Cliff, after almost three years of slaloming and falling hard only twice (once due to a preventable equipment failure), in the past two WEEKENDS I've managed to beef it twice onto my hands and elbows while riding slalom. Guess I'd forgotten how much it hurts!
Needless to say, the next item on my shopping list is a good, compact pair of slider gloves that don't interfere with pulling out of a starting ramp.

I know how you feel. As far as i know I'm the only slider in wellington New Zealand and it fantastic in some ways, i will develop my own unique flavor of sliding but its crap to have to hit the hills by my self all the time. No one to push me or give me advice...
the only feed back i seem to get is from cars telling me to get of the @%$#@@ road etc.
I'm trying to get enough cash together to do a pilgrimage to Berkeley to skate with other plastic handed riders and i also put out the offer of a bed, food and a car with driver to take us to some of the most amazing UNRIDDEN hills in NZ ...... Go on cliff come down under. Think rolling green hills, sheep and the smell of hot 'thane
At the moment I'm riding a deck that's more for carving and longboard surf style riding (cross stepping, nose riding ,drop knee turns etc) with 180s and Gravity sliders which does slide 180 ok but its really hard to get back so i end up doing stand up 180s kick turns as by the time i have slid 180 i don't have enough speed to pull it back. I think its because of a too long WB and wide wheel width.
I'm working on my new deck which should be off the mold late next week. Kicks, concave and a 20" wb a tiny bit of camber so it will still carve well. What are your opinions of using glass/carbon around a wooden core? I know DH riders don't like it too much as it tends to resonate a lot more than just wood. Whats a good choice for trucks? i was thinking 150s so i can still carve etc but keep the wheel width within the deck.

STARTED SLIDING TO STOP ALL RIGHT AT LOWSPEED UNTIL ONE DAY MY BOY SY DOIN ABOUT 70kmh AND CAME UP ON A SEMI BLOCKING THE ENTIRE ROAD--- HE RE-EVENTED THIS FAMOUS COLEMAN SLIDE. Good to hear from you! m I'm glad your on the net. I'm sorry you and the guys won't be here for the contest in Dec. Keep inventing those cool slides Mark.
For those of you who don't know, Mark Short is one of the best sliders out there. He won the Slide Championships this past Summer in Cornwall.
There are great sliders everywhere!

Your new prototypes are on their way and we incorporated several
of the suggestions that you've given me over the past year. We built
them around an all leather glove with even more Kevlar protection
and we moved the wrist wrap to secure on the top not the bottom. The
double pucks were heat pressed in a vise and should hold up better,
but I do see how the taller they are the more prone they are to tip
or break away......so I also sent you some of the stock ones (1/4 inch)
in a higher density.
I've sent along a pair of Bear Paws for you to lend out to
skaters wanting to learn slides too. Let me know when you get the goods,

Thanks for the memories. I don't think I ever saw that issue? The move is called a dirt grind, for the lack of a better name. If you do it in the gutter, it's called a gutter grind. You can get the deck all the way off the road surface and even do one footers. With enough speed, you can stay in the dirt and off the road for maybe 20 to 60 feet and still get it back on the road again.
By the way, you are a great slider and I wish you could be at the December Slidefest in San Diego, CA. Anytime you get over here you can stay at my place. Tell your room mate her boy friend says hello.

I have had my glove catch on one of those rubber traffic counters that resemble a garden hose. It took the glove right off of my hand and left me with a blister on my palm. If you had a puck attached with velcro, it would have probably come off. Then the velcro would have taken a beating and possibly need to be replaced. The good point here is you shoulder would be ok if the puck released. The hand would be somewhat protected by the glove with just velcro. Remember, if this were tpo happen to you, you would probably need to replace the glove and get a new one with useable velcro.

Cliff, I was working on my slides a couple weeks ago and dislocated my shoulder. The puck on my palm caught a rough spot on the road and just stuck. I was wondering if this has happened to others.

You will need hard 95a to 100a sheels for the spins you want to do. I'm doing well and skating many miles here in the Bay Area. I'm judging the Dec 3rd Gravity Slide Fest in San Diego, CA.

Your set up should work fine for you. Watch the hard wheels however for a while until you get used to them. If you need to ride cross town or longer distances, then switch to softer wheels.

Wear your helmet when trying toeside slides! If you were to get bucked off toeside, you could get thrown right to the back of your head. This is no joke. Please take me seriously. I have consulted on a legal case where the rider hit the back of his head and had to have surgery to reduce the swelling. Another friend fromn Australia who is an engineer had the same surgery fior the same reason. He can't smell anymore. A cool light weight helmet will protect you from this kind of fall.
For information on pulling the 360, try to slide the first part more than 180! Immediately push the slide about 200 to 215 degrees and then it will rotate the rest of the spin easily. Takes commitment and more than one or two tries. Check the "slide school" at Faltownskateboards.com. They have some great video instruction.

I ended up getting a good deal on a set Randal of Randal 150 trucks -plus- a set of Abec 11 65mm 96a Retro Vertz wheels. I'm going to stick with the Powell Peralta Skull & Sword (32.75" long by 9.5" wide with an upturned nose and tail).

cliff, i keep tryin the 360 but i cant get it. i start out with a 2 handed backside slide, and try to spin to my left (im goof footed), into a and normal cliff slide. but i cant get the board to spin after the first 180. help me out im gettin frustrated.
