Smash! D.C. and P.D.'s Van.
On 10/11/2002 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

Besides Evolve, which is okay in a pricey sort of Bethesda rich-boy surfer and snowboarder kind of way, and the way cool people but out of the way skateshop in College Park, D.C. residents relying on public transportation may also choose to visit the Smash! record store at the far end of Georgetown. Punk Rock and Georgetown to me seem to be a funny sort of combination (trust fund punkers?), but whatever. The skate shop is way in the back of the record store. Typical shortboard stuff/setup, i.e.: forget about decent wheels, risers, mounting hardware over 1", trucks bigger than 155, etc. But a skateshop it is, and it did sell some Deathbox action. Probably because of the circle-A, but again, whatever.

P.D.'s in Vancouver is core, has been around for ages, and the people there, when they're not sportin' 'tude, are super cool, devoted 100% skater-types. P.D. the owner is one of these, and does his part to embrace longboarding and slalom in the merch he sells and the boards he makes, otherwise known as Skull Skates. Just wish their prices were a bit less steep. You also get the added bonus of being one with the hoi-polloi--I should say hosoi-polloi--punks of Canada as you put stains into Skull Skates shirts (also becoming somewhat trendy among hipsters, what) and shred those Skull Skates decks. I always saw punks on Commercial with trashed Skull Skates decks, the tails half ground away.

ok, had a freelance gig on the upper east today and stopped by there to see what bushings they had in stock. wow, they have a loaded deck (mmmm...flexy), most of the fiberflex line including slalom and longboard decks. They also have randalls and tracker RTX and RTS trucks. the prices are a bit high, but it is the big city.

it's located on york ave between 85th and 86th streets

Which Athens? (please say Ohio. I know of no longboard shop around the southeastern Ohio tri-state area. There's only one skate-shop and the guy's extremely cool, but with the exception of Deathbox, doesn't have too much for the old guys!!)

Red Nik Surf Co. Calgary, Canada
On 9/12/2002 Dave wrote in from (24.71.nnn.nnn)

Wiiiiicked little surf shop in the Canadian prairies. I am from Long Beach and was in Calgary for business when an associate told me to check out this little Surf and Longskate shop she found in Calgary. Upon entering I was sure I was in a shop back home and not Calgary. The owner is a really cool older dude who really new his stuff about the Longskate stuff and Surfing. He had a really helpful young girl named Dana who was just as knowledgeable on Longskate. This shop has a better selection of Longboards than any shop I have been in back home. They let me test ride 5 boards and I bought my nephew a Tahoe 162. (sweet ride). Prices are better than in the States and the Crazy canuck buck adds extra value. Billy said they will ship boards anywhere and are selling lots abroad because of the cheap dollar. Check these guys out www.rednik.com and you won't be dissapointed. I will buy all my gear when I come up for business here. They have wicked clothes as well. Tks to Billy and Dana (and Hana the Chesapeake Retriever(coolest shop dog ever) for their great help and hospitality.

Bozi is the bomb
On 9/10/2002 R. wrote in from (156.40.nnn.nnn)

I just wanted to put in a few good words for Jeff Yarrington at www.boziboards.com. Most of the e-tailers are very cool folks to deal with, but Jeff went beyond the call of duty. He was extremely kind, helpful, patient, thorough and meticulous, and went to great lengths to make sure that I would get a combo that was what I wanted. He even sent me jpegs of a set-up I was curious about and redrilled a board to the old-school specs of the Deadbolt. What more can you ask for except to stand on the board? Despite a little shipping problem with USPS, which Jeff was diligent about trying to resolve but was actually completely out of his power, I have to say that I have nothing but good things to say about Boziboards. Except that the bridgebolts were an unholy hell to put on the deadbolt trucks, and I really should have let Jeff put the complete together, but noooo I had to grip it myself. Packing was a good job, too. It was like going to a really good skateshop.

thanks for your comments, all noted and welcome feedback to a retail beginner

as you can tell, i don't have a knack for marketing my site which is definitely www.jsurf.co.uk (thanks for extracting this Pierre), but i did skate in the 70's and 80's, still skate now and glad to be part of the UK movement.

I checked out the link Pierre was so kind to provide. Not much there but they`re just getting started so I`ll have to check back.

I just wanted to comment on the opening statement...

"...remember before there was the Ollie?...blah blah bal...
....this is Old School..."

This wasn`t the first time that phrase was used and i`m not singling them out, BUT, the OLLie move IS old school. Do you remember seeing those pics in Skateboarder in the 70`s of Alan busting his signature move?

In skate history, Alan will go down as the most famous, infamous skater. His move revolutionized the way skating is done and yet most people don`t know who he is.

I love this...I ask a young skater..."Do you know what an OLLie is?" "Of Course" they reply. "Do you know who Alan Gelfand is?"..."Alan who?"...the standard reply.

So Tony, consider yourself....OLD-SCHOOLED!!!... heh heh !!!
