Dom,
regarding your ACS 651's. although i'm not completely certain ( i'm at work!!, so i can't look) i think my 651's purchased in 1976 had 2 sets of holes in the base plate, but i'm not sure if they are new school pattern, i fact, i have just looked at a photocopy of an ACS advert from an old skate mag & it looks like that all ACS trucks with Black bases had multple holes, but the inner set of holes looks too narrow for new school.

Playing with my old Pacer wheels...noticed they fit the axles really well on my trucks, so I mic'ed 'em out. These are the ones with large bearings, with a spacer / sleeve that runs all the way though both bearings and the space in between. The wheel has inch-size bearings, 0.5" ID and 1.125" OD. The spacer / sleeve is an actual 5/16 slide fit(not 8mm), thus the good fit. I like the idea of a spacer / sleeve, it keeps the bearings aligned in ways that just a spacer can't. Too bad the pacers had rock hard urethane, the bearing assembly made essentially a small hub and was (and is) better than most.

The baseplates on my Gullwing split axles and Pheonix are slightly different. One has the pivot cup slightly forward, but can't remember which one.

Duane, the Phoenix had a narrower axle and a solid hanger, whereas the HPG had a split axle hanger and was 7" wide at the axles. The baseplates are the same, and you'll want the kingpin bracket on if you go do slalom runs with these,as the kingpin could snap the base easily during quick, violent turns.I didn't like the green bushings, and my Phoenixes run Yellow Randal conical bushings and soft Tracker bushings. The HPG could work with the original bushings as the axle width provides better leverage. Those green Sims wheels could be Snakes,Comp 2's,or Mini Comps, but they'll say on the front of the wheel. If that is somehow missing on all four wheels,I can dig up the sizes of each. You've got an excellent 70's wheel/truck combo there, one that's got both Slalom capability, and collector value.

My gold gullwings "HPG 4" printed on them, with green bushings, which I think are original. Don't know much about gullwings, are these the absolute originals or the phoenix? Pardon my ignorance.
Also found my Sims green wheels, snakes I believe, with Sims german racing bearings still in place. Are these worth anything? Should be from 1978-79.
Must convince my parents to move more often, more stuff turns up almost daily.

looking at pictures like the one with our mystery skater below, makes me really miss the skateparks of the old days. When Upland got the Combi pool, and Marina and Big O, came about with their pools, the older parks with their mellow snake runs and resevoir style bowls all went away and skaters even made of them. I would give up every one of the new school skateparks, both public and private ones, for a Skatercross, Montbello, Concrete Wave, Skateboard World, etc. ( The Boogie Bowl being the one exception, it was worse than the new parks).

The giveaway for Mr. Economy's pic is the Montebello local info. Gotta admit, doesn't look like Ed, Looks a lot like Ed's Montebello homie, Bobby Piercy.
Hmmm...

This guy, duke, comes in yesterday with a Jimmy Plummer with Pheonixs, squished green bushings still in place, and i guess old faded sundried powell bone (gen 1). I couldn't believe that such a little board could weigh that much! ouch.

I have two issues of Skateboarder handy, the "Toft issue" April 79 and an earlier, perhaps mid 78 issue, both have references to these bearings,in the earlier one they are minor listings in mail orders in the Toft issue they are in the back cover "Snake" ad. I'd say 79 to 82, i recall a long long waiting period, were we were teased with mentions and rumors but availability was non existant, that could just be a eastcoasters prespective.
