Yeah man, I had to take what I could get. It's nowhere near what I really need to survive, but it's fun and a great group of people to work with. I also need to find a replacement for my stolen mountain bike and hopefully being in the environment will afford me the opportunity to find a good bike at a price I can handle. I'll be at the Worlds but unfortunatly Tahoe is out of the question at this point.

Nice tape job on David's downhill machine Sirie! Radness.
David -- Don't think I can make it due to work mid-day sunday, and hanging with my son, Jackson, saturday. What are your job hours? I could schedule major S.C. session time tuesdays, thursdays or fridays. I start work at 4pm both days.
Maybe do some schooling on Bonny Doon Road? It's epic, right here, and we should have at least be able to get down the sucker. Come down and we'll do a recon drive and maybe run a couple of the crux sections...

Wow Mike!
I've often thought about working at a bike shop. Have some quals. Keep the faith brother, the economy might suck, but we're all in this together. I can't believe how many people I know who aren't making near the wage they made 2 years ago.
Will you be able to make the Worlds with your new job? Hope so.

Well Miko, I'm actually starting a new job this morning at Mike's Bikes in San Rafael. Since it's retail, I'm going to be giving up at least one day a weekend from now on. At a 'cost' of having at least one day off during the week, so surfing might be better this Fall!!!

Remember that the pointy part of the deck is in the front.
Mike! Any free weekday time between job interviews to come down to S.C. for a little downhilling or slalom?

Brady, the only time that works is on a board in the 29-30" range. For instance, on my 34"...my feet are where I described below and my back toe is about a foot away from my front heel. As I said however, sometimes I turn my back foot to more perpendicular to the center of the board for extra drive on heelside turns. Chaulk outlines are a great idea. You learn a lot with that.

Here`s a number learnt to me by John Gilmour...
Try to tap the heel of your front foot with the toe of your rear foot.
I, myself, have trouble with this technique bit I think the purpose is to set your feet in a ckose semi0parallel stance.
Naturally I tend to fall into the ole surf stance, and use more upper body movement than I should.
Another trick of John`s is to chaulk your feet`s outline on your board where they should be, and see if you can attain a proper stance then.

Dude, keep doing what you're doing. Don't worry about technique unless you really get into it and maybe consider racing. I only say that because the first time I skated cones I realized I wanted to race and began really studying myself and those around me to become technically more sound. It helped skating around great skaters like Jack Smith and Paul Dunn, but frankly it only helped because I eventually wanted to be able to beat them....racing.
Is that random of what? Hey, it's been a long day of skating today and if any part of this seems vague or just plain dumb.....let me know.

I wouldn't say that but definately get your feet as much on the board as you can. Stay away from your pool skating stance for slalom.....you'll just hit cones with your heels. I would guess you are talking about right with a 60 degree to the center line of the board. Don't try to modify your stance in one session either. Go at a little at a time. You'll also find you use different stances for different courses. You'll find what works best for you for sure.

Just came back from my first cone session, and man is it fun! I did it all downhill, on my sector 9 cosmic II (38" long, 25" wheel base) with indys 169. It`s the closest thing to a slalom board I have. Now the reason I`m posting is to expand Gary`s question. What stance should I have in a board this long? Right now it's sort of how you described the front foot should be, and my back foot is more towards the middle of the board. This worked well for cones about 7-8 feet apart.
I`m not too worried about time or speed, I`m just having fun with my friends, but if I can turn safer and tighter, why not???

Mike -- So you are saying that I need to change my stance, which is my feet almost perpendicular (90 degrees) to the board, to my feet being more inline with the board (maybe 60 degrees)?

Gary in VA, Stoked to hear about your session. Sounds like you had a great time with it. So, you don't know about your stance. That's easy. The best thing to do on a board that size is to kick your heels up onto the deck of the board. If I'm not mistaken, I be you ride it right now with your heels hanging over the edge?? Simply kick your heels up onto the board. Also, and this is key, line up your front foot so your toes cover up the inner truck bolts. Now step on the tail with your back foot and make sure your heel covers the inner truck bolts of the rear truck. this will give you optimal traction as well as get you into the flex of the board. I've seen those boards at the Breck race, they are nothing short of beautiful....many with little or no flex. Sometimes, for me, once I get a board wired......for instance this 34" board I recently got, I can move my feet around on it. Put my front foot closer to the middle and move my back foot up into the camber. This way I can really work the flex in the board....but for traction sake, I usually keep my front toe covering the inner truck bolts in front and my back heel covering the inner trucks bolts in back.
Hope this helps..............

Monday was the first time I got to try slalom and I'm hooked! Got hold of some cones and took out my Bahne Classic with Trackers and BDS Shogos (85a). Went to a local park with a friend and set up 16 cones 8 feet apart on a newly paved section of walk that had a slight downhill to it. After getting used to the motion we moved the first 5 cones to 6 feet. More runs and then all at 6 feet. Had a blast! Was dripping by the end but had a big smile. Now for a question. I got one of the new Roe maple/carbon fiber boards set up with Tracker (X up front, S in back), and a set of Cambrias (72 back, 76 front), 1/2 inch risers. This board is a bit shorter (28", 17.5 wb) than the usual skateboards I ride (for ditches and parks). What stance is proper for tight slalom? Right now my feet are over the trucks and I'm guessing I'm not getting full use of the flex.

Julius, yeah, you could say that. I've actually been fishing way more this summer than skating or surfing. I rediscovered the thrill of fishing on creeks/rivers. Catching the little native trout is always fun. Grab a rod, reel, salmon eggs and a sixer and you're ready to fish.
I'll drop you my resume.....

Hey Mike, Looks like your on the Pro Fishing Tour. Sounds like you had a bad heelside turn, and hit the rocks. Would that be a Hybrid or a Tight river course? Look for Fishing Pro Mike Maysey on the next episode of Bass Masters on TNN. If your still looking for a sales job, drop me your resume, I got a few connection's to check out for you. I always knew Fishing and Slalom were related. j.

I didn't bring any home, although quite a few of them now have sore lips from the hook. I don't generally like to keep my fish, I like to catch and release. There's some really hot spots on the San Lorenzo River that I've found in the last few weeks!!

Sorry, my spelling stinks. Alright for those of you, like Gary, who don't know about trout fishing I'll make it short. In order to get where the fish are you have to hop across rocks that are usually wet and slimy with moss. I was hoping on said rocks barefooted on Saturday, slipped and slammed my left heel into a rock and came up with a big bruise right on the point of my heel. Not to mention landing squarely on my buttocks. Movement was tough, so I decided to sit out.....get it?
