondering just what the definition of surf style riding really is. I think I can imagine it is probably the difference between the flowing wide carves of my Powell as compared to the deep and snappy carves of the Drop Carve. Am I on the right track?
If you could tell me more about what surf style is I'd really like it. What does it mean to you and how does it differ from other styles of longboarding (for example, is it really close to 'soul carving')?
thanks loads!

The Barfoot site seems to be down but their boards can be seen on other links. These should do the trick for RTR's (ready to roll) or boards which are already assembled.

Um, my mistake, the cool video is at www.stik.com. No "c". It shows some great coleman slides and shows the standing slides also. Check out brad's technique! He is definately surfing on pavement. He credits his board, but this style can be done on other equipment as well. I guess it just helps to be a real surfer. Your wakeboarding experience should serve you very well. I would like to see some new videos of you doing your berts and such. You may want to get some sliding gloves, www.bozi.com has great ones. I don't think Tony Alva ever used them, but I sure do. Bozi has some great boards, also.

Can't wait to see YOUR new videos - Eric.

Another Longboard!
On 4/22/2004 silversurfer wrote in from (24.62.nnn.nnn)

Angi - I knew you would get your husband hooked! Once you start longboarding it's hard to go back. If you get another board you guys can skate together, that would be great.

I would definately recommend the Original Freestyle 43. I have this board and it is amazing! Check out my review of it on the completes forum. There is also a banner ad for Original there. If you click on it, it will take you to Original's website. Check it out. You will also find many other suggestions and recommendations on that forum.

Your S9 Cosmic Rider 2 is a great board. Not sure about the destructo trucks, never used them. I dont actually think that they are a longboard truck, though. Have you tried adjusting them? If you have loosend them, and they still feel too tight they might not be a good truck for you. The general consensus on this forum is that Randal R2 trucks are the best for longboarding.
I've never used them, but if you do a search on the truck review forum you should find a bunch of info. I use Original Supercarve trucks. They are spring loaded and turn even tighter than the randals. They have a great surfy feel and you can turn 6 foot circles with them (on a 43" board!)

As for wheels, the Abec 11 flashbacks that were recomended below are great for carving and general skating. They have a great ride and really grip, look for something around 75a. These would not be the best for sliding, however. For sliding check out Gravity Super g's (or street g's) in 90a.

As for bearings, there has been a great discussion of this over in the bearing forum over the last two weeks. You should check it out. You will need to scroll down several pages.

Also, check out the cool video at WWW.stick.com

Peace -- Eric

Hey Angi- i could be wrong but i think your skateshop hooked you up with some freestyle kickflipper trucks! You should get some Randal 2's, I think you'd be way happier with them, very good trucks- can go from very tight to very loose. Ride on!

thanks guys!
On 4/20/2004 angi wrote in from (67.8.nnn.nnn)

hey thanks guys for all your input! I am gonna check those wheels out..now I have a question, are my sector nine wheels gonna be too 'grippy' to try to do the bert slides?? remember I am totally new to this, so I have ZERO knowledge about it..luckily a client of mine called today and is coming in next week for his haircut and he does competitive skimboarding and him and his g/f surf. I told him I got a longboard and he said he and his G/F both have longboards..so I may have found 1 or 2 people to go with and teach me some basics! very kool.
and company is always nice too!

Oh no, I hope I did not come off like I was trying to just promote my website, in fact, I want more people to check out my husbands website the 420Empire one, cuz I just love to share the videos that he and I make of all the board sports we do!! I have enough hair clients! shoot, I have been doing hair for 11 years...I stay completely booked! but its my 'art' so I do like to hear feedback! (of course!) ;)

once I get these trucks all worked in (had a little incident 3 days after I got my board, it flew into traffic and got smashed by a mini van and 3 cars..only the back trucks and bearings of the back wheel was affected) so i was carving it up pretty good cuz i spent a whole day on the streets and then at 8:30 that nite, BAM slid out, board into street...SMASH. anyway, took it to nearest board shop the next day (Disorder skate shop) in St. Pete *Great guys* Hefty hooked me up with some new destructo trucks..but they are still a little tighter than the originals but man, those trucks were so loose! and PERFECT. guess it just takes time huh? anyway, I will try that carving like you said and keep u posted, hopefullY i will have new skate video so you guys can check that out

there is a great video of a street/vert skate contest put on by 'Gravel Gear'
on www.420EMPIRE.com click the GRAVEL link to see it. kool stuff.
www.420PRODUCTION.com has some kool skate vids too.. not long boards, but boards none the less!!

oh yeah, i am now going to be the judge in an indo board comp at Wakefest coming in May! I am so excited, I am entering the 'endurance indo contest' I'll let ya know how I'll do!!

skate on skaters!

to everyone thanks for being so helpful to a 'newbie' !!!

to rolling on that concrete wave
On 4/20/2004 vaitus wrote in from (24.199.nnn.nnn)

hey Angi nice to have you here, you revitalized this half dead forum!

here's my tips: to improve your carving skills (almost) overnight go to a park that has a big bowl or pool where you can ride your cosmic (great sidewalk surfing board by the way) and carve it without kick turning like you would do in a half pipe. like someone else that's carving to the 3rd dimension and it will teach you to use more your legs/upper body to turn instead of just your feet like on the flats.

for street cruising get some nicewheels like the abec11 flashbacks in a softish duro, if you ride on the s9 wheels you will definetly experience a huge improvement.

get some classic skate movies, downhill motion is a great one.

www.surfmotion.com is an awesome web site with a ton of info and tutorials on surf style longoard skating.

have fun!

Checked out your site when your message went up last week. Was reluctant to respond cause it seemed more like an ad. Still wound up perusing the coiffures. After checking out the thread I'd have to say that I'm glad that I was way off base.

Just wanted to say that there's something about the way most ladies flow on the boards that gives riding that graceful approach. Easy going not always amped out on overdrive. Always nice to watch and be around.

I've got a sister in NM and an old skate partner in Canada who are dearly missed. They both ride with that curvalishious intention putting the "surf" in sidewalk surfin'. Can't help but put guys in the passenger seat some times.

See ya Swerve...

hey silver-- yeah, my husband skates, but mainly vert and street, ya know ollie's and kickflips and such on a 'short board' he went with me last week just to cruise, but my board is such a 'caddy' on the street, he was busted by the time we got home,,his boards are def not a smooth ride like mine!

yes, my board is the cosmic..I love it, but then again, I know nothing else. it may be a peice of crap, i went into this totally blind and relied on the guys at the surf shop to help me. did they do good? i used to skate vert when I was younger, but not (I am 32) I don't wanna risk breaking something dropping into a 6 foot half pipe, but I didnt want to give up skating either, hence the longboard..

oh yeah, I checked out the vids. thanks so much!! I wanted to SEE the slides, I figured it was like the 'berts' they talked about in DTandZB's. but I was not for sure. yeah, link me up with more.. I am like a sponge wanting to soak things up!!

I have quite a large male clientele. I have men that book every 3-4 weeks with me to get hair cuts and some even get color! The men love to get pampered too! come on in! where are you located? for some reason I thought you were in Cali...?? well, I only have 6 months experience wakeboarding! only like a week experience longboarding!! so i am sure you are better! yeah, if its raining..hop on that balance board..phone call..hop on..commercial..hop on! try the 180's..they are fun! I did a 180 on my skateboard the other day, (whole body, ended up goofy footed) kinda sloppy, but I wanted to try it. sometimes I feel like I am 12 years old! :) my neighbors prolly think I'm nutz!
oh well, who cares!?

really?? A full length movie?? that rocks! I would def go see it, I too hope that it is good...I love documetary type movies. Wonderland was good ifyou have not seen that one...and Boogie Nights. I love 70's kinda stuff! *born in 72...guess its showin'!*
