Arab, I'd represent Cali to the fullest for the Championship Title. This doesn't mean battle lines have been drawn I simply know where I'm from.

camber concave.....

i think im going to answer my own question......
I had a deck about half a year ago that was just cambered and it was NICE to carve on a realy smooth solid flex .
I have spent the last few months working on putting concave on the same deck and after a few stuff ups i made a deck that was STIFF with 9ply of gaboon ( the only hard wood i can get in NZ) Not a bad ride but it wouldnt under horozontal.
Then i cut it back to 6ply and added a layer of double bias glass to top and bottom with the grains running 45 off center. Its LIGHT 2.5kg WITH R2 and 72mm wheels and all the other bits and bobs. I took it for its first ride today (dont you hate it when you get new clear grip all nasty....) and if i had to sum it up in a word i would say MUDDY. Im not sure if it was the lack of plys or the fact that when you compress the deck its fighting against it self in every direction rather than just one that made if feel a tad bit dirty and confused underfoot.
Has any body else felt the same or sould i keep trying at it and see if it was just that the deck is too thin?
thanks Jestah

Chicken, Richy and I all have concave/cambered Pocket Pistol boards.
Mike-there has been mention of a east meets west championship title, would you represent the west in this?

Welcome Jestah, No worries dude, this is as good a place as any to ask away. Personally, I've never ridden a board with concave and camber. I do know that some of the top slalom pros have camber and concave boards they ride. Some simply modify their boards with little add ons. ie.)Gary Cross has little wooden wedges stuck to the deck of his Comet under his grip tape, Steve Evans builds little foam edges and sands them down to make concave on his ICKs...other than those guys, I can't really recall anyone using camber with concave. Anyone else help with this one?

Hi
I spend most of my time in the home made boards post but would love some feed back from ppl about decks and what they like in a deck.
At the moment I'm working on a 1.15m pintail that has both concave and camber. Im still undecided if its worth truing to press decks with this setup.
What are your opinions/experiences with decks like this compared to decks with a single curve.
Thanks Jestah
Ps i know I'm pushing it a bit to put this here but i want some advice from ppl who have skated in comps.

This forum isn't Coast-icated...it's Slalom-icated. I'm a Californian...born and raised...and I don't give a ---- whos from where : ) It's almost time to race and that makes me happy. It's almost time to see the slalom gang for our racing get togethers and that makes me happy.

Can I get these "Avilas" at the fireworks stand? under the giant sombrero? are they a type of sausage? is this related to the "linguica" thread that was raging over in "trucks" a while back?
On an actual related note, Avila was on the doorstep last night, and I let him in. I think on a course with fairly consistant speed, anything that flows, they'll be unstoppable. The uberwheels of the apocolypse.

Chef Maysey, You know how I type when I'm multi tasking...I'm always trying to do too many things at once.
I pumped around on a Hybrid X/l with Avila's last night....when they start rollin' nothin' is gonna' stop 'em....fast as hell.

I once rode a salami board . . . You never "sausage" performance!
(At least that's what Pedro says!) (No, I don't expect any of the West Coast guys to get it.)

Round Avila's are on their way to you. The production batch was allowed to cool long enough, so everything came out fine.

Arm Movement

Don't worry too much about your arm movement. I did't really concentrate on mine until I got to a point in my skating where I knew I was missing something. It sort of happened on it's own though. I just started to 'feel' where my arms should go and they went there. I do balance and counter balance with my arms to varying degrees. In other words, I move my arms differently based on the course I'm skating. Big offsets require stretches and swings of the arms. Straight cones require a tighter arm swing. If you watch the World Champ DVD, my arms do way different stuff on Saturday than they do on Sunday.

Miko, Right on...sounds like you had a good time. We ended up skipping the Presidio and going to GGP at about 11am. We had quite a crew. Avila's...I have some but they aren't round. Don't have any time on them. I'm waiting for an event when we might need them. Hopefully La Costa or if I can afford it...The Bear.

Hi Mike...
This ties in with the turning technique discussion below...
I was going to try and make it up for some Presidio action with you and Gary today, but ended up taking care of domestic stuff. Later that afternoon I drove over to our secret 'E' spot where we were tossed out last week, and had a nice two hour session to myself, setting a super fast tight course right down the fall line, then a hybrid-gs that was pretty fun as well. Rather than using my longer ICK I stayed on my short wheelbase setup.
I've been having trouble using my shorter wheelbase setup, so I decided to spend the entire session using my ICK Mini-Carrera with the wheelbase that's closer to what you and Gary use. I'm determined to get better on that board... (As well as thinking it might be a better choice for the Shoreline race next weekend as well... gotta be ready!)
I found myself moving my stance more together, and to a more forward, closer-to-parallel position. Strangely enough I found myself doing the heelside 'stomp' you were just describing (backing it up with my arms), and 'down' pumping as I've heard Gilmour call it... but the most interesting thing was that I ended up with a completely modified toeside turn.
On my longer length ICK Carrera I feel more like my rear foot is behind, and I'm leading with the front foot... but with the mini I felt right on top of my rear foot even when crouched and projecting well forward, and really turning quite differently than usual, with fairly good results.
I'm going to experiment with this technique on my longer setup and see if I get any mileage out it there... Very interesting.
Oh yeah... did you go downhilling? How were the Avillas?
See you guys at Shoreline next sunday!!!!

I've had people tell me when I skate slalom it looks like I'm using my arms to 'pull' myself along. I certainly use different movements for GS and TS. I have spent lots of time concentrating on swinging my arms only as much as I need. To fully answer this one, I'm going to wait until I skate today and come back later and tell you all.
