pushing around the first cone
On 8/9/2003 mike maysey wrote in from (65.234.nnn.nnn)

hmmm, push, push, push...pick your foot up and set it down on the board........I go in toe-side because I can get one last push in before picking up my foot and setting it down. It's easy for me since I'm not a mongo pusher, allows me to get one last push before getting into the course...not to mention I don't have to worry about knocking a cone over as I turn around the first cone.

hey george
On 8/8/2003 mike maysey wrote in from (65.234.nnn.nnn)

I didn't get home until late tonite...Clayton's bachelor send off was tonite. Picture this, a bunch of Bay Area skaters and some other close friends gathered around a pallet fire on the best drinking beer and talking story.

Good times...anyway, George...I'll have time to get to your question more specifically tomorrow night. I've been working this new job lately where I'm putting in 10-12 hour days, so I haven't had as much time as usual to answer.

Tomorrow........

George's backside
On 8/7/2003 Ravitch wrote in from (63.207.nnn.nnn)

Well I would tell you one thing - to drive your weight down through the trucks onto the wheels - consciously thinking about/doing that requires being closer to the stance that is right over the trucks. Other than that, I would try to lean back a little more cuz you are sliding our from the rear wheels - you got lbs. for traction so use them, baby!

Gov Mike Maysey
On 8/7/2003 Julius wrote in from (199.2.nnn.nnn)

Mike, you still have time to run for Gov.
You could make all those killer slalom spots legal
on Sundays. Just think, charge $1.00 to each rider,
we could balance the budget! I think there's something like
200 billion slalom riders in California on Sundays.
I would vote for Mollica, but he left California years ago,
"Nature Boy Gov " Looks like the Terminator will be my vote. Gary Coleman? Larry Flint ?
Shoreline tonight, Camp Holl.

George, scroll back a page or 2. I had a similar ? for Mike a week or 2 ago and he gave some real good tips. I suck and I'm slow, but I do know that since widening my stance I've been able to put more downforce on the rear and increase traction.

backside ugh!
On 8/7/2003 george g. wrote in from (159.87.nnn.nnn)

O.K John, here goes, sliding out at offsets. no wheel bite ever as far as I can tell. always backside offsets and the whole board seems to go away from under me. I can usually bring in a rear wheel slide or drift. it feels like grease in under the 4 wheels. I may not be looking over my left shoulder far enough. I am regular foot. I am trying to look at video to check it. Maria C is just getting to the Elsinore video.

I was thinking about a longer wheelbase for big courses. I rode a borrowed 35" Ick from Rick in the G/S at WLAC and shaved almost 2 seconds. I was looking for more speed and probably could have run Avilas in 75a or 72a if i had em. I ran basically the same course with the shorter board and had it go away from me. (30 inch deck, 20 inch inner to inner) I weigh in at right around 205 now and have size 13 feet on a six foot frame. and maybe I just need to practice big speed offset more??? loosen my trucks to help the turn? I'll try anything.

John, I am happy for you and Adissa and new mutt too. See ya at Morro Bay.

road rash
On 8/6/2003 Ravitch wrote in from (63.207.nnn.nnn)

George,

Glad to hear you're out there racing - I think Mike and the rest of us could use a little more info to diagnose the situation. Are you sliding out, bottoming out with wheel bite, is it happening higher on the course or at the bottom. Does it happen when you go around stingers, offsets?

Adisa said to say hi to you and Kim. She leaves Hopi and AZ tomorrow to return to the bay area with our new puppy, walpi.

Sirie rocks - I think she should start giving some skating pointers and come to think of it, I would back her as a gubernatorial candidate. Move over, Arnold.

back side ouch!
On 8/6/2003 george g. wrote in from (159.87.nnn.nnn)

Hi Mike, for the second time, in the last two races I beefed hard on a backside turn. these are on a G/S course once on the WLAC hill and now Loretta. it seems as though my board just gives away, and i am landing on my ass/side. at Loretta St. i hit hard enough to hurt my day and for that matter my week, I'm still hurting. Currently running a Cross fat ass or an Ick Carrera (same basic 20 inch inner hole to inner hole) tracker offset r, both wedged. both times on Avalons. both on the 80a's.

you have any thoughts? these boards are super stable at speed. I have been to some of the bigger hills this year, Elsinore, WLAC and now Loretta. no problems with the speed just those darn backside offsets! thanks.

hey julius -
would love to post a pic but my computer and camera don't seem to be on speaking terms at the moment. i will get one up as soon as i can figure out a remedy. can you post pics on these boards? finishing a board this week too so i will put them all up.
thanks for the interest - i can get a trace of your board at the next race if you are there. fyi raising 10 to a power indicates an exponent not multiplication , however, given your unique IQ, you achieve the same result either way.

can you post a picture of Mikes board for all to see
the quality of your work. Very nice work indeed!
Thanks for all your help at the local events.
Lets see, my IQ ( 1 ) x $10.00hr
still = $10.00 !
What a deal!
Hope to see you @ the next Midtown Race.

Griptape for the Ladies and Gentlemen
On 8/6/2003 Sirie wrote in from (128.218.nnn.nnn)

thanks for the interest mike has been passing on to me about the griptape jobs i have done for his boards. i am happy to do boards for all! the price he quoted earlier was actually what i had given in response to an inquiry about a large quatity of work - hence the by the hour rate. for individual boards i can do it anywhere from 50 to 100 bucks a board, depending on size, intricacy of design etc. except for you gary - thanks for the PR dollface - your board is on the house. feel free to email me at the above email or just talk to mah man. grip with style makes you fly! ;)

happy skating...

Griptape

Hey Julius-
Sorry to hear you have to pay for women, but I only do griptape - not kooks. However, I will more than happy to make you and extra special offer JUST FOR YOU: take the quote Mike gave you and raise it to the power of your I.Q. and you will have my rate per picosecond to do some tape for you. Given the demonstration of your intellect thus far it's probably a pretty killer deal.

Beginner's Question
On 8/4/2003 Gary in VA wrote in from (63.188.nnn.nnn)

As stated earlier I'm looking into getting into slalom. I see two sizes of boards. 30-32 inch boards and 36 inch boards. I'd guess that the shorter boards are for tight slalom and the longer for giant slalom? Is that right? I'm looking to start with TS as soon as I decide on a board.

Tight/Hybrid slalom session this morning with Ravitch, Gary, and Julius. Ravitch and Holl fast as usual. Julius making clean run after clean run on a fairly technical course. Upcoming spoiler in the tight slalom if it gets really tight in Morro Bay.

Had fun... Will scope out potential spots for other Midtown events with Gary and Julius.
