Hey Leo, get on your board and go. Oh wait...hold on a sec. When you get on your baord, give it a little time and you'll have it back shortly. Start slowly, get your body position back and build up speed slowly......do not go out and try to shatter your fastest times from when you were skating all the time...right away. If you bring it back slowly, I bet you'll be end up going faster than you were before you quit, or at least feeling that way. Sometimes for me, I take some time off and once I come back I feel like I'm going faster. Taking time off helps, I think, because I usually spend time thinking about skating, what some would call conceptualizing/visualizing. Then you get on your board and your body already knows what to do and you just go. Maybe you'll loosen up your trucks a little to get it back but before long you'll be rippin' it up like you were when you were skating all the time.

Tyler, learn to footbrake. Start off slow and simply take your foot off that you push with and put it on the ground. Apply pressure and come to a stop. You'll blow through some shoes, but it'll stop you. Or learn to pendulum slide, it might be cheaper that blowing through a set of Etnies. I personally don't know how to slide very well on my wheels so I just use footbraking to stop on steep hills. I'm going to learn soon how to Coleman Slide which will make another method to stop.

Miko, the board is a 31" roe Unlimited...that should give you an idea on the size of the trophy's....they aren't big but they aren't small. It's all 'bout the bragging rights anyway.
See you Sunday.

Pre-race voodoo diet...

Day two, 3:30am. Dinner after coming home late from work and a little Capitola night riding.
Salmon filet with dill, mashed potatoes, side of toast, Super Bock beer, toast and jam, more beer and another slice of toast to really put me over the top. The voodoo is working. You're all toast at the cyber-jam sunday am!
Going out for a bit of free-carving tomorrow on my new, beautiful ICK Carerra, (nicknamed the Golden Goose by Rick Howell). Every time I ride it I like it even more... the color is growing on me, and sure enough, I'm falling in love with this deck!
Anyone who wants to cruise slalom or longboards mid-day in Santa Cruz, give me a call! (Don't call before 10:30am!) We'll do 2 hour hill tour... 831.588.8162

WHERE ARE YOU MIKE? Did you turn off the lights on the East Coast today? Maybe you are skating @ your secret cyber slalom location gearing up for Sunday. The Trophy's for the Midtown series are way cool. It's up for grabs in the open class, Ravitch, Miko, John Kim and even Myself have a chance of taking the whole series in points. JP.

Thank's Mike, I knew pushing was the part I missed, getting better. Watch out for HC, he laid down a great time yesterday at the proposed cyber location. John and Myself struggled yesterday, and Gary simulated Mr. Dongs time by extending the start box from 3 ft to 12ft. Man, It's gonna be hard to break the low 8. Your a maniac Mr Dong, or you don't have a life outside cyber slalom HA HA. Hope to see you Sunday! JP.

Julius, Shoreline times don't count...it's downhill. To break MD's time I'd have to practice for months and learn to enter the course on the right (one more push). I'd be lucky to get a 9 second time..
Miko, we rode Saturday at the usual SC spot. We started pretty early 7:30AM.

Every dog has his day... I'll be there at least until 9:30 or 10am, at which point I'll have done whatever damage there is to do! Then it's off to work!
Did you guys session this am? (sunday) I was too trashed and didn't get up until near 10am. Late work schedule is killing me. I'm riding somewhere tomorrow early evening though... maybe I'll do some cyber!
The new ICK Carrrera is set up and ready to go. Stiffer, meaner, and ready to rock. Watch out!

Board Stability and Adjustment...

Just a few more cents worth on this George... I've got a Retro-Flattie and a Carrera, ax2ax on the Flattie is about 26", Carrera ax2ax is 23.75"
I've found softer bushings to be a huge help in getting firmness in my setup, while still having enough give to get it to turn. Medium Tracker Stims in the rear and Soft Stims in front have been working great for me.
The Flattie is so stiff that it seems to have the torsional ridgidity to turn very sharp despite it's long w/b. The Carrera is more all-around and seems able to handle the big, fast courses, but I'm now finding that I like to set it up for a more nimble medium sort of course... semi-tight to bit hybrid. I now use the Flattie for the really big stuff and it rocks.
I've begun riding with my bushings a bit more snug like Mike related as well. (But I've been riding my setups really squirrely loose, so it would seem that I'm evolving to a more precise and stable setup.)
Lastly, on my Carrera and more so on the Flattie, for traction, I manage my rear foot placement, pulling it slightly forward for tighter, less-offset cones, and rearward over the rear truck for big offsets and high-speed arcs. You can still raise your heel for faster offsets that far back, but it takes more work with your arms and a more vigorous movement of the arms and body to get the fast response.
Charlie Ransom is a classic example of the lifted heel down-and-driving GS turning style.

Sup George?
The longer board will help immensely. I always like to tell a story to explain, so here goes.
I had a tough time with shorter wheelbase boards (20" inner to inner) like the GS/Hydrid in bigger courses. I had to tighten my trucks a lot. I wanted to avoid wobbs. Who wants to crash at 20 mph because they didn't set up their board properly? Problem was, avoiding wobbs compromised turning agility and consequently, traction. When I first started slalom, I had my trucks pretty tight. I used the stock Indy bushings which are hard as a rock. I loosened them and ran better. I still had trouble on big offsets because the board just wouldn't turn enough when I really needed it to. I changed bushings to something softer and was able to do tight and offset equally well. As I progressed, I thought I needed to run my trucks tigher because in my minds eye, I saw myself gaining velocity if I could not only push off of my board, but off of my bushings. I tried the hard bushings again and skated some very technincal courses and would blow out almost every run. I got rid of the stock bushings, got some Trackers and now run Bones yellows and blues. I use harder one in the back (truck turns less) and soft ones in the front (truck turns more). I also wedge both trucks forward on my hybrid and GS boards so that the front is loose and is turning a lot while the rear is wedged forward and tight...not turning much at all. These days, I've gotten to the point where I know as soon as I roll into a course, if I should tighten or loosen my trucks, or I thought I did until a couple weeks ago. At WLAC, I won the GS. I got some crucial tips...one of them was to tighten my trucks a hair. The day before at WLAC, I rode that board on a much more technical course. Bulky told me to tighten my trucks, said I looked sketchy around the last major offset coming in toward the finish line. I took the advice and put about a half turn on front and rear and won the race on the next run. I think the longer wheelbases also allow you to avoid wobbs just because the trucks are so far spaced apart...but I'm not physicist.
Conclusion, get a longer board 34-36" total length and 23-25" inner hole measurement, also get it very stiff. If I were you, you mentied ICK, get a flattie or wait a little bit because I know Turner is getting ready to release some production boards. with the longer board you'll be able to loosen your trucks, carry more speed and avoid wobbs with the long wheelbase.
