Hey, Thanks for the easy quick linkup to those pictures for us Internet Illiterati(it's a very secretive clandestine fraternal organization complete with conspiracies to be theorized about). That was fun looking at them. It was almost like I was really there. Oh, yeah, I guess I was there, it just seemed to fly by so fast. Dang that was fun. Thanks -Paul

Hey, thanks but...... If I just click on the "ALBUM" thingy, it just connects me to that photo website and I can't seem to find any other pictures from the Slalom-O-Rama. Do you have more details or keywords to put into the search? Thanks - Paul

Work up an appetite on the Cheney Hill in Tacoma for some slalom @ 10am Saturday, then we'll chow down on some delicious burgers and ice cold drinks right down the street at Carl's Jr. Sound good?

Cat, So awesome to hear from you! For sure let's keep in touch. My email is brenda.hoppe@amec.com.
You guys were so fantastic for making the trek up here from NoCal. We owe you guys a visit now!
Can't tell you how great it was for me to watch a woman rip up the course like you did. Gives me some major inspiration to get out there and work on my slalom. Really looking forward to meeting up with you again soon!

The weather is going to be so gorgeous tomorrow you'd be an idiot not to come out to Mt. Tabor in SE Portland and join the PDX crew for some slalom runs.
We'll be setting up cones at 4 on Friday and be running the course til dark.
Any questions call Brenda: 971-222-9117
See you there!

Rich, the most natural line through the park is what I tried to go with. And backside (regular footers) for turn one, sends you naturally into a speedline through the rest of the park (IE it sets you up for the next corners). Going the other direction would work, however I don't think it's as "natural" and believe me, I'd rather go frontside through the whole thing (as a regular footer) because that's where I feel more comfortable. And as with any bowl or corner, you can anti-pump and actually slow down through the corner. It's really a big wide turn, and not overly difficult at all.
We can discuss starting near the finish, and going down to the deep end that way, eliminating the roll in start as pictured. But, as Dave Addington said, the roll-in here at Aumsville, is less gnarly than the one that we use as start ramps so it shouldn't be a problem.
Pat, The best way I think is to duct tape the wires along the top of the spine to the roll in for the start and simply drop the wire straight down from the grass onto the finish line area. Shouldn't be a problem at all.
A starting gate? That would be interesting. In this application, it would be difficult to keep the "Starting gate" still, as the concrete is very smooth (maybe the bottom could be neoprene? ). Do I think it would be good to have here? Sure. Not really necessary, but would be fun for sure!
I don't know about the Salem hill application. That's another story. I think it would be cool if we could hook into the steel starting things they have in the concrete there.

Dan,
Thanks, that looks like even I could do that!
A couple of questions:
1) Is there a way to get wires to that center island without crossing the skate path? (Power, speakers, etc.
2 Would it make sense to build a small miniature starting "platform" where the skater can get set and pull into that roll-in for the start? I'm also thinking that this mini-platform could be used at the Salem hill, just at the crest, and use the natural feature of the roll-in instead of a big mega start ramp. Anyone like that idea?
And yes, I believe that you can pass over the cones in any direction, and in any order for skate-park racing .... at least that makes sense to me.

About the proposed park slalom course: Looks good for skaters that ride regular stance. The fastest turn should be # 1 as it comes right after the steep roll-in. The line as drawn will be back-side for regular-footers, which is easier to carve for most folks. Might be a good idea to allow the skaters to carve either direction over cone # 1, so goofy-foot skaters can carve back-side. I'm fairly sure I would bail or fall if I tried to carve front-side that fast!

More photos are coming...
In the mean time, Pat, here's what I would propose as a tentative course through the Aumsville skatepark.
Starting in the middle, where there is a nice roll-in feature to start in. Then follow the numbers through the various corners.
(Click photo for larger image).
And end in the flat bottom of the min-ramp area. (Click photo for larger image).

Salem was a BLAST! Thank you Paul for putting on such an awesome event. It was great seeing old faces & meeting new ones. It was great seeing Brad again & meeting his posse-- James, Tim, Cory. I'm glad I finally got to meet all my Washington buds from Silverfish-- ya'll rocked it! I hope you continue running cones! Thank you Michael Dong for all the help---- I soaked everything up like a sponge. Thanks to Jody for such a great job keeping everyones time--- I'm sure she got tired writing all my times in. Last count I had 25 runs on the white course, 10 on the red course & 2 on the downhill. Someone told me there was food there, but I forgot to eat--- I was having way too much fun! I'm sure I'll have a bit of a hard time walking tomorrow--- it was worth it. Can't wait to see more pictures!
