bauer, you might try asking the guys over at
floridaskater.com for info...west palm has the
Y and alan's place is over there on the east
coast...you may feel it's too far north
for the trip from miami, but if you can
get to Kona skatepark in Jax you should...orlando
has a couple of good parks ( Oviedo and Orlando park )...

I take my 5'4" skiboard to a street park here in oregon. There is nothing like taking a pocket on a longbord with RII 180's. It has a completely differnt feel from shortboarding the trick is finding parks with enough room between transitions and roll in points.

On occasion I'll take my 38 inch pintail to the park near my house, carve the street course and work the transitions. Its is layed out just right, no tricks really but lots of carvin turnin and holdin on to speed that no one on a shorty can acheive. They always ask how it goes so fast. simply put you can pump and work every little bump and pocket. Ohh soo fun.

gravity makes a 52" x 10" board, I got one and cut out wheel wells and I am now using it for a carving board. If you don't mind putting some manual labor into your board you might look into doing this. youcan check out the board at gravityboard.com

Has anyone ridden the concave Comet 45" pintail? I have huge feet, and am concerned it might be too narrow toward the back. Also, if anyone knows of a 45" by 10" (approx) board, I'd be keen to know about it.

because he's ALWAYS helping run the slalom races all day ,
when I usually see him !

Mandy Its the best time to skate if you want to develop your sliding technique. Make sure you have good slider gloves and go for it. As the others said keep your bearings well oiled and wipe your board down afterwards. No probs re trucks.

Hi Guys,
need a little bit of advice if you'd be so kind
I just bought a G&S fiberflex pintail, with randal 180’s and 76mm kryps.
Whats the feeling on a good start point on truck positioning for a big guy like me (240lbs)
I’m told that all the G&S stuff is now the stiff flex so assume that’s the case.
Any advice/experience welcome

Always clean and relube bearings immediately after skating in the rain.
Always wipe down your deck so it's clean and dry, too.

The first time I tried skating in the rain and ruined a good set of bearings. I find that depending on what shape the wheels are I can get away with riding on wet roads a bit providing that I wipe down my bearings right afterwards I also keep them well oiled. Make sure that your bearings have removable shields so you can dry out the balls. Also watch for those turns wet roads remove any sense of traction that you may have had on dry roads, you will slide all over.

I consider longboards for streetsurfing and cruising, but not just that.
You can ride a longboard in a half-pipe, pool, ditch or park bowls provided the length of the wheelbase and the curve of the transitions are a decent match. If the transition is abrupt it's going to be difficult or impossible to make it on a long wheelbase (over 36"). Most park boards have a 15 to 18" wheelbase, measured from the inside baseplate hole of one truck to the inside baseplate hole of the other. The same applies to the subsequent top turns, etc. Many park riders slide their boards to make top turns, or just kickturn which you can do on a longboard. There's just more board to have to throw around. A wide semi-circular half-pipe might be makeable on just about any board, depending on your skill, of course.
It goes without saying that longboards and downhill are meant for each other. Make sure and have the right trucks if you plan on going fast. Some trucks, in particular Randalls, handle the speeds without wobbling but also carve well. Other trucks like Exkates and Seismics carve well but might wobble depending on your skill. Independent trucks carve well but wobble like crazy if you loosen them up enough to carve a longboard.
I find surfing and skating highly complementary. I think the best way to improve is to skate a lot and make sure and try different disciplines. Slalom will greatly improve your ability to carve and make quick corrections. Pool, park and ditch skating will improve your ability to bring your weight back to being centered over your board through a variety of circumstances. I don't skate tricks or big vert so I can't comment on those disciplines but the point is: a wide range of skating experiences can only improve your overall ability.
