slider gloves
On 7/12/2000 brian wrote in from (206.105.nnn.nnn)

for my gloves i used a velcro strap shoe gooed to a piece of UHMW (ultra high moleculear weight---i JUST found out, like, this is totally a big deal for me...hehe) then you can use what ever type gloves you want, even no gloves. the shoe goo is starting to come loose where the velcro is stressed, so i think i might add laces to secure it.

Gravity girls video
On 7/8/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

Got this one for free from a distributer with a order that had some longboard stuff in it. The intro with the gravity guy's in it has some fairly cool, short board like skating in it,kind of progressive, the speed carving stuff is not very memorable(i don't remember it now). Then the girls, some of it is kind of cool ,worth watching, once. Then, we have some little girls, real little.I don't get the point, well i do, but it's scary.I mean watching videos is to be impressed or inspired to skate, grown up women on videos, skating, are interesting,if not for the skating, then," hey she's good looking" but little girls?to watch or even putting out this video is pretty questionable. For all i know these could be the daughters of the Gravity Moms and Dads, but putting your little daughter in a video to distribute to strangers some stranger than others, what are they thinking?

Budget Sliding Gloves
On 7/5/2000 Hamm wrote in from (63.29.nnn.nnn)

1st a disclaimer. I did not come up with this, Chris from nosewheelie.com had this type of set up before me. But here is how I came up with my Budget Sliding Gloves. Ultra Wheels, the cheap in-line skate co. has the solution. Go to your local Big 5(I'm sure any large discount chain sporting goods store will do) and buy the cheapest set of Ultra Wheels wrist guards they have. Basically all they are is 2 pieces of moulded plastic with a little lining and velcro straps. The key is that the palm is big and wide. It covers almost my entire palm. I came home, popped the rivets off and removed the backhand piece for flexability, put on a pair of work gloves with doubled fingers, slid these on over the gloves and BAM-Sliding Gloves. I can't get over how good they work! Total investment including buying the good quality work gloves at Home Depot was $18.00. Total time spent 'making' them, 10 minutes. I'm not kidding, they work great.

gps
On 7/5/2000 hugh r wrote in from (205.216.nnn.nnn)

Sarah,

With a gps you can indeed measure your speed. Only problem with mine is that I have to look at it because I have not been able to figure out if it will do a max speed lock.

Also, you must always have site of 3 satelites (not always easy in the hills.

To see how you can calc road grade using your gps, hit my page off of the NCDSA links... HR

iF YOU HAVE A gps, YOU CAN measure your speed in mph, correct? Also, can you measure hill steepness with one? Is there any model or brand that lends itself particularly well to longboarding? Thanx guys. --S

Speedometer
On 7/4/2000 Mike wrote in from (64.7.nnn.nnn)

I was looking in my popular science mag and i saw an article on an inline skating speedometer. It is a wheel that you can buy that comes with a digital display watch. I guess the speedometer sends out a electrical signal to the watch and tells how fast you are going. Its a good idea but the problem is you have to keep on buying special wheels when one of them runs out.

If anyone is interested, I have the wiring diagrams to make a step-down computer chipped mod that allow the bike computers to be used accuratly. (I got it from one of the NCDSA visitors)

It is fairly complicated (at least for me, I am not the greatest electronics guy) but if you have a working knowledge of circutry, it should be a piece of cake.

E-mail me if you would like copies... HR

Bike computers
On 7/4/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

On an Envy,or Krypto 76, type plastic mag,you should be able to fairly easily mount a magnet,(like on a spoke)then you just ziptie the pickup on the truck so its close enough to sense the magnet, you could run the wire though one of the extra holes in the base or just drill one.shouldn't cost more than forty buck, probabely less. When programming the head ,you'll need to know the roll out distance of your wheels and enter it at that step, this will change if your wheels wear but so you'll have to re program, if it's that important to you.

I just received an e-mail from Glen at Solidskate. He is going to check on the availabilty of this fancy piece of electronics on wednesday when they are back in the shop.

As soon as I hear something (or if Glen beats me too it) I will post the info.

Hopefully they won't be too expensive if they are sold seperatly... HR

Tail Skid
On 7/2/2000 Kanoa wrote in from (38.29.nnn.nnn)

Cutting boards for skids is an awsome idea, I had read about that somewhere and forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me about it. I think I'll pick one up at the dollar store, Walmart should have some cheap one's as well. They used to sell hard plastic ones. I have some vintage pics if anyone wants to see what they looked like starrovr76@hotmail.com

Yeah, the cutting board was like $4-5 at Walmart & it's big enough to make a block for two wide-tailed boards.

Tail Skid
On 6/27/2000 Sarah wrote in from (206.66.nnn.nnn)

I made the tail skid! Well, with MUCH help from my Dad and his arsenal of tools. We ended up using 1/2" plastic from a white cutting board. I traced the tail with pencil and then I transferred the pattern to the cutting board. We cut it out with a jigsaw which melted the plastic so we filed the little chunks off with a metal file. We drilled three holes thru the board and tail skid back toward the trucks some so I didn't end up sliding where the screws were. We used a 3/16 bit-thank you Pre-School Rider! Then we used some leftover truck hardware-thanks again!-to bolt the thing on. My Dad helped me countersink the screwheads and also the nuts on the underside of the skid. Last of all, my Dad used a Dremel tool to cut the screws flush with the plastic. Then I tried it and it worked very well and didn't wear too quickly. I like the feel of skidding on wood better, but this was almost the same. Next time I will probably try the wood. So, we did well with this project.

tail protector
On 6/24/2000 DOOBIE wrote in from (158.252.nnn.nnn)

I once took tail and nose protectors off of an NASH skateboard to protect my tail. just screw the wood screws in the wood. you could probly get one at a garage sale or something. try and give a kid like 2 bucks for it, I bought a few crappy boards in my younger days(although I'm not old) like that, that just used parts I needed.

Tail Skids
On 6/23/2000 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (209.198.nnn.nnn)

Sarah,I'd recommend using a dense hardwood block (Oak,Maple,Teak,Mahogany,Ash)cut to fit the shape of your board's tail.Make it at least 3/8" thick,up to 5/8" or so.Mount it with #10 hardware(3/16" drill, usually),which is the same stuff your trucks are mounted with. You might consider using T-nuts on the deck, thus poking the screws up from the tail block(careful, the Length of the screw has to be dead on).If you'd rather use plastic, ask a plastics supply company(look under industrial suppliers)to send you sample blocks of nylon, delrin,or UHMW Polyethylene, all of which slide well, and are as easy to cut + drill as most hardwoods.Check oldschoolskates.com for possible late 70's issue tailblocks, such as tailfeathers, tailbones, etc.

Plastic or metal tail skid

Anybody know an easy foolproof way to make a tail skid protector? The tail of my poor Bare Back Dominator is getting a bit worn and I want to save it before its ruined. I am especially wondering about what kind of hardware to attach it with and how big to drill the holes...Thanx
