hey julius - would love to post a pic but my computer and camera don't seem to be on speaking terms at the moment. i will get one up as soon as i can figure out a remedy. can you post pics on these boards? finishing a board this week too so i will put them all up. thanks for the interest - i can get a trace of your board at the next race if you are there. fyi raising 10 to a power indicates an exponent not multiplication , however, given your unique IQ, you achieve the same result either way. ;) sirie

Sirie, can you post a picture of Mikes board for all to see the quality of your work. Very nice work indeed! Thanks for all your help at the local events. Lets see, my IQ ( 1 ) x $10.00hr still = $10.00 ! What a deal! Hope to see you @ the next Midtown Race. Cheers, Julio.

thanks for the interest mike has been passing on to me about the griptape jobs i have done for his boards. i am happy to do boards for all! the price he quoted earlier was actually what i had given in response to an inquiry about a large quatity of work - hence the by the hour rate. for individual boards i can do it anywhere from 50 to 100 bucks a board, depending on size, intricacy of design etc. except for you gary - thanks for the PR dollface - your board is on the house. feel free to email me at the above email or just talk to mah man. grip with style makes you fly! ;)
happy skating...

Hey Julius- Sorry to hear you have to pay for women, but I only do griptape - not kooks. However, I will more than happy to make you and extra special offer JUST FOR YOU: take the quote Mike gave you and raise it to the power of your I.Q. and you will have my rate per picosecond to do some tape for you. Given the demonstration of your intellect thus far it's probably a pretty killer deal.

As stated earlier I'm looking into getting into slalom. I see two sizes of boards. 30-32 inch boards and 36 inch boards. I'd guess that the shorter boards are for tight slalom and the longer for giant slalom? Is that right? I'm looking to start with TS as soon as I decide on a board.

Tight/Hybrid slalom session this morning with Ravitch, Gary, and Julius. Ravitch and Holl fast as usual. Julius making clean run after clean run on a fairly technical course. Upcoming spoiler in the tight slalom if it gets really tight in Morro Bay.
Had fun... Will scope out potential spots for other Midtown events with Gary and Julius.

GH, I'll tell her. That was just a number she threw out at me the other day......I think they're worth more than $10/hr, of course. She'll have to negotiate each board individually...I'm just the business manager!
Yeah, the board PD made is pretty damn nice. It's something like 31" long with 21" inner hole to inner hole measurement. I rode it at WLAC a couple weeks ago and took a 3rd on it behind Chicken and Richy in the TS/Hybrid race, btw, that was MY FIRST SESSION ON THE BOARD. Those few runs in that race were the first runs through cones I had ever had on that board...that reminds me Mark, I'm not impressed by that excuse. Keith looked great against PD on that board, you think maybe I just had him scared??? heheheheheheheh

Mike, tell Sirie it should be around $100/hour for that kind of work....except when she does some tape for my board.
We are shooting for the Midtown Cyber Slalom event to be held on August the 17....I think that's a Sunday. Are you in?
A new PD Proto in the hybrid size...sounds promising.

yeah julius, you can get one of those grip tape jobs. Just get me a piece of tape and an outline of your board. Sirie is more than happy to do it for the modest price of $10/hour. The tape job on my fullnose took her roughly 3 hours to do and the job on my 34" GS board took her about 2 hours.....still interested?

Gary in VA, my best advice for you would be to check out the offerings from Bahne. They have a great starter setup very similar to the board I started on. Get the stiffest one you can find...based on your weight. Also, get some fairly soft wheels to start out with...in the range of 78a-82a...something that you can make grip and not worry about sliding out. Small diameter wheels, like La Costas/Stingers or Cambrias will be best for starting out because of their speeding up and slowing down ease. Go to www.bahneskateboards.com for the board and tell Jack I sent you.

My local skateshop owner and I have gotten interested in slalom but there isn't anybody in town who does it so we've got some questions for you. First is there a website that explains the different classes (types) of slalom? How to set up a proper course? What kind of courses the different style of boards are made for? I'm looking at buying my first slalom board and am wondering what style to buy to start out and considering my size (215 lbs) I'm looking at buying a good board to start out on. Any suggestions?

I'll run the next event, because it most likely will be the "cyber slalom challenge"I think everyone is going to have to chip in and make it work. I'm looking for a good location so if you have any suggestions that would be great.
John, I'll take you up on your offer to help...Julius you too.
And, since this is the Ask Mike a question forum... Mike, are you going to ride in this event so I can put you down for 2nd place? : )

Yo mike, can I get one of those cool grip tape jobs just like on your fullnose? August looks like there will be another Midtown race. Something about 25 cones,174 feet and a timer. Braggin rights, BBQ and Animal Chin are in the works for this one! Julio.

Hi,
I wouldn't mind organizing a fifth Midtown race as long as we get enough volunteers to help out so that Julius and I can race also. I'm figuring we'd need at least three more volunteers. That would make five total including Julius and I. Anyway, it would be cool if we could get something together for August. Let me know if you'd like to volunteer and also, let me know if there are any locations we should consider.
See ya, John

You're right Gary. It's always about who's there and stoke. Competition is a byproduct of us all getting out there to ride. Fun, friends and exhilaration are what it's really all about. Thanks everyone for keeping the stoke stong!

Miko, we won't be at Shoreline on Thursday because of a concert at Shoreline. The truth is everyone makes a race what it is...and everyone that has raced in any of the races that we've had has contributed to the success.

Sure we have a pretty large crew of folks up here from Santa Cruz, to SF, San Jose, Oakland and beyond, but truthfully, Gary Holl and his Midtown boyz have brought incredibly reliable regularity to our slalom scene. Without that, I would probably be a lot more lonely wiggling around on roads mostly alone.
Thanks Gary, Julius and John Kim for keeping the stoke alive and burning. I'm so damned tired I'm not going to make it up this week. Dangitall!
(Now if we could just get Gary and co. excited about a little downhilling... )

Sully helped too...he was so unselfish with his time he cone headed for another two hours of grudge matches after the race was over. Sully you rock.
My point is... very few people have run the races but it takes everyone to make it work.
