Salem 100 Cone'r
On 5/9/2007 Mr. Salem Course-Setter wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey Mike and Pat,

Last year we ran 100 cones on Pete's old 7ft spacing and I was planning on doing that again this year. On that hill 7ft is bad enough that I don't feel like going any tighter. I still feel like I need to use Abec 11 Stingers to do it.

The "other" straight and tight course will likely start around 7ft and go up to an 8ft, and maybe 9ft spacing at the fastest part of the hill for the "less experienced" racers who want to stay in the game.

Again, all this is "hopeful" planning at this point since we just got our house and need to do some pre-move-in fixing, then actually move and vacate our apt by the end of the month. - P

Dan,

You can sighn up at the event. I have seen the preliminary course and it looks fine. I stopped by Aumsville last weekend and put up some posters for the events. The local skaters were bragging about how they are gonna KILL that course and win it all.

I'd love for you to set the course. If you can't make it for some reason, we'll wing it.

We need to actually START the event by 7pm in order to get through all racers. If you can be there by 6pm we should be all set.

As I recall, as this picture was being snapped

The Axe Banditos got in an argument regarding their Axes size vs how it is used. The Jackman Dan-O Overdrive got into it with the Alldred Brothers and the next all hell broke loose! Then as the commotion went on the guy in the middle grabbed his Roe board and blazed down both courses and proved that size and technique are both important. Realizing this, the Banditos shook hands and downed some Tequila singing Aye, Yi, Yi, Yi, We are the Sk8kings Banditos!

2) I need a volunteer to set the course at Aumsville skateboard park. Dan Hughes? Dave Anderson? Someone?

I have a preliminary "set-up" that I posted. I'll make a page for it. I'm planning on being there and helping out, and racing. What time should I get there?

Also, can I sign up down there, or must I sign up on line? I only have that friday available.

100 cone spacings ...
On 5/7/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

Michael,

In my opinion, the straight course should not be made too difficult for the average racer (e.g. by going sub-7' cones). This race is for amateurs, not PROS.

However, the availability of the easier course might make this more acceptable.

Another alternative would be for the "PROS" to re-set the course after we are done with it and we can get your times as "demo" runs.

Paul and I will consult each other, listen to everyone's opinions, write up a spreadsheet of pro/con points, run it through a statistical analysis, then flip a coin....

FYI: The Oregon State Games is for Amateurs only. Pros can sign up but are ineligible for medals. Pros are racing only for ISSA points (or for fun). Not as official contestants in the Oregon State Games.

Pat & Pauli,

Would it be possible to make the "advanced" 100cone course with spacing 7' or less down the entire course? It would be nice to see just how close we can get to sub 20 sec. times.

Course setting State Games
On 5/4/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

For the GS: The course from last year or the course from the BBQ would be just fine.

For the Hybrid: The mirror courses from last year would work great again.

For the tight straight: 100 cones is fine and I think most of us love that challenge. But would it also make sense to have another tight straight course of fewer cones, more spacing? Then those who DQ twice on the 100-cone could take a run on the easier course and get a time? We would place the people who made the 100-cone in 1st-Nth place, and people who only made the easier course in N+1 thru M place.... This might make the event more open to all abilities.

Hey, cool, I'll do what I can, hopefully this moving to the house thing does'nt stop me. I'll basically set courses similar to what I set last year, nothing too hard or tight but lots of rythm and direction changes, mirrored head-to-head for the general course.

PAT - Are we running the 100 cone straight and tight again? (which we might as well just give the 1st place to Gareth and get it over with). I'm assumming we are but let me know - Paul

Salem Courses

Yes, let's mark the courses on Tue May 29th

In other news for the State Games races:

1) I need a P.A. system. Brad Jackman was going to do this, but he's going to Europe to race instead.
A) Microphone input
B) Other input for tones from timer system (RCA jacks work fine)
C) Speakers that can be somewhat remote from PA system

2) I need a volunteer to set the course at Aumsville skateboard park. Dan Hughes? Dave Anderson? Someone?

3) Ramps: I would really like to use start ramps for the race -- either the existing starting ramps (we can place them back on the top flat part) or preferably: small start ramp/gates that we can place just on the lip of the hill. Push start sucks. Any volunteers?

4) Sign up now, online at www.stategamesoforegon.org

Addendum to the previous post
On 5/2/2007 Same Guy as Before wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey, I just checked www.salemsbd.org and they(the Soap Box Derby Club) are running a 3 day event on Fri-Sun May 25th-27th. So, I'm thinking that marking the hill up with multicolored circles prior to their event might annoy them and obviously I won't be able to mark the course while they are using it so I'll likely mark courses on Tues May 29th or later on a day before going to work. Again, let me know, - P

PAT - Do you want me to set courses again at the Soap Box Derby Hill? We'll be moving soon(probably the bulk of it Sun/Mon 27/28 May) so I may have to do it Tuesday May 29th. Or I may try the week before. Also, the way things are going at work(lots of extra hours) I may not get a chance but I'll do what I can if you want me to again. Let me know - Thanks, Paul
