It's great to be here in the UK, no real slalom skating near us, but the skaters in London are great. There are many indoor and outdoor skateparks with all the goodies, and Katii and I are trying our hand at it all. New boards, new things to learn.... going from longboarding/carving to learning slalom was nothing compared to this business of dropping in, balancing on the coping (sp?)and all that jazzy stuff. I remember watching you ride that huge half pipe out in Hood River, and when I see one close to it here, I think "OH MY GOODNESS".. Please come and visit, we would love to skate with ya. (Katii and I will be racing in Sweden on December 10th) the trip is as easy as going to Georgia, How Bizarre!!

Boy, I've been gone a long time. Looking forward to Legoland Sunday 11:30. Hi to Woodcamp! Glad to hear you are allowed to skate now. Isabelle, let's skate Lorretta this weekend. Saturday? There's a swell, but we can't surf the WHOLE day, or can we?

Now, before any potential sponsors take that whole, "sponsorship will kill skateboarding" thing I said wrong... What I mean is, sponsorship being the goal of skateboarders- it just ain't right... So, any free gear, money, etc. can be sent to: me. J/k. But seriously.

I agree with what some of you other ladies said about it not coming knocking on your door, but, I think it's a little ridiculous when I see the same kids skating the same tricks, making videos of themselves, and that's the only time you see them skate. IF there's a camera around. Stop me if I'm wrong, but isn't that just... I don't even know what I think of it. I don't guess it's pathetic, but, it isn't right...

sponsorship
On 11/4/2005 Laura Henn aka Betty wrote in from United States  (72.149.nnn.nnn)

My 2 cents: It's like anything else in life. Sponsorship will KILL skateboarding. It's not about free gear, it's not about money, it's not about fame and fortune- but wow, it's awesome that people can acheive that through DOING WHAT THEY LOVE. That's what its all about. If your focus isn't in the right place, it's OBVIOUS to EVERYONE who sees you skating that you are MISERABLE, and guess what? Desperation isn't attractive on ANYBODY. When you go out looking for Mr. Right, guess what? you don't find him. When you're short sighted to the point you can only see what you DON'T have, it's ugly. And skater girls who LOVE IT, man, that's hot.

LISA
great words of support and i must say that i still bust my ass.......and hips and shoulders etc...........

i'm glad you all had such a smooth path of support in skating...most of us aren't so fortunate to have found it without some hard searching, but you're sooooo right; BE BOARD FOR THE LOVE OF IT....that's what matters most.

hope you and the girls are still ripping like you always do!

Equality/Support/Sponsors
On 11/2/2005 Lisa wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

It's all out there. Especially in the skate world. When my daughters and I started skating, we were literally overwhelmed by the support, not only in free gear, but in every other way that is so much more important. It's not about busting your ass; it's about loving what you do and enjoying the people that do it with you.

Equality in a man's world
On 11/2/2005 isabelle wrote in from United States  (209.66.nnn.nnn)

Good luck finding it, equality is grande a myth which fuels my flame to better myself, motivate others to be healthy, love myself, family, friends, other chickas, even if the knowns just propose equality to get what they are often to fearful to ask for..........your sex or your cash.

I did bust ass getting "known", literally....no help 'cept for my son Russell(aged 9 at the time, then my beloved Gravityboard crew and some amazing Frenchmen of the Supaflex team.....

Then came the miracle called CONCRETE WAVE, where equality is finding itself....May the Transworld, Skateboard mags and the like burn in hell for their oppresive moves.....and may we see more thoughtful posts.......

THINKING IS THE ONLY MOTIVATOR OF CHANGE......NOTHING IN LIFE'S FREE....that's just another myth.

Bootstrap or Welfare? Are we weak or worthy?
On 11/2/2005 Gloria Steinem wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

"All I have to say is how the F*ck are you supose to get know(n) in the skate world when you have to bust your ass off just to get know(n), where are the people who are supose to support and help you(?)"

Why aren't THEY spending their time to search me out, find me and give me free money? THEY are such slackers, and it must be a plot to oppress me!

Who exactly is "they" that are "supposed" to be boosting women's skating? Why are they "supposed" to? What the F are YOU doing to make it worth "Their" while? Are you a great skater? Wahoo.....tons of those around, and guess what?--they all want free stuff and coverage and sponsorship and etc, just like we do.

So, how to the Isabelle Caudles, the April Woodcocks, the Ellen O'Neill's of the world get that leg up and become "known"? I bet it wasn't by whining about how oppressed they are and that THEY never came knocking on our door to ask us to please skate for them and accept free money. What do you think?

Do you want to get "known"? Then wash your hair, brush your F'ing teeth, pick up your skateboard and go meet other skaters. Skate with them, talk with them, socialize with them, and then go do it again, at somewhere bigger. Get off your own fat butt and shoot some video of yourself and post it on the internet so others can see. Maybe you SUCK, maybe you don't, but if you slink around in tiny groups of dispirited, griping bitches, then why in the world would THEY ever want to support that? Whoever THEY is, anyway.

THEY are all over, though. THEY support the All Girls Skate Jam, the Hello Kitty monster event in HB, the Downhill Divas and on it goes. THEY publish photos of us in Concrete Wave, every single issue! THEY also run like hell from anyone that demands "what's due" instead of grinning, stoking and riding. It doesn't matter whether we're a chick or a dick. NOBODY owes us anything even if THEY happen to be out there, just waiting for someone smart enough to come calling with a smile and some stoke.

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN IN SKATEBOARDING

anna,
i didn't quite understand your message, but FULLY AGREE with EMG.
skater chickas rule and finding those who "know"...... get to local skate shops, parks or streets; that's where the skaters at, ask questions after introducing yourself...kindness helps the hunted and hunters

Girls and Spills
On 11/1/2005 isabelle wrote in from United States  (209.66.nnn.nnn)

laura,
a huge part of why i stated the downhill clinics was to motivate girls to learn to skate safely...
so CONVINCE them you'll treat then kindly and get them started on EASY, confidence building roads.......they will step up and don't necessarily have to get injured to learn.
i did 'cuz i'm kinda wild like that, but i don't expect others to be like me, just play with me.
keep on urging, supporting....maybe you'll be their leader.

GIRLZ RULE..boys, oh yeah, they surely do DROOL!

Find local guys to hang with, motivate your girls to hang with you.

I started surfing SOLEY to hang with those cute guys in the water, my passion for waves came much after my passion for the opposite sex.

PEACE and charge, laura.
