when i first started riding in the rain, i was slamming on my ass because my board was sliding out from under me. now the falls on the rain seem even more safe than the ones without a wet slick ground. i mean when it rains i actually complete about 2/5 slides that i attempt, but when i fall, it seems that im just sliding on the ground and it dosent hurt at all. and also when it rains i never get any road rash. totally not the same on dry ground. even though you fall more in the rain, is it possible that the rain is even safer than dry ground?

Could you share with us more on how to do a Cliff Slide? Is it just a matter of turning your head and looking back around through the turn as you approach the apex???
also when reverting back from the first 180 to pull off a pendulum, what initiates this? with enough speed and staying locked i can do it but i've been wanting to revert quicker. Is there something i can do so i dont scrub off as much speed from the slide?

If you can get your hands on a Thrasher from September 1982, read the article I wrote titled, "Street Slidin'". At the beginning of the third paragraph I write about which slides and how to. The first sentence reads as follows, "The first two slides to learn would be the Bert and Layback slides".
Now you ask, how can this be? Why do people call it a Coleman? If you check the archives under "Techniques" you will find a post by Randle. The post is very flattering to me. Randle gives me the credit for developing a sliding style of riding that we did indeed create in the Berkeley Hills. However, Randle at that time called a basic Bert slide a Coleman slide and the rest is history.
I have ridden those same Berkeley Hills since the days of steel wheels and then as a member of the Hobie team during the clay wheel era in 1965. I still ride those hills and will until my body won't let me anymore. I don't see that happening anytime soon. Myself and my good friends that ride the hills with me use many sliding techniques. All of them except the standing slides DEMAND that the rider have a sliding glove.
The sliding technique that is described as the Coleman slide is the exact same technique as the Bertleman or Bert slide. Brad you are 100% correct on this one.
The difference is that Bertleman did his on Waves and mostly on Banks. We did the Bert slides and many other slides with slide gloves that allowed our slides to lengthen to what has now been measured at the longest at, 250 feet. This was done at Hiller Drive in Oakland, California by Chris Gilmartin. He was going Approximately 50 when he began his slide.
Being recognized around the world as the individual who started this sliding style of riding brings incredible pride. This is enough! I get to meet skaters and make friends In Australia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, France and Korea. If I had the money you would have to know that I would travel to every race and as many countries as I could to continue skating and sharing the thrill of this activity, Skatebording.
Let's honor Larry Bertleman, a fantastic multi-sport individual by setting the record strait and continue to call what is commonly know as a Coleman slide a Bert slide.
There is a slide called a "Cliff Slide", named by Rich Dunlap, famous for doing the sliding stunt work in both "Thrashin" and "Gleaming the Cube". The Cliff Slide is where a regular footed rider approaches a sharp right hand turn and does the first half of a Pendulum slide, then takes the rest of the turn backwards before reverting 180 degrees back to your normal stance. Reverse this for goofy footed riders. Is anyone getting confused yet?
As I told Manu when he actually appologized unnecessarly to me regarding the Media calling the sliding techniques, "Euro Style". My response was and still is, Call sliding what you want. Just keep teaching it to everyone you can. The more people that learn sliding techniques will make it a much safer sport. MAKING THE SPORT SAFER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE WHOLE SLIDING PHONOMENA! The skating world now has these techniques but not everyone uses them. They are easy techniques, getting people to try it is often the task. Please pass these techniques along to others.

I am off competitions, especially this one. NoooOooooo. Not because i am in a fight with the main event sponsor, but because it is my girlfriend 30th birthday, and no way i am gonna miss it.
Thanx for the trust in the movie we are trying to come up with. When it will be ready, it will certainly be a fresh new breath in the slide movies. Completly different than the others.

Very nicely stated Fab. You made your point without getting angry about it. I respect you for that. You made several valid points and again, I hope you get the entire thing settled. Even though I saw your footage on the internet and on Evolutions 2, I will still gladly buy your video when it comes out. I like to support people/companies that are worth supporting. When Faltown's video comes out, I will definitely buy a copy. Whenever I get around to making sure my DVD player will play the Lush video, I will buy a copy of that as well. I am also planning on purchasing "Tuck" by Timeship Racing.
I am looking forward to "Drift" and hope you can make it out for Slidefest.

I KNOW that internet is not the best place to go out loud about something personal, but sometimes its the only way to get someone reaction, speaking of Gravity, that was not answering my questions and respecting the fact that we where no longer together so NO MEDIA USE FROM MY WORK. I know that Concrete Wave is a big window to the world of skaters but i would have liked to be promoted as a FREELANCER, for my movie DRIFT, not as a part of my ex sponsor promotion dvd, and of course, consulted before all this stuff happen. I have LOTS of details that i didnt come out loud with, about the agreement we (Bream and i) had. I could go big, and legal about it, with the laws we have here in Canada. We call it "la propriete intellectuelle", wich means that the artist stuff belongs to the artist at 100% if no money or contract is involved, wich is the case. From the first verbal agreement, to the separation of the two parties. I will ask Bream, i have a telephone meeting wich will be held when ill have my things together, to make sure it wil not be an angry call, but a FULLY BUSINESS THING. Cause it is not a friendship issue at this level, but a moral ethic. I knw that Bream is a nice guy, but i got bashed, and want something to be corrected. Point. It makes me sad to call a prima dona by my fellow riders. It affect my vision of the family of skaters we are suppose to be. Sure, Gravity has done a lot for sliders, but i think it is the sliders FIRST wich did put them on the map. Its a freakin piece of wood, some urethane wheels, point. Then, the visibility and contest. The promotional machine, wich i dont need, cause i work in this domain, is useless if you decide to organise it. Dont need help from anybody. I am NOT skater, Will J, i am a graphic designer, a photographer and a future dad i hope, and THEN i am a SLIDER. Id rather skate than go to a gym. If a skater is someone wich is only being a punk, a beer trasher, a pot smoker, a trouble maker (on a computer like you, but a tender feet like in person) and someone whom is workin for 8$ a hour witout a future for its family, then you are right, i am not. I never pretended to be a skater at all, never! Prof Mark: If you go on our french internet site, you will see that i did a whole chapter about how good was your crew, and how much of a reference you where for us, canadian sliders. Ask Cliff, he will tell you how much i respect you guys. I keep telling my self that when i will have the money, your sector will be my next destination for some slkiding class. Why do you say i dont give you full credit of your slides? Did i stole anything from you? No. See, this is why we have to stop this sponsoring machine for eating us all alive. Its becoming like the skate scene: TO MUCH COMPETITIVE. Ask the riders who where at the TOP CHALLENGE this year. It was a big mess, but i suggested to forget about the comp in general, to have fun, and the the best trick (BEST TRICK) of the week end would win the boards, and the prize money will be redistributed within all of us, EQUALLY! Freeriders, no money issue. Money is bad when it is involved in a small community. Freetrades, exchanges, now that is the best way. When i film with Yann (G3) and then put it on internet or somewhere else, its not because i am egocentric, its because i know a young appprentice will learn from it, and then one day do better, and of course cause i love shooting and edit films. It is the way i learned, and so much other sliders. Stop believeing your selfes by sayin that its just for putting my ass up here on the web, i have another life wich is givving me more money and more proudness than this one. Sliding is my passion. A passion has to be protected. I will. Thanx for your understanding, and again sorry if i was to hard core for you guys, i just wich we could have a good conversation in front of a beer one day. his troubles are nothing new to the action sports industry.
you have one side - a partner that usually only sees what they do for the rider. they promote & advertise, sell, make money, and uses their rider's image. (yeah they may mix in their own creative art etc etc but thats besides this point)
then you have the other side - a partner that usually only sees what they do for the company. they promote & advertise, create, often subject themselves to longterm physical damage to have fun - they cash in this image of fun and trade or sell it away. They often sacrifice their future to live big in the present.
often the company takes advantage of the rider, not always some companies stoke them out for many years to a lifetime. i still have solid relationships with some of my past sponsors even though we no longer work together.
this doesnt describe every type of relationship but usually both sides need the other to be successful.
if a sponsor wont put a contract in writing it should let you know of what sort of things are to come. if they have a track record of putting things in writing but not honoring them, then you shouldnt be surprised when it happens.
keep a journal of everything you do. keep track of dates, times, and a short brief comment that describes your action. how core something is doesnt matter, but consistency does. it holds up in a court of law.
