Who's up for a Golden Gate Park or East Bay slalom session this Sunday JUNE 6th? We could do a skate park too after slalom, if anyone wants to do that too. First people to respond get to pick the spot and time.
I'll bring 30 Turner cones and four or five slalom boards from my quiver if anyone wants to try out different set-ups.
Anyone from Newbies to Pros welcome!

I have a old Team TI Raleigh track bike with 70s Campy NR stuff on it. I think I have it geared 46 / 17. Fun, but no brakes. The 26" BMX bike is cool, but needs a bigger freewheel. On a slightly related note, I drove the pace car for the CSC Cup criterium in Virginia on Sunday. 1k course w/ 6 turns, Saab turbo 5 speed convertible. I was taking VIPs from CSC out for laps, and on the "get ahead of the field to allow to to unload and load passengers" laps, I was drifting it around the apexes and really , uhhhh.... "exciting" the VIPs. I only got to watch the pros through the rear view mirror, but I did see the cat 1-2 race for a few laps while I was stopped, and they were FLYING. Just being able to hang with the racer ride on Saturdays is enough for this old, fat man.
And to keep it on topic. Anyone cross train for slalom with a bike?

Yeah, lately, not getting spat off the back of the Saturday morning racer ride means more to me than doing my usual miserable job at our local races.
Who'd have ever thought I'd have more fun riding up hills at 190 bpm than wiggling down them.
One of the most awesome areas to ride mountain bikes in MD is right out the back door of my new office. I'm going to try my 26" bmx bike there with a bigger freewheel, but I suspect a new MTB isn't far off...

I'm working Sundays still. I haven't been skating slalom much lately. I've mainly been riding my bike to and from work with some rides thrown in on my days off. My legs are getting very strong as are my lungs. I've been skating some parks on my days off too. The bike crash has been shaken off. Thinking of maybe racing this season. Probably only La Costa and the Worlds with my schedule being the way it is right now.
I miss you guys...

Seems like people are not available this Sunday, or are still too sore from last Sunday and can't find the strength to get on a board again?
If next Saturday the 29th works better for an East Bay session or Sunday the 30th for Golden Gate Park, post a note here or click my name and email me!
Maybe it's true that the slalom resurgence is starting to die off.

One spot is a 6-foot wide asphalt path next to the canal on the Martinez - Pleasant Hill border. Has a nice, medium steep lazy-S-curve to skate down and a long smooth uphill run-out. Plenty of parking on streets right next to the skate spot.
Another spot that's more mellow with butter-smooth alphalt, is around the Duck pond at Diablo Valley College. Starting below steps of Music building, then curving around toward student union. However, if you are apt to bail and shoot your board out, it could go swimming in the pond!
3rd spot is an office building parking lot with long slopes of varying pitches and great asphalt, but requires a u-turn or foot breaking at end of course. Great for long board carving too.

Good session today in SF - Sully was on it, no stranger to speed and thrilling Paso Xcross descents, he is proving to be a fast wiggler as well. PVD designer Pete Verdone joined us, JK, HC, the initimable Jonathan Reese and Molly too. A cavalcade of sun worshippers, joggers, babes, jerks and enebriated souls passed by. Also an old high school friend showed up to ride, he introduced me to a wayne brown skateboard w/RR 2's in 1975. Today, he padded up, got on my board and proceeded to slam after his second run - broken collarbone - off to the ER we went. Drag, but overall a fun day. Mike Maysey - where are you? Watch out for traffic in SF related to the HUGE Bay to Breakers race that day. But I bet Golden Gate Park streets will be near empty, with many of the active people doing the foot race instead.
I'd LOVE to be at a slalom session to learn from the better skaters, but already committed to a vert session at Ripon where we will be test driving Bull Dog Skates new 8-wheeler protoype and other quiver oddities.
Is anyone interested in a GGP or East Bay session on the 23rd? We could do a skate park too after slalom.

Tight Slalom with Georgio

Hey "G", I went out and set a pretty tight hybrid course yesterday on my 8 ply woodie 19" wheel base (it has multiple holes/wheel bases- if I'm going to make a "defensive" non flex deck, I figured I might as well use a "one-gun" system since in all wheel bases it still doesn't flex and is just as flat Vs a cambered flex board which needs to be "tuned" for the riders weight at each different wheelbase requiring a quiver of different boards for different course types). It's a different ride to be sure, but I'd have to say that once you get used to it - wood IS good and definately has it's place - plus it's a cheaper way to go. Later- Paul Howard

Hey Georgski, the 18" is from inner to inner baseplate mounting holes. I really find that much more than that and I don't turn through a 5' course too well and much less than that and I feel "couped up" on the deck. Trackers seem to do quite well for me and I use a home made 13 maybe 16 degree wedge on the front truck for all my setups now - quicker response, less wheelbite probability, feels good, etc. I think PVD's and Radikals are definately great slalom trucks but for that much money I can go to Morro Bay or Breckenridge and still get waxed by Noah or Ravitch or whoever. Luca teaches a good lesson about skill vs equipment. Though I'm eager to try the flat non-flexing woodie I made in "defensive" situations where immediate reaction and quick turning (and more controlled sliding) counts more than the energy storage and return for pumping in a cambered flex deck as used in an "offensive" situation where one sacrifices some turn reactivity to pump for speed. Just some thoughts, Schlater-Paul

TIGHT boards

Hey Paul back! is that 18" axle to axle or inner to inner? I know that PVD's can uses an inner to inner and have a greater ax-axle ratio than Trackers or Seismics. The same goes for the rear Radikal, I guess??? I don't know enough about them. I only rode Hollien's board at Elsinore and it was soooo smooth and turny. Keith told me at the time the were still "protos". I haven't ridden them since. But Keith's board was definately a "T/S" deck, even tho he rode it like a madman on the big Elsinore hill.
Back to PVD's. I did ride a little on Noah's set up. Most guys get scared cause it is their race board and I am like 200lbs. That's why I am still on Trackers, cause I never worry about them! But, some guys only run a PVD front. A few like Noah run em for everything. Tight slalom is a equipment nightmare at least for me, if I am not dialed in, I get waxed. That's why I am working on it, seems like this coming season, things are gonna get TIGHT!

GEORGE G.: Hey, How's it going? I've been using 18" wheelbased boards lately and if its flat then I go with more camber (no more than 1/2") and as the hill gets steeper and/or the cones get tighter I go to flatter stiffer decks, I just made a solid 8 ply flat with no flex as an experiment but I haven't had much time to test it, it seemed perfectly fine on flat in fromt of my house. I can easily do 6 foot cones on my Roe unlimited with a 20" wheel base, but for anything tighter I've really gained an appreciation for my Fibreflex GS Lite Flex-1 (165 lbs) at 18". I've been riding Tracker RT-S/RT-X with 8mm axles by MMW. One set is 100mm and the other is 80mm wide, these seem to work well for me as an off set to me almost is overkill on 5 ft or tighter cones, though I have some Chicken Indy 88's with an offset rear that work pretty well. For Bushings I've been using yellow and green Tracker Stims, Powell/Bones white with blue(soft) and hand carved coned and hourglassed blue Doh Dohs. For wheels I use good 'ol Stingers or 65mm NoSkoolz if I've got enough speed, and shaved narrower 3DM Avalons if I need more speed. That's probably more than you want but I like to blab. Later - Paul Howard

Hello everybody,
I am interested in what boards and wheelbase you are riding for tight slalom, as well as wheels and trucks. I mean I know Olson rode Bennets and some big white wheels at the worlds but what is happening now. Thanks George
