GS set-up
On 9/18/2005 Dave wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

What do you think of running large 75-76mm
front wheels for speed+stability and 68-70mm
back for traction?

Do you like a longer WB 25" wedged for more turn
vs a shorter WB 22" wedged for less turn?

Slalom Flexes
On 9/13/2005 K-Rimes wrote in from Canada  (24.87.nnn.nnn)

Hi Mike, I was curious what the current trend is for a slalom deck. I was using a slightly flexy Comet Fluitt pro model and found I could use that better where as a Medium-Stiff Roe was uncomfortably stiff for pumping hard and getting through the cones.

I was curious whether the current norm is to use a flexy, stiff, or inbetween deck for TS. Should I get used to a stiffer deck or start off with a flexier deck in the first place? I weigh 180 pounds and thought that the Roe Unlimited in Medium would be a good choice for me. What do you think and what is the norm?

set ups
On 9/10/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (66.214.nnn.nnn)

Sorry I've not been by in a while...haven't had time to pop in here with preparations for the Worlds and all.

I have recently switched my truck widths for GS. I went considerably wider than usual. Although, I am riding a board for GS and SGS now that is rather large. I still go by the same rule though, keep the edge to edge measurement of the wheels roughly equal to the width of the board. If anything, go slightly wider. I find it helps with traction as well as feeling very positive when I power around a cone at full speed.

G/S'n with RT-X/S 129's
On 9/8/2005 Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (64.5.nnn.nnn)

Airin, for G/S I've found I really like an RT-X 129 with 15degrees pos wedge in front and either a TTC 130 neg wedged about 5-7 degrees or Seismic 30degree baseplate flat(no wedge) in back,You could also use a neg wedged RT-S 129 in back. I also pretty much use all 8mm conversions by MMW, PPS, Asphalt Playground or myself no matter what I'm slaloming on. I prefer this hanger width combined with grippins on a deck 9" wide. If you put Avalons or Manx's on, it gets a little wide but still do-able and feels good. Otherwise with Avalons or Manx's a 105mm truck works well. I am however, less than A-Class Podium material (Occassional B Class Podium material) so take that for what it's worth, I'm sure Maysey has good info. Good Luck-Paul

Where in Van you running cones?
On 9/8/2005 Greg Olsen wrote in from Canada  (209.205.nnn.nnn)

Hey A,
Where in Van are you setting up your slalom courses? I am coming out on Oct 21 for a B-Day party(50th of my closest cousin) and might be in for some cones. I went to UBC in 1975-76 and was the only person save my best late buddy Rick who skated around campus. Rain or shine I NEEDED that board to get from class to class as that campus is so huge. I lived near the university gates and would skate down Blanca to Belmont and down to Spanish Banks Beach every day just for the discipline of learning to handle the Super steep. Absolute control required. You could NOT miss a turn or you were toast. Skating in Vancouver would be a blast from the past for me. Thanks.
Greg

129 mm Trackers too wide?
On 9/8/2005 airin wrote in from Canada  (66.183.nnn.nnn)

I'm running 106 mm Tracker RT-S/RT-X trucks on my first slalom board right now but I have some extra 129 mm Tracker hangers and I wonder if it is worth scrunging up some baseplates for these and mounting them on a GS intentioned board. But I'm pretty new to slalom and not sure if 129 mm is really too long for most slalom applications. Most hanger widths mentioned around these forums seem to be in the very low 100's.

masters slalom?
On 9/8/2005 airin wrote in from Canada  (66.183.nnn.nnn)

Ok so I'm really gearing up to make slalom happen for me....maybe I'm starting a little late just shy of my 50th birthday. All the same I hope to be ready for some mellow competitions by next year. I wondered if there were any categories for my old bones...of course I can't hope for a women's masters class but what about a masters class in general, do any of the comps have 'em? And yes its true I feel it is just slightly unlikely I can whoop the dudes in their 20's and 30's when it comes to running cones .

wheelbase & truck length for GS
On 9/2/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (63.165.nnn.nnn)

Wheelbases huh??...well, that's a good one and a personal thing for most folks. I don't ride anything shorter than 22.5" for GS. I was riding the CK GS with it's 22.5 wheelbase for most of the summer. It worked very well accept when the cone spacing got really long and I had to occasionally double pump. I wanted something longer so, recently I set up a new (old) TrimDelux for the Worlds that has a 25" wheelbase. Yeah, that big. The plan was to run it at the Worlds for the SGS. I tested it on a GS course that I used to ride the 22.5 wheelbase on and made it work because my trucks were tuned well enough to make shorter gates, while the board is long enough to carry plenty of speed from cone to cone eliminating the need to double pump.

As for truck width, I would simply set the trucks and wheels up so that the edge to edge width of the wheels is right at the width or slightly wider than the deck. ie.) I set up the TrimDelux with my wheels roughly 9.25 inches in the rear and 9 inches in the front. I prefer slightly wider in the rear than front.

For any course, I would suggest riding the longest wheelbase you can get away with while still making the course.
