Hey BoardWildman,
See through would be cool, but plexiglass isn't going to
handle very well. It will be heavy, unresponsive, and saggy.
I know that sounds harsh but trust me on this, i've been there
and it's not pretty. If you want see through, learn how to make
molds for fiberglass and lay one up that way. It will still
be heavy, and not as clear as plexi, but at least you'll be able to
ride it. Wood really is the best thing to make boards from.
Except maybe carbon fiber-- if you can afford that maybe you could
loan me a few bucks! Good Luck.

I am making my first board, I'm thinking of plexglass as material, imagine it, sidewalk surfin' with a see-trough board, that ROCKS !!!!
What my question is ; Is this material any good on making longboards ???

Did someone try the Astrodeck stuff it was sold for windsurf boards under the foot straps, i think it's the stuff you're talkin' about, but those living in calif, should know better than me.

"Deckskin" or similar material?
I've seen a few posts about decksin, as well as the "foam" top sector 9. Does anyone know what this material actually is or where it can be bought? Is it neoprene? How thick is it? Can you get it at a hardware/builder's supply store or do you need to go to a direct manufacturer? How much does it cost per square foot? or by the inch? Any help is appreciated. I'd like to try something other than the standard grip tape thang.

Adding camber...
Some years ago, when my parents still had their own Skateboard shop, we had some boards made for us by some radio controlled model boat makers!
They would apply steam (who knows how) and then bend the (ply)wood into shape. It worked.

Hi, I just built my first board ( 58" long, 10" wide) and it came out
great. I drilled the holes for the trucks so that they would
fit the trucks that came with my sector 9 (PIVOT). My question is
as follows : Will these holes fit other trucks? I ask this
because I noticed that the Pivots are smaller than the riser pads.
If other trucks are bigger, is my only option to drill another set of
holes?

Hey crack,
Tell me if you will about the poplar deck you cracked, i.e.,
wheel base, width, and thickness. Was it a solid piece or
laminated? Did it have any fiberglass? What were you doing whe it
cracked? I've been using poplar without problems; but I tend to keep the
wheels on the ground most of the time. If there's a lesson
here I'd like to learn it without the personal experience. Thanks.

BE careful of poplar. I cracked my favorite shape the other week. I was able to fix it using deck screws in counter sunk holes drilled through the sides.

I tried 5/8" 12-ply baltic birch plywood on a 48x12 inch deck and it was way too flexy for my 200 lbs. I went to 12-ply 3/4" and it was perfect. The extra weight is not a problem.

For making boards, try oak or poplar. Poplar is cheaper, not as good looking, but will work well. You may also want to check "House of Hardwoods" in west L.A. I got 48", 54" and 60" by 12" baltic birch 9 ply there for about $9-10 per board. These are 3/4" thick, so they'll hold your 225#, but they are kind of heavy. At 54", you may be able to find a 5/8" board that will work too.

Well, ready to take the plunge. Decided to "roll my own", and want to use hardwoods - either maple or birch. I will be using the board for cruising, sidewalk surfin' and the like. I'm considering a board between 48-54", and I am 6' and 225 lbs. Was hoping someone could answer some questions. Which wood & why? What thickness so the ride has some flex, and some strength? Thx for the info!
