When I watch a skater going before me I can spot whether he's nudged a cone by a hair or so, just as when I'm running a course I can tell if a cones been misplaced. At a Swiss race they marked dots UNDER the cones which could lead to creaping cones, so I marked circles around the cones, which seemed sensible. What I cant do is watch each run to see if a cones been nudged, I dont think we should expect a racer to be responsible for 'his' cones before he races. I reckon that the cones 'should' be placed in the right place, but if a racer notices a cone is out then they should pull out the course immediately. But I cant work out what to do if a racer hits the cone, that removes the evidence of a misplaced cone. Any ideas? How about a buddy system? Each racer is assigned his opposite number in the draw as a buddy. They should check the cones for their buddy. If the buddy can't be bothered then the racer can sort it out between themselves... This might make for some great pairings, as the top racer will be looking out for the lowest qualifyer. If the assigned buddy is indisposed (buying an ice cream or something) then the racer should sub a new buddy.
Another rule I'd like to introduce is that Edwin Brockman should be forced to race switch.

insurance is a bitch, its the main reason i'm very hesitant to arrange any more events down this way as i don't want to be liable if someone gets hurt and decides to sue. but if anyone knows the correct legal view on this (i.e. the responsibility and liability of an organisor - no matter how small or informal the event) i'd like to know.
i think you could poss get the fee paid (or part paid) by sponsorship, 3 spnsors at 500quid, or 5 at 300quid etc. you got some press coverage last year, including Tv, thats pretty appealing if you present it correctly. and as ever with sponsorship tell em what you'll give them (event title, championship title, logos on posters, banners at events, links on website etc), not what you want from them.
i also think you need to swell ukssa membership by slashing the membership fee, better to have 50 members at a tenner each than 20 at 25... but i've banged that old drum before.

In ski racing, we were allowed to sideslip down a course in order to learn the best line, but faced DQ even if we chose to ski through it at a slow pace in order to review the route. This meant that reading a course became most important. I feel exhausted reading the rules to Snap and so never did terribly well. Bridge therefore, for me, is an indeterminable, untouchable bitch.
It was also an unofficial rule that the tighter (and therefore shorter) line you took would mean that the fastest route had been taken. We'd try to take out every gate. In skating, if one hits a cone (or gate) it's regarded as criddling, therefore warranting a time penalty rather than a slap on the back for tight and rapid behaviour. The difference between ski-ing and skating is that in the former sport, the rapid-gates are spring-mounted and therefore typically reset themselves, whereas cones prefer, once hit, to ping into the nearest turd-ridden locality. If I choose a tight, yet clean, line whilst skating then no cones should have been disturbed. In skating, therefore, it should be the ultimate responsibility of the competitor to replace the cones that he has displaced rather than that of the following racer.
From the top of a course all cones appear to be in place. If you've just laid waste to the course then you know differently.

As you might expect, Chris that first rule is a lame one in my opinion. The racers can't check the whole course each time. I have had plenty of races where the cones were out. And I'm not going to walk the course each time. Or I might, but that would annoy people.

If any of you guys from the UK want to come to Simi Valley CA. usa. You can see the biggest skateboard museum in the world. You can also skate one of the best indoor parks. Also we are ten miles from LA. Great parks and skating history in area. Carp fishing as well. I work at restuarant at night, so during the day I could be your skate guide. I skate, my 2 kids skate, so I know all the spots. I am offering this service to you because I love skating, and evey time I have been to the UK people have been very kind to me. Also, I live in the USA, but that does not mean I agree with the government here. Keep that in mind. If interested E-mail me at www.camick63@aol.com. Affordable hotels in area. Also check out Skatelabs website.
ps. 18 pound grass carp last week. Sweet corn.

Wehave around 600 in the bank. The insurance totals about all we collected last year. If we do not have insurance then we could all be sued if someone gets injured. It also means that the places where we can compete will be limited as they all require some insurance. It really is a problem if we do not have insurance, but can we afford to. Really it comes down to how much do we want to do and if we do it properly.
Places where we do need insurance
Crystal Palace hayle
Last year
Bude had their own, cost 400 for the day Brands under their cover (as long as we do not claim - if we do it is all over there) Epic had their own insurance
If we want more or new venues no insurance could be limited. Personaly I am a little worried about the legal side, I am sure Mike will straighten us all out here.

Chris,
Have you got that much in the UKSSA kitty? Seems a lot of money.
Is there any advantage to having this insurance (does it open up new venue possibilities?), and what's the exposure if we don't have it? I presume we didn't have it this year.
I guess if we take the insurance we will need to increase membership fees and/or competition fees.
Graham.

Are there any slalomers in Aus. We need to win again against our criminal friends. Slalom may be our only other chance, even though I did not make it to the party. Big it up for Ex Pats who know where to be when it is cold and wet.
Has there ever been a wetter weekend than the last one?
Chris
NEW RULES for 2004
It is the responsibility of the racer to check the course to ensure that all cones are in place. Once the race has started there is no redress if the course is set wrong. Short course events can reduce the cone penalty to 0.1 sec. where the course is less than 10 seconds in length. If a competitor hits a cone and it displaces a cone or cones on their competitors lane the competitor is not penalised. If a cone is displaced and hits another cone in front of the racer then there is still a penalty. If the cone displaces one behind the racer then there is no penalty. If a cone remains attached to the skateboard and hits other cones then these count as a normal penalty. If you do not agree with these then mail UKSSA

Ed I can not make the 6th as it is Chloe's birthday, and although she enjoyed her visit to Epic she would rather have a party with her friends. If you know a way around this that does not involve a divorce I will reconsider.
Does this mean I'm a light-weight?

Annual UKSSA P**S up We have been in London for the last two years, how about Brighton this year. I sugest either 20 or 21st. Skate during the day, I am sure Levene can find a spot, and head for the pub early whenit gets dark, maybe around the Level. Brighton has excellent train links fron Victoria and I think run alll night, but check that, so you can go clubbing in Brighton.
Let me know what you think?

I've just had a message from Pierre Samray to say that the Antibes Euro Championships DVD is 35 minutes long, includes both slalom and downhill and will be released after a presentation in Antibes on the 4th of December. The cost of the DVD is 15 euros and can be obtained directly through Pierre at Antibes Longskate (I have the contact details available, just click on my name and ask).
More importantly, he sent me this instruction: 'say hello to the english team (Chris, Paul, Simon, Martin, Mickael, Jonyx and so on...)' Done.
