Took bearings apart... races popped out real easy... not molded in at all! Turns out just regular ol RR 4's with some funky bearings! Still pretty cool for the price... anybody want some old non-sealed bearings? HR

Thank you Dave G! Ol Herbn is almost always right, so it is paticularly good to hear that someone has heard of these things! They are definetly NOT NOS!! They do look at least 25 years old.
I'll take some pics and post them up pretty soon...
Also just talked to my bro and he is in possesion of one of my first decks... some funky blue fiberglass job with some excalibers and power paws... thought that thing was long gone! Can't wait to get that one back! HR

Hugh,try these places for your bearings(bring one or two along to be sure they match)-Bike shops,preferably ones that cater to old,British + Italian roadbikes;or try a rollerskating rink,one that's been in business for awhile.Last chance would be good ol' McMaster-Carr.

Just a correction to my previous post. It sounds like Kaspian has a G&S Bowlrider, not Parkrider. Hobie made the Parkrider, and it was a completely different design, altogether.

oh the irony,things that make you chuckle,i'll have to go check my most vintage perfect E bay bought from Ted Terrebone 76 skateboarder,the vintage gear bible, but i'm 99.9% sure Road Riders started sealed and were always sealed,other wheels;real Powerpaws(not that i don't think the new ones are great),Alligators,Cadilacs,and what not came out loose bearing and were later offered sealed ,some were adaptable,i think Apex mags,maybe someone just put some really cheesy semi precision bearings in roadriders.

Kaspian, It sounds like you've got your hands on a G&S Parkrider. As I recall it, this board followed the first G&S Kicktail models; adding a bit of rocker and additional rigidity, when compared to its' predecessors. This board, at least by original design, is not a slalom deck. This, by no means, means that it cannot be used for slalom. Depending on whether my assessment of the model is correct, I'd have to consider the additional rigidity of the Parkrider to be a plus. In fact, I always have my eyes open for a decent G&S Parkrider, which I would immediately turn over, converting the rocker to camber, and use as a slalom deck. In fact, I might even run it upside down, with the tail forward. (By the way, the G&S Parkrider should not be confused with the later G&S Teamrider, which was a square-tailed, blunt-nosed, utilitarian shape that bore a curious shape resemblance to an earlier, innovative shape introduced by a friend of ours.)

Unknown 70's G&S slalom deck

Could somebody hazard a guess at what I've got here? After a swap with my friend George, I'm in possession of a G&S Fibreflex that seems to date from the mid-70's or so. No photos yet; here's a description:
- 25" x 6-1/2"
- Simple "surfboard" shape (no cutouts, tapering to a point up front, rounded in the back)
- 3 plies of wood sandwiched between 2 layers of glass
- Top is black with grip running down the center, cut out to reveal Fiberflex logo; bottom is all blue
- Slight rocker (about 1/2"), rising to a 4" kicktail aft of rear truck
There is little sign of this board ever having been ridden: a few minor cosmetic nicks, an ACS sticker on the bottom, slight indentations in the grip revealing where trucks were once screwed in.
Anybody know what it is? I can't decide whether to ride it or sell it (so as to buy a different G&S, probably) -- or turn it into a starter slalom deck for my son Tristan. Any comments appreciated, as always!

Just picked up a very bitchen set of self-contained bearing Road Rider 4's... these are the type of wheels that have an inset race with a male piece that you tap into place to hold the loose ball bearings.
Anyone have any experience with these? I had never seen them on this paticular wheel before.
Also, I am a couple of bearings short... any ideas where to purchase some at? Thanks, HR

Someone mentioned Quicksilvers the other day,and after contemplating making decks like that in my new camber mold, ad no1 flashed on the HDTV set in my head ,and THOSE trucks were clear as day and those rounded clear red wheels, neitherof which ever saw mass production,as far as i know,the wheels may have been early pours of Powells,and the truck,who knows,the back truck was different,maybe a tracker.

My friend George the Surfing Plumber found an old G&S slalom deck in somebody's basement where he was doing a job last year. It had belonged to a kid who grew up and moved out a LONG time ago. The old folks were happy to sell George the deck for a few bucks.
George is not enough into skateboards to have taken the time to figure out exactly what this board is or what it's worth. (He knew it must be worth SOMETHING because of the G&S name.) I only eyeballed it once a year ago, but it looked to be about 27" by 7" (very roughly). It was in amazingly good shape -- barely discernible marks where the trucks had once been screwed in -- as though the kid had hardly ridden it.
I'll have to tell George there's this whole slalom revival going on, G&S reissuing classic decks, etc. Maybe he'll decide to sell it. Or ride it.

Yeah It's mine. I recently had my first boy and figured that the expense of setting it up and the liability of me trying to master something I probabally couldn't along time ago was not worth the effort. So as much as I admire and loved the board my options to sell it were limited to the Ebay. I hope any of you that want an 8 will get ahold of HR and get one made for yourselves. The qualty and art are second to none. The Toft sticker was an after thought as I never had nowhere good to stick it. Seemed appropriate.

Holy cripers! i got the same board,right behind me in the shop,just as mint,except for exactly one tail scrap and vintage clear grip,yeah the rough stuff.But here's the killer,Speedspring narrow with the big yella bushing,UFO 2.5 wheels, sfk sealed german bearings,the one on Ebay just went is it's on for 250,or buy immediately for 350.

OK, I will weigh in on the NOS debate as a newbie collector, (6 months, have about 5 complete setups, mostly late 70's Sims) It became fairly obvious the fakes, i.e. the same Sims Kicktail kept showing up on e-bay - no holes drilled, looking brand new. If they were new, why wasn't I seeing the same thing for later models i.e. Lonnie Toft's G&S, K-beams etc. I think there is a secondary market for reproductions and I think that if some company could get around the intellectual property issue there would be a healthy demand for old school skate supplies.
The issue here is people passing on fakes as originals and how do we deal with it.
Might I suggest a NCDSA stamp of approval on original items. You can set up a panel of experts who could examine items and give thier 'best' decision on whether it is truly original. Disclamer could be something like as follows. "We have determined that to the best of our abilities the aforemetioned item is an original piece of skateboard memoriabilia." You would apply for this stamp directly to NCDSA and pay a small fee, for most items several good photos would be enough.
For the collector community and the newbie this would be an effective seal of good housekeeping. Concurrently you may also want to post a psuedo BBB of known fakes and unscupulous dealers.

The OJ's are crap compared to the Kryptos. If the green kryptos are semi-clear, with square edges (the original molds), these have sold for a lot on e-bay. Later, opaque green 70mm, will have concave lettering, are worth a lot less, but are nice to ride.

I think most of us old schoolers are hip to what is or what isn`t NOS. Problem is when newbies get into collecting and get burned.
Some might argue that they should`ve done their homework first but in my opinion it (fakes) not only cheapens the value of real NOS stuff but also takes the fun out of collecting the old stuff.
Maybe we oughta have a punishment for those who deliberately pass copies or fakes off as originals.
Hows about dropping them into one of those LA spillways ? (like when it`s flooded)
