OK, so does anyone have reservations already at the Motel 6? Anyone need another occupant to share room-rent with? I'm a floor-sleeper due to my back so I won't take up any bed space. In fact, last year(or the year before) I slept under the sink counter-top so that a small collection of big and not-so-big Canadian types would'nt step on me in the middle of the night and it worked out fine.
Post here or email me with the email-name-click thingy. Thanks - Paul

Schedule and Hood River Question

I hear you on the scheduling thing... Conflicts are unavoidable, and the fact that we are having them is a good indicator of the growth of our sport, across all disciplines. Racers are going to have to make some tough decisions, organizers are going to have to understand them. For example, we have a little slalom outlaw going on in Calgary on the same weekend as Salem and Vernon DH.... Some have told me that's in bad form, we disagree... It's just how it goes. It'll be small, and we ca live with that.
Ok, on to my question about Hood River: I'm planning on dragging my tent trailer down for the race. I've emailed Cascade Travel (official travel agent for the Gorge Games) asking about RV Parks/Campgrounds. They are taking reservations for Bridge RV Park, which is apparently just across the river from the GS venue. Anyone else staying there for the race? It'd be rad to have a bunch of us camping in the same spot. If not, where are y'all staying?

How stoked are we to have this problem. Too many events to attend. Oh woe is us...
For someone like me, The variety is incredible. I too, have many conflicts this summer. I'll take that over the alternative. I have to say, It's so refreshing for this to be discussed in a civil manner. So many valid points. I feel the love and respect in the room. I don't have any magic solutions or anything, I just think that we could communicate more between disciplines. That falls on those of us that travel in all the different orbits.
We should also mention that we have 3 sites that we here in Portland use.
pdxdownhill.com, eastsidelongboards.com, and Subsonicskateboards/myspace.com
They are all used to communicate this kind of info. You're right James, it would be nice to have one comprehensive listing. Take Huey's race last weekend for example. You can find pics from that on 4 or 5 different sites.I love it.
See you guys at some kind of race real soon! live slow - SKATE FAST

There are 2 slalom events held in Portland every year. The dates usually don't conflict with other events and are announced at least 1 month in advance. Only 2 of the CSA racers have ever shown up.
There are more than 12 races in Portland this year. Downhill, cross-country, and even 3-4 slalom races. Some overlap with larger events so that the kids have an option. Other times it's unavoidable. There are several locals who attend races of all disciplines, so they choose the one that is the gnarliest. Or the most fun. Most downhillers don't want to sit on a hill all day, only get 5-6 runs, and go half as fast as they normally do. And most slalom riders don't want to go 50+ MPH or bomb down an SGS course in the rain. It's just a matter of what you are comfortable doing. There will never be a 'perfect schedule' unless everyone decides to do exactly the same thing.
My solution? If you don't like what other people are doing- do it yourself! The attendance might be a little smaller but everyone will have more fun! Newbies will be more willing to attend an event that makes them feel comfortable and not intimidated. Then work their way up.

Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to bitch for bitching sake, I would just like to attend events. It would be great to see some more cooperation and communication between the disciplines and that is more the point I am trying to make. I FULLY understand how hard it is to put on an event and not every event can be planned without conflict. The Gorge Games I would assume is a pretty hard date due to the other events involved. The Vernon race is on the IGSA website, The VernonDH website and coastlongboarding, it is out there. Maybe you should contact with Shane at northwestboarding.com and discuss schedules. Again I am not trying to bitch just to bitch, and I do have MAD respect for anyone who goes through the effort of putting on an event, it is thankless and not easy. I see this as an issue and I am trying to start a dialog about the subject, this has been something I have mentioned to many promoters over the years, including CSA. And Casey I would have loved to attend the Spokane race last year, it just happened to be scheduled on the same day as Maryhill.

I agree, as far as planning goes, it would be great if we could agree on ONE or TWO places to post, and personally I like the simplicity of ncdsa's format for that.
Stryker, August 10th conflicts with the final Portland Pusher, but there's not a much conflict there as far as numbers of people affected. Just another good example that there's not enough summer weekends. We need Bill Gates to work on his system and get our weather under control here.
Btw Jon Huey's OLY ROLLY last weekend was awesome! Great seeing you there Deano! Here's the organizer man hisself with a Dopamine board, one of many NW longboard sponsors

The date for the Oregon State Games was established 02JAN2008 on NCDSA.com calendar. It might have been possible to correct a conflict if I had been informed sooner than 3 weeks before the event.
I'm having trouble finding the Vernon DH listed on the NCDSA.com calendar .... If I had seen it posted, I might have had a chance to avoid the Vernon race date.

In a perfect world the schedule would fall together with no conflicts. In the real world there are too many variables to consider. The summer calendar only has so many weekends as Corey stated, then we factor in other events, venue availablity, the personal schedule of the host/organizer etc.. The chance to be a part of the Gorge Games is a great opportunity in many ways, it would be foolish to pass it up because of a conflict with a downhill event. Auburn was originally scheduled much earlier, with no conflict but weather caused it to be re-scheduled. If we held out for clean and pure dates only, we would only get one or two races a season. We have to make choices based on our personal intersts, its a shame to turn it into "us" and "them". Its skateboarding, lets have fun with it. -Mark

Hey Deano, I agree with you about conflicting dates on the events. Tho, I'm sure it's not as easy as you think. I can't speak for the other slalom events(I'm sure they do the best they can), but the Auburn race was actually suppose to happen a few weeks earlier. We did miss a lot of our downhill friends that usually show up and race with us. Hopefully they'll join us again in the future. We did have some longboarders show up and give slalom a try for the first time, and now they're hooked. So we're pretty happy.
I will say that John Stryker did an excellent job putting the Auburn race together. Same goes for Paul Howard, Pat Chewning, Gareth Roe, Mark & Judy Harris, all who organize slalom events.
I guess all I'm saying is- we are going to have races, your gonna have races. the summer doesn't have enough weekends, and the weather around here doesn't help. We give people choices and we welcome everyone, not only to race, but to more importantly- to practice with us also. As long as we're skating, we're having fun, and we are getting more kids involved. BTW, where were you when Mark, and Judy had a slalom race in Spokane last September? We missed you.

You want young blood in the sport?

If you really want the kids to attend your slalom races you should not schedule your events on the same days as established downhill races in the region. Here is an example of the choices the up and coming under 16 year old crowd in Seattle has this summer (not to mention the older DH'ers out there);
May 17 & 18 Auburn (1st year) or Danger Bay (7th year running on this weekend and the largest skateboard race in North America)
There were many under 16 year olds that attended this race, including young Spencer who actually won one of his heats in his first downhill race. Not only did the young guys choose Danger Bay there were another 10 to 15 northwestlongboarding.com folks that would have attended a local slalom event if it did not conflict with Danger Bay.
June 21 & 22 Oregon State Games (these dates have changed from year to year) or Vernon DH (this is the 4th year of this event and this year it is an IGSA event so the points count toward a ranking just like Maryhill)
I know that some of the young ones are traveling to Vernon instead of Salem.
July 18 – 20 Gorge Games (this event has change its date every year) or The Sullivan Challenge in Kimberley BC (This is the 7th year of this event on this weekend).
This one is a little farther to travel and it may not have the impact on the younger skaters but it does prevent me and my old fart downhillers from attending any slalom races this summer.
It seems that if you are going to go through the incredible effort it takes to put on an event that you would want as many people as possible to attend instead of excluding the very people you need to grow your sport.

Ramps for Salem races

I promissed some ramps for the State Games races.
I'm thinking of building something like these Quebec ramps: http://www.slalomskateboarder.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3613
But perhaps even lower height, and perhaps without the final transition. The theory being that when set at the top of the Salem hill, the natural "ramp" portion of the upper part of the hill will add to the height and provide the final transition.
Does this sound reasonable? Does anyone want to help? Any other suggestions?
Basically, my goals are:
1) A minimalist ramp. 2) No fear factor for beginners. 3) Low cost 4) Easy to transport 5) Use as much of the natural hill "rampness" as possible. 6) Simple to construct. 7) OK if it only works at Salem and not on other hills.

Hey, That video footage was pretty fun to watch. Looks like everyone had a good time.
My nephew and I slalomed in Colorado and randomely ran into Barker in Longmont, then we rode the skateparks in Longmont, Ft Collins, and Cheyenne. If you ever go to Cheyenne(the redneck, s#@!kicker and makebelievegangbanger capital of the West), be SURE to take your park setups and a broom. They just installed the BEST kidney pool I have EVER skated at their skatepark(plus some other cool stuff). I can't believe that in the town I grew up in that they actually have a GREAT cement pool as part of the cement section of their skatepark(in addition to the metal ramps that are O.K.).
Anyhow, that looks like a fun race, wish I was there. -P
