Foot is the same. I was doing walking motions yesterday at therapy without applying any weight. Then we went to a carnival and I was up on the crutches for an hour and it really swelled up bad. The therapist laughed when I told her we want to go surfing in Costa Rica this February. She has known me for 3 years and said even I would not be ready by then. She predicts that the foot pain will be pretty debilitating the first 18 months. I told her she was wrong, but she may be right. Time will tell. I am moving it a lot more and working on flexibility. My toes are all bright red like a newborn baby. They are all freaky-sensitive to hot and cold and are going haywire. The foot hurts a lot know that I am moving it around. Not a lot, but some.
Jessie made it to Aspen around 3 pm on Monday and headed strait up to the cabin without success. Her car could not handle the dirt road up to the cabin. She was within a 1/2 mile, but its too steep to climb with any cargo. So she stayed with my friend Kim and showered up. They rented a 4 x 4 yesterday morning and spent the day up at the cabin and cruised town last night. I told her the huge house that she passed up on the dirt road was Melanie Griffith and Antonio Bandaras' house. So this morning she knocked on their door looking for directions to the grocery store. 10 miles up in the mountains and Jessie is asking for directions to the grocery store. She said she saw M.G. but not Antonio. They saw a brown bear while pulling out of the Melanie's driveway.
Today they went white water rafting, and tomorrow they are going horseback riding. She said she is having the best time of her life and says she is coming back next summer to live rent-free in the cabin, which I told her she could months ago. The journey is unfolding just like it should have and she will never forget this one. I guess you could sing "She was born in the summer of her 25th year, coming home to place she'd never been before... Rockie mountain High".
I am sure that Jessie will spend a year or two in the Colorado Rockies. Its the place to be for a hippy dippy, hip/hop, freaky mama like her. Plus, she's got a great bunch of people from my mountain family and the slalom crew. Its on !!!
Jess, get your ass back her by 8:30 am August 20th !!! Ryder misses you.

We made it into boulder last night and got to The Mitchell's house. Went out to dinner with Pappas, Jason, Terri. Good times so far. On our way to Aspen this afternoon.
Cat, my mom made me a "bear scarer" can with pennies in it.

Its about 10 am now and in twelve hours I will be leaving for Aspen. We have candles, batteries, skateboards, and sleeping bags shoved into my beloved "Yakima". I can't believe I am about to spend the week in the woods. I really can't believe my blackberry totting friend Amanda is going. Ha!
I am extremely grateful for the outpouring of support I have going along with me on this "journey" (as Fadell says). I am so happy to be a part of the buckeye team family here. James is at Woodward being a counselor before going to college, Ethan just moved into a new house with his family (and his dad will be home soon), Emilie is going to Portland to close up her life there and commit to being a buckeye, and now I am leaving for an awesome trip out west.
I'm not sure Kenny will ever realize just how important he is to us and the bond us "kids" have created together because of him. We love him and are grateful for all he has done for us everyday.
Thanks to you K Moll, and EVERYONE else that has thrown down for a beautiful summer. It's what life is all about.
p.s. because some dumb ass hit my car while parked in front of my house, I now have an extra $575 to take on my trip! nice.

You guys brought tears to Jessie's eyes when she heard about the "Do it for Jessie day".
You guys and gals raised up $125 dollars which is like a million dollars when you consider where its getting her. She is going with another girl and guy and they are so stoked for the adventure !!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure Jessie will get around to posting but right now she is running around mad. Her car got hit last night while parked on the street and she is at the body shop. Second time someone hit her this summer !!!
Nothing like a 3,000 mile road trip to blow out the cobwebs. Good luck and have fun Jess !!!

Kenny,
I'm pitching in not so Jess can buy beer. I'm pitching in so she can buy a firearm or a very big knife.
Don't send her off into the wilderness without one or the other. Take it from someone who knows, and who's been there/done that.

As many of you know, Jessie, our Nanny did much of the "behind the scenes" work at the Buckeye Open. She was eager to help, even before "the incident". Jessie has been with Ryder 40 hours a week since January and has been a great friend, worker, teacher, and helper the past 7 months.
She has a vacation coming up tomorrow and is driving out to Colorado for a week and will be staying at our cabin in Aspen. Rustic, no running water, no electricity, plumbing, etc.
She is stoked, but broked. I am giving her $500 for gas and food, but she and her traveling companion will be scratching hard for food, beer, etc.
I propose a "Do it for Jessie Paypal Party". Today is the 12th anniversary of Jerry's death, and in the name of the Great American Road trip I am asking for small donations for Jessie's trip. $5.00. $10.00 or just a dollar. If you came to the Buckeye and were stoked, think of it as a tip for your unpaid hostess.
The cabin, which people who live 7 miles away in town describe as "Heaven". This was the winter of 1996 when I lived there solo for 3 months.
This is going to be a great trip for Jessie, and I bet she will move back to Aspen next summer and live in the cabin !!!!! Lets make sure she has some pocket change. Please. She would do it for you in a second. And she doesnt know that I am doing this. Our little secret.
Shhhhh. Send paypal to Kennym1@sbcglobal.net
Thank in advance.

So many great memories at Alpine Valley.. The 1985 shows for me. The Deads 20th Anniv. tour. Riding my Rocco freestyle board thru the traffic into Apline Valley selling my extra tickets, making a few "miracles" for a couple of people. Staying at the local hotel in town and riding the elevator up to my room when Bobby Weir gets in the elevator with me. Sharing the ride in the elevator unable to complete a coherant sentence with Mr. Weir. Finding out Bobby is staying next door to my room. Meeting Brent Myland the next day in the lobby. Those were great times!!

Alpine Valley, Wisconsin 8-7-82. We all grew up a little that weekend. It was off the hook and when I read reviews of this show and the next night, it seems pretty understood that these were special times that would not last.
It felt so bittersweet and heartfelt. A few of my friends in this photo emailed me today to "remind" me of the 25th anniversary of this show. I am glad they remembered it. I was exactly Ethan's age in this shot. Leading into my Senior year of high school. Living the dream and doing my best not to think about the future. I knew at the time that it was special and tried hard to remember every detail. This night is burned on me like a tattoo.
We thought we were so lucky to ever see the Dead and thought Jerry could die any day. We got another 13 years out of him, and it was one of the most beautiful parts of my life, pre-Ryder.
Thanks Jerry. Miss you everyday.

Champ,
Don't listen to these people. You are broken down and should hang it up forever. In fact, you should retire TODAY and become a traveling MC on the slalom circuit.
So please.... drive Ethan out to ColoRADo and be our MC. Our little Cow Town will never be the same...

I'm feeling a whole lot better than Jake Brown. Man, I cringe everytime I think about it. If slalom had big crashes like that, we'd be in the X Games also!
Kenny--- I used to skate mountain passes at night on my Bahne, no pads, no helmet--- just ski gloves.
Keep your spirits up & keep telling the doctors that they are wrong.... you WILL be back, with a vengeance!

Kenny,
Did you notice how JB's shoes exploded off him when he hit the bottom. See if you skate barefoot, you never have that problem.
Glad you are out of the hospital. Bet the nurses are too.

I have been reading horror stories on the interweb about the heel injury. Most people have told me "its the end", "you will never recover from that one", etc.
My back problem was the worst I have ever had. This one has not freaked me, but it doest everyone else. I think they are wrong. The range of motion is real, unless you have two Rolfers cranking on it at once and thats what I plan on doing. I will stretch that bitch back loose. Its my mission. I told the doc that I was going surfing in COsta Rica in February. He said "you are allowed if your able". I will be able.
Here is a shot of me right after my back injury. It hurt from April 2004 to May 2005. It brought many frustrating tears to my eyes. Not wearing shoes and showing off is like crack to me. I always do it more right after a serious injury as to say "I am back". I promise I am done with that line of thinking.
I don't regret skating barefoot for the past 30 years, but I do regret doing it in the dark.
have a great weekend.
