I'm a little worried about you and your new setups...you were looking fast and smooth last night on that Radikal 'Assasin'. I can't wait to deck my decks with Radikal stuff.

What over doing it? You're just moving into a new threshold of racing stamina.
Hab's in the morning (10am) for killer hybrid practice sounds great, got to test my new setups!

Evo, I'm gonna have to pass on the Rolex, but I really appreciate the offer. I for sure want to skate manana at Habs on that killer edger to edger course we got.
Last night I had a hard time sleeping since my push foot ankle was all swollen. Those courses at SSS are starting to grind on me a little. I think I may have been overdoing it a little lately and need to back off a bit before I really hurt myself. It's too early in the 'season' to be on injured reserve.

Why, yes they are MANX. That's all I ride these days.
Also, I've been riding Radikal in front on my HS/GS board but yesterday I rode a Radikal in front on a TS setup for the first time ever and I have only one word to describe wiggling through 5.5' centers and 6.5' offsets...EFFORTLESS!! I was able to go faster, push in harder, accelerate, and decelerate with more precision than ever before on ANY other truck I've EVER ridden, EVER...and I've ridden Indy, Tracker, Seismic and PVD. Nothing works as well as RADIKAL, NOTHING. I can't wait to try them on the rear. If the front is any indication, they are going to rock in tandam.

which board?

'that looks like a Skaterbuilt deck you're riding and holding. Is it the same one in both photos?' no, the one on this page is longer with a larger kicktail. the one in the photo on the slalom board is more of a slalom shape hybrid/GS, the one I'm holding is the TS version. the big kick board is probably in the 20-22" wheelbase, while the one in the pic on the slalom page is 21" and the one I'm holding is 18".
'The riding pic looks like it might be a bigger deck.' What kind of wheelbase are you running? See above
'And is there any camber or flex to the deck?' no camber, very little flex, lots of concave.
'Are you just foolin' around on someone else's stick, or are you expanding your quiver?' it's actually a little of both. Dave Hegstrom can answer some questions here too. Dave?

Mike,
I still can't believe I actually beat you at the La Costa Giant Slalom. That was a rare day, I also beat Miko and Hackett. Might be my best race regarding Slalom. It probably won't ever happen again, but I've got a great memory :)
Best to you! Cliff

Judi, thanks for the wish. I might have also had something to do with skating with the Professor who's been pushing me and tweaking me into a slalom racer. I think it also had something to do with the front truck I was riding.
RADIKAL BABY YEAH!!!

Thanks Dave...
I had a blast. It was my kind of course (obviously).
I started out on my GS board, but it felt very sluggish in the top few cones where the turns were tighter. I took two timed runs on it but felt like I was maxing out. I jumped on my shorter board and took about half a second off my fastest time. The board was my Ick Hybrid set up with 21" inner hole to inner hole. Trucks...Radikal front, Tracker Mid-offset in the rear, wheels...Manx 80's in rear, 84's in front. Special sauce for the bearings kept them spinning fast fast fast!!!
The proto worked pretty well, however I didn't have it set up to go as fast as the course forced me to go. The front truck needs some treaking, but I'll get on that. It certainly made lots of people take notice.

Yeah Mike! Happy belated 33rd bro! I heard PumpStation was yours. Perfect. Man, you are frickin' dangerous and can take 1st on any type of course or situation. Which deck and setup did you ride during the event? How did the proto go? Props to you again for your all-around sickspeed...

First off, thanks for the b-day wish -G-, you remebered...damn, I'm already 33! Times fun when you're havin' flies.
Second...Gaz...
"Can anyone suggest some websites(retail or informational) where I can see and compare slalom equipment, and maybe get some gear advice for a newbie to slalom-especially decks and wheels."
Why yes...I would check out PocketPistolsskates.com...I think that's the site address. Or just search Google. You could also check out Roe Racing as well as Ick Stick. Some of these companies offer an entry level board suited to someone new to the sport. Then as you get better, you'll probably want a custom stick and some trick trucks and slick bearings.
In the meantime though...If I were you, I'd look into some sort of wood deck. Get something in a medium length, something with about 20" from inner hole to inner hole on the truck mounts. You will certainly want some soft wheels. 78a should do the trick. You should look into Manx and 3Dm, they make some of the best wheels on the market for slalom and are available in many hardnesses which you'll want to look into once you get comfortable turning at speed. As for trucks, you should probably check out Tracker. They are cheap and work very very well. Tracker makes front and rear specific trucks. Get an RT-X for the front and an RT-S for the rear. Don't concern yourself with offset trucks or anything too fancy at this point. Probably the most important thing to consider are the bushings for the trucks. You should check out Khiro bushings. They come in a variety of hardnesses so you can tune your turning to suit your ability and course settings. I would suggest setting the front truck up with the softest bushings and the rear with medium to hard bushings. Your going to want your front truck to do most of the turning while the rear truck simply trails. Make sure to wedge your trucks too. Do them so that the skinny part faces the nose of your board, this will speed up the turning of the front truck while slowing the turn of the rear truck. This is very important for when you start running cones at speed. It will help your board be stable at speed while retaining turning response. Bearings...I'd say get a set of Bones Reds...they're good bearings that go fast and are durable. I think that should about cover a new stick for you. Don't forget the grip tape...Jessup makes some good stuff. But really anything will work as long as it keeps your shoes on the board!

Hey man Clayton and I missed you last sat, we skated a new-old Berkley run you would dig. Grizzly Peak to Euclid, nice loop and something to do besides old tunnel road. Easy hitch back up Centennial and single guy like yourself can impress the college gals with your board on the way back through campus. If you ever come back up here I will sponsor you for a beer and I will even throw in the heckling for free, don’t think I will be visiting any of your famous traffic jams two soon. Win, and kick the brown bomber’s ass all right!
