Raw times?
On 8/12/2005 Evans wrote in from United States  (66.214.nnn.nnn)

Raw times don't mean crap.

I could hit every cone and have the fastest "raw" time but I'll lose and winning is what It's all about.

People try to stroke their ego's by using the "raw time" reasoning. Learn how to go fast and run clean like Luca.

Mike would have won had he hit 1 less cone. I told him and the entire US Team if you don't hit cones you will win, it's proven in the results of all the races. Mike can run clean and go fast but got caught up in the go fast mentality.

Guys are getting beat because of cones. I don't suggest to go for the fastest "raw time". I suggest learn how to run clean and fast.

I hear it's cold in Breck, maybe one bed is better to stay warm. LOL

...Fastest Raw Time at Stockholm Special Slalom and 2nd only to Luca-but that'll be changing soon though...MM's gonna be in Breck with ballz on...who's gonna challenge him?
Mike's riding the snot outta his CK-MM1 proto which was inspired with the Professor's custom-shaped Ick's in mind...tear-drop, no-nose shape with a kicked up round tail...it looks like Cheyne Horan had a tight slalom nightmare or something...hehehe. Super Giant
On 8/11/2005 VinZzZ @ Paris wrote in from France  (82.234.nnn.nnn)

Hi Mike,
it's VinZzZ from Paris. We met in Stockholm.
Since I've discovered it, I try to give a look at your section that is really interesting. So perhaps you have interesting points of view about Super G?

I'll race soon a Super G slalom in the south of the French Alps. And I'm really wondering what set-up I should bring with me and try...
The length of the race won't exceed 440 yards (between 300 and 400m), the road is large but it's a mountain road, so the road floor won't be good.
They announce that the race will be OK for longskate and of course slalom board with slalom trucks but with tighten trucks!!!
Distances between cones: from 4m to 10m (13' to 32')
About 6% steep, so it's probably not so steep
(The super Giant is on the saturday morning and after it's a downhill race for the rest of the week end, so some "speed downhill only" racers will probably give a try)

I was thinking about trying:
- deck: my latest Pavel GS board (concave and tail) I'm now used to, with 22.5 inches inner hole measurement
or a longer board (23,3) , camber (but I never tried it yet)

- for the trucks: I could use 2 Randal II 150, or a slalom oriented combos: front Tracker RT-X 129 and rear Airflow OS Truck with spacers on the inside to have a wider configuration (OS is quite the same that the splitfire rear truck or TTC)

- for the wheels I will probably use 3DM Avilas (f:84A-r:80A, don't have softer) or Avalons (should I give a try the 78A on rear to grip on the bad road?)

I like Giant slalom, like in Stockholm for exemple but never run Super G (but I race downhill somtimes when I can go)
Do you have hints about this kind of courses?
The dilemn is : downhill oriented setup or keep on slalom truck??

getting started
On 7/28/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (24.176.nnn.nnn)

What you got should be fine to start with. I started riding slalom on a similar setup waaaaayyyyyy back in 2001. And yes, it makes sense to mount the wider truck on the rear and the narrow one in front. Or at least that's how I set up all my boards...slightly wider in the rear. Your truck choice couldn't be better for someone on a budget. Stay with the Trackers for now. Also, don't bother with Avila's. They are harder to control than smaller wheels.
I wouldn't be thinking about what type of 'slalom' board you should get right now. Get the basics of slalom down first. Then decide what type of board to throw your money at. Get opinions from everyone you know who slaloms and ride as many different types of boards as you can so that when you do decide what to get, you'll know exactly what you like and don't like. Now go run some cones!!!

getting started
On 7/26/2005 brad wrote in from United States  (155.229.nnn.nnn)

Mike,

I am just getting started thinking about slalom and wondering what would be a good all around setup for starting out.

I have a Gravity 32" GS and have ordered Tracker RTS 149 and RTX 129 to replace my RII 150's.

Should I invest in a slalom board at this point. I am thinking of a Roe Unlimited 32" or similar board, and is there a better truck choice (I can't afford Radikals)? If I should use the Tracker RTS and RTX, does the width choice of 129 up front and 149 in back make any sense. Also, should I get Avilas or can I stick with my Grippins while I am learning.

Adding more coins to Pauliwog's $.02
On 7/15/2005 Steve in AZ wrote in from United States  (130.13.nnn.nnn)

Yes! A kindred spirit who likes the ends of his wheels to at least come out to the side of the deck!!

Like Pauli, I prefer a wider deck, and a slightly wider track...especially running a true center-set wheel like a Grippin. I had no problem getting around the cones at the HR TS with 110-113mm wide trucks and trimmed Avalons. My GS ride was similar, with 137 Seismic F/TTC rear. I have yet to set up a ride with the Seismic rear, but I'm in the process of putting together two boards with identical set-ups, but using the Seismic in either F or R applications. Should be interesting.

More 2 Cents on trucks
On 7/14/2005 Paul Howard wrote in from United States  (64.5.nnn.nnn)

Hey, I've been using the MMW and AP 8mm 107mm RT-X's in front and Splitfires in back since they have been available and still love them on hybrid and T/S courses. The only time I use them on G/S is with a wider wheel like an Avalon or Manx (when I use Grippins I use an 8mm 127mm RT-X in front and MMW 8mm 130 Seismic in back on big courses). Anyhow, reliably when ever I've raced T/S in the past year on a fast course, I had to TIGHTEN my RT-X in front as well as my Splitfire because a pos wedged RT-X turns pretty dang sharp. I do own a Radikal front, it is a good truck with a good feel but my cerebellum really likes the RT-X a lot with the SplitFire. Even with Avalons, I can generally do 4' and 4.5' center to center with a 19"wb, not super fast mind you, but it's very do-able. Narrow trucks just don't work for me in T/S as well as something that's 100mm to 107mm contrary to everyone else, but I prefer a 9" wide deck also(if the deck is narrower, I don't get as much leverage to turn, the turn rate is slower, and it just does'nt work for me), but that could just be me. At Hood this weekend I qualified and finished 8th in the A Division and actually used Grippins in the end with extenders on my front and back bringing my hanger width to about 117mm(?). To see what I ride, check out my sponsor's website at : www.subsonicskateboards.com and click on the "future" icon and scroll down until you see the deck with the diagonal carbon stringers (The kicktail model is Scott's idea he added to my original shape, not mine, that's my disclaimer, but it's a fun cruiser with the tail I have to say). Someday I'll probably get a DS 107 for the front. Thanks Wax and Gary- Paul

trucks
On 7/7/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (63.165.nnn.nnn)

'Mike, you said you've ridden both Tracker Offsets and the Split....do you see a big difference between them?....and do you use them for different courses?'

Differences...well, honestly, not really. I do know that the Splitfire is a very sturdy feeling truck. I don't ride it for anything other than GS because it's so wide that I couldn't make the it work for me in TS/HS. I might try it in those other two disciplines, but so far it's only GS for me. It sticks...and it's bullet proof. It reminds me of the TTC's I used to ride back when I was first riding for Turner and Howard was producing the Turner trucks.

SPLITFIRE?
On 7/7/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (63.165.nnn.nnn)

"why the Splitfire & not a Radikal?"

I tried to ride the Radikal rear and couldn't detune it enough to make it feel good to me. I felt that the Radikal turned too much for my liking. I find the Splitfire easier to detune...to the point where the truck doesn't turn hardly at all. For me, I steer off my rear foot on toeside turns so a truck that turns less works better for me since the extra turn of the Radikal makes the back end of my board feel like it wants to come around on me.

make sense?

DS vs. splitfire
On 7/7/2005 Chris B wrote in from United States  (204.78.nnn.nnn)

Thanks Joe and Wax. That makes sense. (and yeah, i read the generic thing wrong, that's the bad thing about reading things on the internet.)
I can see the DS advantage in a TS situation. But in other cases, where that back truck is really cranked down, i have to imagine their very similar. The reverse pivot isnt a factor now since turning is limited. And the axle placement over the kingpin is about the same. I compared it to a TTC and an Indy offset and the axle location is about the same for all of them, so i'm guessing that's the optimal spot. I can see the advantage of a split axle over an offset in that it's more rigid with a far less chance of breakage.

Of course i'm still pretty new to all this so that's allot of guesswork

Mike, you said you've ridden both Tracker Offsets and the Split....do you see a big difference between them?....and do you use them for different courses?

SplitFires...
On 7/6/2005 WAX wrote in from United States  (24.9.nnn.nnn)

WRONG CHRIS...the key word here is progression

What I am saying is the Tracker Baseplate SplitFire is no longer in production..It performs well, Gary won the Slalom World Championship on one (the discipline, not the overall)..The SplitFire DragonSlayer (which you have) is the all around truck that we are producing at this time....WE LIKE IT BETTER AND THEY ARE SELLING WELL
If the demand for the tracker plate hangar is there(looks like it is, as I have gotten several e-mails this evening), it may come back, but we are liking the DS107 and DS90 as an all around far more (try it, you may like it)...
The Generic comment was meant to be funny, as you know a certain individual likes to call it that, even though the SplitFire was a step above the others...
we will just have to see what the market demands, but all the people who have contacted me about using their DS as a rear truck have loved them....If you come to Brek you can even try mine....

So Wax...if i'm reading this right...you're saying that the trucks that you argued were the best in the business a year ago arent all that good afterall... they're "generic" and that you may make a few as extra stock to get rid of your surplus baseplates??

sh*t

That makes me feel real good about buying one from you when they first came out...

Maybe i should have bought something else after all...

Of course...there's always the little fact that Maysey did win that ring with a splitfire rear .... looks like it held down pretty good for him....

Re: SplitFires
On 7/6/2005 WAX wrote in from United States  (24.9.nnn.nnn)

To answer Stevies question....NO MORE "generic Airflow/splitfire/ttc clones"...we have been running the slayers on the backs of boards for a while now...seem to have better traction, turn great or trail great (depends on the baseplate and wedging) and Gary and Eric Moore have both done well on them at races...I believe Lynn Kramer is also riding the rear as well as some east coasters. we did some side by side same board/same wheels/same hill testing and found them superior so we shelved the 1st gen splitfire rears for now...Someday we may resurect them, just to help Fluitt purge his oversupply of Tracker baseplates...

Thanks,

But the pragmatic side of me wants to know, why the Splitfire & not a Radikal? What does Gary's truck do for you on GS that Mark's doesn't? I am fresh back into slalom after MANY years and hands down, trucks have to be the most improved upon & confusing element.

As I get better I look to offset's as the next step from a Tracker X,S combo. But I like Gary's truck, then there's Rads, Chicken Indy Offsets, etc, etc, etc. So why the Split in GS?

PumpStation SetUp
On 7/6/2005 mike maysey wrote in from United States  (63.165.nnn.nnn)

"Could you do us wannabees a favor and give us a breakdown on what you ran at pumpststion and why? I learn more here than any BS ads I could read. BTW is that a Radikal rear or a Splitfire? I know, I just showed what I don't know."

I ran my fastest times of the day on the Skaterbuilt GS Proto with 22.5 inner hole measurement, Avalon 80a at all four corners, Radikal front, Splitfire rear and Pleasure Tool Ceramic bearings. I did start the day on a different board...one that was shorter, had Manx 80a around on it, with a Radikal and Tracker Mid-Offset...trouble with it was, I couldn't get enough drive out of it in the large offsets in the middle of the course. I was forced to stuff a GS board through a very challenging section of cones so that I could carry more speed in the middle of the course. It took me about 4 runs to realize I was totally off the podium and needed to rethink my set up. That's when I went back to the winningest GS board in Southern California this summer. : )

Why did I run the setup I ended up on, easy...I've refined that GS setup for the last 5 months or so...it just works right now and I don't plan to make any further mods to it other than maybe changing wheels based on surface or maybe adjusting truck tension for tighter courses or in the case of the course Sunday, it had a crazy set of cones close to the start line that didn't allow me to push into the course like I really wanted to, but it was very challenging.
