HEY RICH, I posted my BBQ on the Contest Calender in advance which helped get a better turnout than it probably would have otherwise, just a thought. Later- Paul

Non Race Slalom Get-togethers

RICH SAYERS: Hey, Great Idea! I did the same thing in Salem Oregon at the Soap Box Derby Hill only as part of a BBQ/Slalom get-together (non-race). It was the Cascade Slalom Assoc Series season opener and it was a blast, in some ways more fun than a race since there's no waiting in line, more riding and blabbing and we had over 30 riders, over 50 if family and friends were included. We changed the courses 7 times and stuffed ourselves silly with BBQ. If I wasn't so far away and If I wasn't going to Seattle on the 4th I'd be way into coming down.Have a good Time! - Paul Howard

I still like those PVD's...I just can't afford them otherwise I'd have a set.
Unfortunatly I won't be making it to Hood River. Just don't have the coin. I'm planning to do only two races this season. La Costa and the Worlds.
Man, a 4th of July session sounds super fun. I have to work....damn it. I'm working on getting a 'regular' job so hopefully I'll be back on the weekends off program.
I've been getting some slalom practice in lately along with mucho biking. In the last 4 days I've logged around 175 miles. Got a 60 miler in the morning with some of the guys from the shop.
Anyway, enough rambling...I'm outta here.

It's on! San Francisco Golden Gate Park session Sunday 4th of July starting at 10:30 am and lasting until at least 12:30 am. Comet Bomb Squad member David Price will be there-- hopefully someone representing other good companies/teams like 3dm, Bahne, Ick, Gravity, NHS, Pocket Pistols, Roe and Sector Nine will show too.
For newer slalom skaters like me, I'll bring extra boards and share tips learned from skating legend Jack Smith last weekend at the Colorado Cup in Denver -- I ran slow, but had one clean run and one two-cones down run!

Wednesday - - I'm feeling pretty crappy right now, and am thinking I may be smart to rest. I've done about 4 slalom sessions since we rode, and surfed today... Now I'm feeling really bad! 8-) Rest needed! I'll call or shoot out an email tomorrow night if I'm feeling better, but at this point I think I'm out for a few days.
Mike - Are you going to La Costa?
Narrower trucks - I've been riding with a 101 front and 88mm Chicken offset in the rear and it feels great. I think you just get a more immediate edge transfer, so there's no lag time. This *might* just keep you from throwing too much weight into a turn cause you're not getting quick enough response from a wider truck. Does that make sense?
I cut down a set of Randall 150's and noticed the same effect. More responsive without really changing turning geometry or radius. Just quicker transition to the next turn.

We will be having a slalom session around 5pm, wednesday night in the South San Jose area at two great locations. The break in between will possibly include some killer downhilling, and there's downhilling available at the second slalom site as well, so bring a bigger board besides your slalom ride(s). Email me or call 831.588.8162 for more info!

i was crackin up watching you guys changing wheels constantly to try to get extra speed, only to have me smoke you every time..haha, how about next time we switch off helmets.
seroiusly though, practice your tuck in a mirror, and hold it for as long as you can. flat back, be like a "L"
so i've been thinkin recently, i get more scared running tighter slalom than i do downhilling, is that good or bad?

Mike... next wednesday night, come down with David. We're going to slalom in two primo locations, as well as possibly get some downhilling in. Get down here buddy! We'll talk early next week.

Next Martinez slalom session is Tues. Evening June 29 (at the request of Nick from Connecticut who is visiting his Uncle Bob in Martinez). Will start about 5:30 pm and last at least until 7:30pm. See Yahoo map and directions link two posts below...
How about a San Francisco Golden Gate Park session on Sunday 4th of July starting around 11am or noon?

While only two skaters showed up for Saturday's slalom, it was great. Acutally I was the only one skating because Animal Chin (real name Leonard F.) turned 90 years old in April and he does not get on boards any more. But A.C. is a great cone marshall and motivator. The asphalt at the spot is good; the hill steep enough to prepare for giant slalom at La Costa.
For the next slalom gathering, will offer free T-shirts to the first three people who email me then show up. First person to show gets first choice, etc. All are new, first quality T's:
- Size large Bahne-Cadillac Del Mar contest reproduction for the Lords of DT movie
- Size large Independent Trucks
- Size medium Powell skateboarding skeleton

Saturday June 19 East Bay Session

The time: 10 am to noon Saturday June 19th The place: Martinez - Pleasant Hill border. Center Ave. & Hidden Lakes Dr. It's a 6-foot wide asphalt path with a nice, medium steep lazy-S-curve to skate down and a long smooth uphill run-out. Beginners can skate the opposite direction for lower speeds. Plenty of parking on streets right next to the skate spot.
Anyone from Newbies to Pros welcome! I'll bring 30 Turner cones and four or five slalom boards from my quiver if anyone wants to try out different set-ups.
After, we could session the Martinez Marina Skatepark or Concord Park (Nice 8-foot deep half-pipe) if anyone wants!

Red Fullnose, medium flex shaped and glassed by Vince Turner. This board was last ridden by me to a 4th place finish in the 2002 World Slalom Championships. I don't have any pictures, but rest assured, the board is perfect (I take care of my shtuff). Only a few stress cracks in the gloss coat. Taking offers via email.

Great Slalom Session

The slalom session was great! Bruce "Norski" Bjortvedt really rocked and I learned a couple of things about running offset cones. First time slalom skaters Nicole and Paul did well -- Paul even looked good on the loose part of course with a big Carver longboard! Couple more folks that couldn't make it are itching to join the next session. Watch here for future sessions or click my link and I'll try to email everyone interested.
Golden Gate Park always has entertaining observers. Highlights included flirting with hot Russian babes and getting a chorus of "Oohs" and "Ahhs" from a Scandinavian group. Those Scandinavians love hand stands!
