Damn Michael, I didn't think computers worked at so early an hour. I'll be down in HP around 5:30. After Ed's stunning performance at Epic where he took a large bag of 'just enough' and casually reached in every so often, I reckon to be needing as much time on the hard black stuff as possible whilst the light lasts.

Morro Bay - Epic Results

Hi to all in the UK - heres an update from me.
Well done to Edwin at Epic, wish I could have made it. Like Simon, I couldn't face the drive up to Birmingham after going straight to 10 hour work days after arriving back to London Heathrow on Wednesday. Likewise the 2 hour drive to travel 10 miles in London Traffic to Hyde park on Thursday was too much. Well done to Mike at Morro in the tight slalom!
I was at Morro too, racing Pro this year! I was on a high after good results in the Euros at Antibes, France. (4th 4th 5th)
But no glory for me this year in California. Last year I got a 1st, 3rd and won the overall in the Open class. This year I’m looking at a 9th place against the Pro field! Still it was a fantastic experience to see events unfold first hand.
I wish we had more non-US skaters there. Martin Drayton and all the London/Euro skaters were missed. No Jani, Maurus Stroble or Chris Hart either.
I got to LAX after a long flight, somehow missed meeting Floyd and Chris Charalabous who were there to meet me. Finally got thru to Floyd's cell phone after I was at a motel. I slept on Floyds couch. The next day we left late after picking up a big V8 US saloon rental, leather and fully loaded. I Drove 4.5 hours straight to San Luis Obispo at nightfall, and we Missed any practice. Thanks to Howard for putting us up, even though he wasn't expecting Floyd and Chris to be with me. We got a motel the next 2 nights.
And thanks to 3DM for supplying me with new wheels, Fibreflex for the Boards and Etnies for the shoes.
Friday was the slalom cross, raced Brent Kosic, a close race. Then I had to race Luca! I was ahead of him for the first half of the course, but one course was faster than the other on the final right hand bend. Because the fastest qualifier had lane choice (Tay Hunt - brilliant Result mate!) every race, it was hard to beat the person in this course. Luca took me. It was fun on the big hill though and a new racing experience, a lot more like snowboarding. A lot of the down hillers did really well in the open class.
Next day was a hybrid slalom. I felt my pump was not working. I got a Lousy qualifying time of 7th. Then Mike pointed out my trucks were broken. The allen screws holding my offset hanger on were loose and the whole axle Was flapping up and down. As soon as I tightened it down I was able to Pump and accelerate. First I raced Duane Peters. I reckon DP is a living Legend and is a great vert rider. I think he has a great attitude and raced hard. The last time I saw him was at the US Bombs gig in the Underworld in Camden. I was on it and moved to the next round. Then I had to race against Dong. Again! I seem to be drawn against him every race. In Europe too! On the first start I blew the gate by pulling too hard too early and smashing my ribs into the barrier and that left me too much to make up on the second run even though I felt fast and was accelerating. I could have been a contender.
On the Sunday was the tight. I was looking forward to it. Looking at my board compared to everyone elses my trucks were way too wide and I was clipping cones. I also was using a board I hadn't ridden all year. Mistake. Then again the odd Thursday night at Hyde Park is hardly the training of champions. I got a draw against Luca after Hollien. An instant psychological sledge hammer if there is such a thing. I hit 6 cones - game over. Slalom is getting more technical and equipment testing and tuning will be paramount as races get faster. I hate messing with equipment. I just want to ride! Can't we have a division like formula Ford where we all ride the same board- so its the skill of the rider that's important! Just a whinge.
Also some advice to you new racers; try to enter as many contests as possible, because you learn something from each contest.
At Morro I learnt that racing on the wrong board for the course, jetlagged, on 4 hours sleep, hung over, hungry and thirsty are not ideal. Make note to self.
On the plus side I had a load of laughs with Chris Charalabous and Floyd, and we were in the bars till closing time every night. It was great to have a road trip and travel adventure. And I haven't been called by my old nickname "Scabie" for years. The name came from my fall at 50mph at Brands hatch with no pads. I also seem to remember wrecking the table in Ed Economy's hotel room at some point. Still, if you're going to smash up a hotel room, best its some body elses. There’s a lot more to say but I'll leave that for when I see you later!
If you have read this far you deserve an invite to my Birthday Bash - I'm 40 on Saturday 11 October, beating Clingfilm by a full week. If you can, make it to the Zoo Bar - Bear St - Leicester Square, London, Earth between 9 and 10pm on Saturday 11 October 2003. Mention my name on the door and get in for free – the club is open till 3.30am. I'll be in a pub nearby prior and will have my mobile phone with me 07946012353. Nuff said. Wicked. Later. Ciao. Respect. Boomshanka.

We did not really get round to an AGM. Partly due to the noise of EPIC, partly the few people but mainly the lack of any suggestions or willingness for others than mentioned prior taking roles. So the options are as follows: Keep eveything the same where I dictate what happens have another AGM to elect people, as last year in London To go with the list posted before for roles
At present I feel it correct to keep fees the same, but I can not run the whole thing again next year. We need someone for each event, people to take part in setting up etc, getting money and publicity. We have around £600 in the bank, although Brands have not asked for anything yet, which give a good cushion. We did not have a single event rained off this year, so this leaves a contingency fund. We have an income around £1300.
I suggest purchases, in order of priority: 1 - generator 2 - start ramps, may have news soon on that 3 - starting system 4 - display equipment and better timing
We will need more switches next year.
Let me know
Chris

Fantastic Edwin! And you took out the World Champion to do it!
Stridely raced like like a man at Morro. After practice Sat and Sunday, the open class favorites were muttering "I hope I don't have to race Stride...He's looking damn fast" Then he qualifies in the tight on Sunday faster than most of the pros. Amazing. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
That makes it two in a row for UK in the open class. Price in 2002, Stride in 2003. Who is the next Brit to carry the torch...Edwin?

Thanks Si. You would have been proud of me. I had to make up .27 and didnt give up like usual. No cones out of place, they did a great job of double checking before the final runs for everyone, which was nice. Bude, Hayle and Brands were all great training. Congrats on being UK series winner, what did you win? I have the Donkey Fag holder for you:
PP Smokestacks were 1,2,3 for the second offset at Epic.
Please make your next model 3" longer on the nose so I can beat Ed until he gets a new one!

Sounds like Epic was a gas! Sorry that I didn't make it but I couldn't face the drive up.
Thanks Chris, for all your efforts with the UKSSA this season. Much appreciated. Is the winner's cheque in the post?
BIG UP to Michael Stride on your win in the TS at Morro Bay. Great racing! It's all in the mind. Well done! Were there any cones out of place during your runs?
Glad to see that the PP Smokestack is proving popular. I'll be changing the shape pretty soon.

Yes, you're right Ed, what a fantastic day at Epic. Big up to you Ed! You were tanking! Nice to see you all again, nice to see Ali again and a few new slalomers, so refreshing. Ali's still got it!
Thank you Chris for your efforts in organising the UKSSA and Michael too. Without you both none of this would happen.
I was happy with my 3rd place at Epic (yes Smokestack PPS certainly works for me and other skaters). Belated Happy Birthday Jim. Hope you had a good day. Anyway, looking forward to Chris' party and going out with a bang! Take care y'all, Leon.

Michael, sorry to hear those TV retards credited you as me (or me as you) in the Bude footage. The incident is made all the more strange by the fact that I wasn't even there (although Kev and Daisy B were). Hmmm. The next time fame taps me on the shoulder, I'll return the favour by telling everybody my name's Mr. Stride.

Still on cloud nine from Saturday night! I rang Jill to tell her I was on my way home and tell her...."Oh by the way I won...." What a response..." Oh yer..". Talk about p***s on my fireworks! Anyway, Micheal, Ali, Leon and everyone else, thank you for pushing me harder than I really wanted to go having not skated since Brands Hatch. My bones are telling me to finish on a high! I couln't believe I nicked it from Micheal on my the last run! It was a real game of cat and mouse between me and Micheal but I've not had so much fun and enjoyed the competition more that on Saturday.
Clingfilm, a big thank you for your encouragement and especially for your running of the UKSSA this past year.
Smokestack, your deck rules....Big up PPS!
Winters here, it's time to hybernate or practise in secret!!
