I haven't been around lately...I'm in the process of moving across town and don't have a computer at home with internet access right now. I'll try to get caught up here at work from time to time...but I'm at work and won't be able to invest as much time in the near future to this board.
talk to you all in a while............

Paul, I've only seen 2 decks snap but I've only been slaloming about a yr. They were both identical turner gs hybrids--It was 100 degrees in the shade in Ms. this summer and just as he came down the ramp it snapped under his front foot. He then borrowed another and it did the exact same thing--He looked like he weighed about 210 at least. Turner graciously replaced them both---I bought 1 of them and hv had no problem. I weigh 170 and hv been down the same ramp MANY times since then. It's still a mystery as to whether the heat or his weight or both caused it--

I'm glad I found this q+a site--mike,-HELP! I'm getting ready for the local race in Jackson Ms. (Luna Slalom Jam) in april--I'm riding a turner gs hybrid w/an offset indy from chicken..I've started putting my rear foot further back as you suggest and it does seem faster--with only the ball of my foot directly on top of the truck or a little behind (thats all there's room for) I seem to be able to push much harder and faster on the backside-----HOWEVER--I seem to be having trouble maintaning control on my frontsides and am starting to hit cones. Suggestions??? It feels strange because the board doesn't flex as much yet my times are getting faster--despite the cone carnage--

I haven't been to the Berk Park since you and I were there. I need to check it out, but there's been some more pressing issues taking place and taking presidence as of late for me.

Mike, wood is not good. It is very, very good. I can pump my new TS board uphill better than any board I've ever ridden. So well that its inspired me to train by pumping uphill. Plus with true 8mm axles it has insane traction.

jus' tryin' to keep it real...
Tiger went from using carbon and glass composite clubs, to steel. Steel is considered a primitive material.
I'm tellin' you, the back foot beyond the back truck is important. Wait until other people discover it...you'll see.

I second what Pauliwog said a few posts (and weeks) back: Thanks for an interesting, thought-provoking and virtually abuse-free forum. (Guess I did miss some abuse back around Christmas, judging by the faded-out and "disappeared" posts, but I consider that just a blip.)
Anyway, I love all of the theoretical talk about what works and what doesn't, and why. At some level, it does matter, and it does help. Maybe a lucky few out there just "know" everything intuitively, but the rest of us can sometimes benefit by, you know, thinking about equipment and technique. Tiger Woods was an incredible golfer with incredible results several years back, but even he went back to the drawing board and re-engineered his swing, because he thought he could be even better. That's what this kind of discussion about the pros & cons of a stiff wood board, perfectly aligned trucks, variable flex, etc. might lead to: helping people who want to improve to do so by re-engineering or re-imagining their board, trucks, stance so they work even better than before. It doesn't happen overnight or without conscious effort, but it can pay off.
What got me thinking about all this, Mike, was the discussion about stiff wooden boards, offsets, flex and stance. Each person kind of gave a new angle on things. I also enjoyed reading your idea about having the back foot *behind* the rear truck. Will it work? Who knows? But it's worth a shot.

Ummm, where might this GuadoCanyoRoadyo be-o? I'm dying to do some d-hilling.
Bill is going to flow me a copy of Northwest as soon as it's in the shop. Can't wait to see it.
David... when's the next time you'll make it down? Maybe we can all go for a combo day of park/downhill?
I've gone back to school 1/2 time and am still working at Trader Joes. I'm taking medical classes and will probably work towards a radiology certificate. I can medical assist in the meantime possibly. Busy, busy - but Cabrillo College has a pretty sick campus on the side of a big hill, so there's some killer runs there. I almost always take a couple runs between classes, then barge a circuit down through a parking garage to the bottom, where I cross a street and get another 1/4 mile of mild carving. Mostly big ICK and Gumball sorta carving. So far no bust on the campus barge, but it's posted.
Mike... looks like a swell is coming in this weekend, but my doc says no surfing until I've been well for 3-4 days. So maybe surf late next week...

northwest is a killer film. all about these skate park builders who build their own world-class parks in small towns in the northwest. Orcas island and bainbridge come to mind, from the pictures, they look pretty sick! i would be out skating them if it were'nt for the foot of snow on the ground. blast! oh well
oh yea, the gravity flow video has some excelent sliding clips, you should check that out miko.
hey mike, you had a chance to ride guadalupe canyon road yet?

I second Mike's review of Chlorine. Hilarious Hackett/Olson commentary. There's another vid out called "Northwest" that they say really kills it. Haven't seen it yet, but will get it soon. All the insane parks up there. Check it out!

Wow... I've been incommunicado for about a month due to a hard-drive crash and no $$$. Anyway, I'm BACK! Been sick for most of december, but have totally gotten back into the bowls - Sunnyvale, Ben Lomond - BIG FUN! Not sure about much of anything, but I've really missed skating with the crew and feeling the speed. I'll get myself back on my board soon and look forward to seeing you guys later this spring! Xmas present to myself was a 6'10" squash tail to do some pocket surfing this winter... waves are local and free for me so this is my surf-skate-stoke solution! Surfing anyone?

Thanks for the clarification Pete.
George, I'm not sure. I don't run cones that tight. I go to about 5' maybe just slightly tighter (4.75 or so).
Thanks Pauliwog...just tryin' to keep it real over here.

Axle to axle

Hey Mike, Merry Christmas. I was wondering now that people are talking about 3 and 4 foot cone sections (Korten is back!) what type of wheel base are we talking here? I mean axle to axle? inner to inner is interesting but with some offsets, Radikal and PVD's, it appears the base stays in the same place and the whole truck moves an ich or so forward or backward.
Does any one know what size hill these cones are run? or is this for flat (er) courses? just when I get used to 5 footers the whole concept changes again.

rake

wrote in from
(64.172.nnn.nnn)
bike and skate rake remain constant no matter what the rider does. the rake is the offset distance of the axle centerline from the stearing axis. on some suspension forks it will change as the fork compresses, but that is a whole nother topic.
anyway, it is constant on a skate.
wheelbase and steering angle do change as the board is flexed.
