I'd run an OutLaw...insurance is for official, points type races.

As for Insurance- One company that in the past has granted policies for athletic type programs (And also insured Inline Skating instructors for the International Inline Skating Association I.I.S.A.) may still be doing it. Contact director@iisa.org and ask them who is their current insurer. Also The Boy Scouts of America have a good policy for specialty events- as long as the boy scouts are involved. You can also try them- Please post your findings.

concave and camber

I have a custom Pumpkin that has Camber and Concave. It`s 32" long with 29" wheelbase measured at the axles. The camber is 1.25" with concave at .75". This board has a stiff flex for mt weight (158#) and sooper staaable. More of a resilient ride the snap like my Roe Hester.
I would say that this type of design is best suited for long drawn out courses where the comcave gives added steering on big offsets.

Thanks for all the feed back!
The deck is thin (about 7mm) and TOO flexy for anthing else other than deep carving and slow hills.
Its starting to grow on me. I had just come off a deck thats TINY ( i cut one of my snapped decks in half.... and it had way to much camber 3/4'' from rail to center but i could pump on it and it was realy nice carving ..... its deep concave made the rail to rail feeling real solid and fast. )
So In conclusion ..... i wouldnt say they are bad or good but rather they suit some ppl style and needs. I like now but im going to stay openminded about going back to just camber.
thanks once again
Ride safe have fun Jestah
Ps I fully recomend making your own deck. Its realy amazing going for a ride on someing you have crafted. There is so much info out there that ranges from making a deck in a cave with a stone axe to using the same stuff as they put on the space shuttle ......

Pat-If I might chime in and give some assistance, Try and contact Don Oshei of FCR, he found an Insurance Broker that has a blanket liability policy to cover events like yours, If I remember correctly, its about $200.00 per event.
Good Luck

Putting on a slalom race -- permission, insurance, outlaw?

Mike,
I'm sure you have been to many slalom races. My experience is from '77 and '78 in Colorado (ARA races). We have been practicing and a group of us here in Portland OR are going to put on 3 races. My question is in regards to what it takes to put on a local race. Are you familiar with how race organizers convince site owners to allow a skateboard race to happen? I found a number of sites that will let us hold a race, but only if I can secure $1M (yes, million dollars) of insurance.
I'm just curious how other race organizers have overcome this obstacle? And if not, then what is the impact of holding an "outlaw" race -- i.e. one without the site owners permission, without insurance.
As a racer, would you be willing to attend "outlaw" races if you knew there was a chance of getting kicked off of the site? Or perhaps for some, this risk is part of the allure of an outlaw race...?
So WWMD (What would Maysey Do?) Run the race outlaw, or come up with $1M insurance?

Camber AND Concave

I had one of the original Comet Street Slalom 33" decks, and it was pretty wildly cambered, looking like a cobra ready to strike... as well as having a fairly decent concave. It was my very first board in my re-entry to riding, and I rode it all the time... people thought I was pretty fast on it at GGP and elsewhere, but when I got my Comet O'Shei, then later my ICK Carrera, there was no going back. I had to sell it.
The ICK approach to concave is to add flared up wheel wells front and rear. The design seems tuned so that the flares don't seem to inhibit the cambers upward-downward motion. So of course I'm going to go ahead and gush about how it seems to be the best of all possible worlds design-wise. Ok... so I'm biased!
SAS!!!! See ya all sunday... pray for no rain!

Almost forgot ...
Concave will add to torsional rigidity (tubular strength, etc.).
But, concave will affect flex characteristics as it will counter up/down motion. Too many opposing forces in the material.

Camber = better snap and board memory, but can add to unweighting instability.
Concave = firm foot placement with less sideways slip, more turning crank and more wheel clearance.

I have a few of these decks. Nice pop from the camber as always with nice edge-to-edge feel from toe to heel. They do call for more precise foot placement when foot braking though as it is easy to turn while braking and have the board drift away from you or turn inward on you compared to a flat deck.

who says 'cali'?

mike, anybody who sees you skate or surf would know you for a californian for sure, but I never actually met a californian who says 'cali'. that is a word that so far I have only ever seen non-californians use and it even makes my conquerer (opposite of native) self cringe a bit when I hear it.
What is the slalom pro native californian's take on the use of the dreaded 'cali' word?
I noticed the concave-inducing wedges on jonathans deck at GGP and wanted to jump on it and see how it felt. seems like a good idea but maybe not good if you press on the side of your board a lot like I have seen you do. maybe the wedges should only be on the front foot?
I hope it clears on sunday. my goal is to beat somebody.

Jestah, Sounds to me like you went too thin. I'm no board manufacturer, so maybe I'm full of crap. How is the torsion on it? Maybe you can stiffen it up with some Carbon. Do you have access to glass that has carbon woven into it? Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding you too! I gotta get to work. Late.

So tell us Arab--what is the advantage to having camber and concave? Is it better for one type of slalom over another? Does it change the flex pattern of your boards?
