Gullwing design is Genius. But not the first to the angled kingpin through the hanger. Speed Springs were about two to three years ahead. What baffles me is that this concept didn't become the standard and how dominant the rollerskate design is. But then again people still use VHS.

Simfucious, those Snakes are an 88A,according to a 1978 Sims ad on the back of one of my Skateboarder Mags. I know, they do feel softer! I was running these a few years back on a Fiberflex in Cambridge, and came up behind John Gilmour-He whirled around and said,'Those wheels sound like Snakes!'-which of course they were. I still ride mine around on a fiberglass board for slalom-style turns. Too bad they didn't come with a core!

Wasn't sure of the duro. Thanks man. Kirtis should be sending me the Sm=nakes when he gets back fron Bali. Looking forward to slapping em on my new G&S [coming July 1st] with the Tracker fulls I have. This thing will scream. I have Hyper Stradas coming as well as OJ Superjuics NOS. I'll have wheels for every occasion I hope. Figured I'd buy a classic cut away too. Can't have too many slalom boards in your quiver hey???

BoBo, Would you happen to know the Duro on these wheels?
I was just curious. I've been using these for slalom
And they are amazingly fast! Also they seem to grip
the smooth roads better than my power paw aluminators 70mm/74a. Please help with the Duro. -Christian

Stripped nuts(ouch)

Jez ! that can be tricky,if you grab the nut(axle:)with a needle nose plier and turn, vise grips usually won't reach, and pry between the inner bearing and the truck while turning counter clockwise, first with a thin flatblade screw drive and work up to thicker and thicker. Clamping the whole board in a vise helps or have someone else hold the board. No quarentee to the condition of the threads when your done.A 5/16 x24 thread die can clean things up, but it's not gonna put thread where the metal is missing from the axle.

Kirtis, take a good look at the 'free' end of your axle.Look closely for an indentation at the axle's end.If there isn't an indention, you can tap the axle out through the hanger. If it is indented,DON'T try to punch your axle through!Get an nut splitter from a car-parts store instead. This may trash a bearing, maybe even the threading on the axle, but would do the least damage.Axles can often be re-threaded,and alomst always replaced,Snakes, and Tracker hangers are not so easily replaced or repaired.Good luck!

Welcome Joe T... Not much has changed on the bearings scene, except the names! Guys still have their favorites and almost everyone has a different way of cleaning and lubing them.
Most all finally agree that bearing spacers and speed rings are the second most important factor to bearing speed... right behind being properly cleaned and lightly lubed.
Most guys are using one sort or another of very lightweight oils... synthetics are very popular. WD-40 is out as a lube (attracts too much grime) grease is out (too slow)
Hit the bearings archives for hundreds of post of lubrication discussions... don't think any one is using any water product to clean anymore. Too many good clean drying solvents out there these days... HR

Interesting I must admit I would not be here if curiosity had not got the better of me, All of a sudden people are using Firbrflex type narrow boards over here. I had to check out the scene to find out what was happening. I must admit that I never really could see the object of a Tea Tray with a cotton reel in each corner,(That was my own personal opinion of a modern park type board)
I beleive Kryptonics must be the "Daddy" of all wheels for pretty much the same reason as Gullwing. Do people still do weird stuff to there bearings, like soaking them in variuos stuf like washing up liquid, are bearings an issue anymore? hoover, skf, peach

All I can say is that gear has actually gone backward if you will. Now thinsticks are in. And we started with thin sticks. Gullys are the truck of choice [barring the great Trackers] as the slalom truck of choice. Those of us with deeper pockets pick them up and add them to our quiver. But Gullys are the truck of choice for me. Nostalgia and function are the main reasons. Gullwings are forever. What truck company can say that? [Barring Tracker who I have a couple of NOS sets].
I love my Trackers too!

I would probably be looking to add to my collection rather than sell it, I just wondered whether there were any good sites to track down stuff. I must admit I find it amazing that people are still interested in this stuff. So with that in mind do you think that the gear we used in the 70's could match modern gear, is it like cars where most of them have become standardised, only the classics stand the test of time. There did seem to be a much wider variety of decks and wheels in those days, some of them useless but still interesting to try, does anybody remembers wizards with a sort of tread pattern.I noticed the off road boards of today use a similar design. Things im looking for,White YoYo's,Powerflex 5 or 7's,Power Pivots. How much are gullwing split axles worth these days?

I bought this deck off gbj a few weeks ago and it had new grip tape that was shall we say "Creative". Since I wanted it to be mine and orig I talked to Mark Anderson of Poolrider.com who sold me the decal [the one on it was shot.] Then got some Shorty's brand grip tape and had at it. I think it came out nice. I got some NOS stickers from eBay and threw em on for the period look but thsoe darn NOS Gullwing Phoenix's hadn't arrived and Andy wanted to session. So I took the Indy 146's off my Gurerro and threw em on. grabbed the 70mm Krypto classics off one o my longboards and Voila! It worked OK at first but Andy suggested turning the wheels inside out to put the hard edge outside and shorten the wheel distance. It worked like a charm! Time got better and it seemed more stable. Well the Gullwing have been shipped and should be here in a few days [c'mon Mr Postman!]. Bought some NOS green Sims flatbacks from a guy here on this site. Also have some 64mm To's [OJ rip off] man those are great wheels! Really fast and about 82/84a just right for slalom. Bought some vintage Trackers off eBay tonight [you dont' wanna know what I paid but they were mint!]. So now it's just wait for the G&S re-issues [I'm getting two cut aways]. And I'll have a couple of set-ups for different stiuations and a few wheel sets to choose from. But it was pricey! But hey I'm worth it! Might sell of my Sims Andrecht to offset the damage these purchases have caused. Will put it on eBay though. The set-up is Sims Andrecht deck [very nice shape], Tracker ex-track with copers and UFO double conicals. Should fetch a good price for me to off set this slalom madness of mine. Glad you liked the pic.

I did see your picture, sorry not to have replied sooner. I have that same board BoBo. Did yours come with the rubber grip tape? Mine's still wearing it. I rode it barefoot a few times (possible because of the rubber deck) but the fibreglass splinters were hell after the edges got a little banged up. Love that board and will take it to the grave. This summer I'm going to deck it out with its original trucks (bennetts) and some new power paws to see what happens. I used to use fulltracks, but dragged my toe on the wheels a few too many times (don't try this at home, kids). It originally had power paws on it (the most beautiful clear green urethane, like alligators, and a bowl-shaped face with a thin lip. pretty slow but man did they look cool. I think I'll try a set of independents I bought a couple of years ago. I like the way they turn way better than the trackers, 'not sure why... MH

I used to have XCaliber trucks attached to MB Deck, then some horrible wheels which I think were called Amocos, they seemed to be made from the same stuff they make pool balls from. I progressed to Gecko5's. I ended up with a G&S Fibreflex teamrider, Belair Lip Bombs, Gullwings, for every day street and park, for park and pipe, Santa Cruz Deck, California Slaloms 7", powerflex 5. I loved the gullwings mine never broke, I did muller my Slaloms and ended up with the heavy duty ACS650, Here in england I think were always a bit behind you yanks but its great to see some people remember this stuff. Does anyone sell it or trade in it?
