the old "praying mantis" stance takes the world's biggest race - must have been a lot more to winning than being "aero" good job to all of you guys. I look forward to Chaput's (hopefullY) detailed analysis of components, racing styles and race orgnization.

Sorry I got some of those qualification results a bit wrong but they are pretty similar to that. Excuse me if I get these wrong but here are the final results 1st Manu 2nd Eli Smouse 3rd dallas Oberholzer 4th Darryl freeman 5th Eric Lee 6th Roli Hafner 7th Stuart Bradburn 8th Arneld Gray 9th Craig Mckune, Chris Chaput + two other dudes 13th MEEEE, James Louw,+ two other dudes In my quarter Final I had Eric Lee, CHris Chaput, and Dallas Oberholzer Dallas took control and got an easy first Eric Lee was ahead of myself and CHris and we were gaining on the finish line he was about a foot ahead of chris and about two feet ahead of me, I was pretty bummed about just not making it but it was still better than losing the heat all out. I am soooo stoked right now it was such an awsome comp, Everyone was stoked at how it went down. I was put on south Africas biggest sports channel for the highlights I have to go now I will give a full tale of the event later Mikez

This site is and will become the leader for the skateboard world. The up date on the Cape Town race was great , even the races here are not that fast at what is going down. THE NEW THINKS THAT ARE COMING OUT ARE TALKED ABOUT HERE .What can we look for it the next few years is hard to think about because so much has happened in just two years. Guys , please keep it up ! I got to ride on sat. and will rain here for three more days , who says it never rains in southern CA. Hay ( MANCUB ) WHAT HAPPENED ?

I am trying to covert my freebord deck to a buttboard/longboard. I would like to know what length wheelbase for most buttboard(ie the Lott's buttboard). Also I checked lugeluge.com, they have a RII buttboard truck, how are these different from the regular RII's.
Anyone interested in slalom, downhill or buttboard in San Jose. email me.

Today went awsome. I qualified 13th and am in a race with Chris C tommorow. The qualifiers were 1st darryl freeman(HAW) 2nd Dallas Oberholzer(RSA) 3rd Eli Smouse(USA) 4th Manu Antuna(FRA)(I think he came 4th) 5th Chris Chaput(USA) 6th Ross Snowden(RSA) 7th can't remember 8th can't remember 9th Stuart Bradburn(RSA) 10th Tyrone Goergiadis(RSA) can't remember anyone else On my first qualification I just took it quite easy so that I knew I would qualify and qualifyed 14th On my second qualification I kind stuffed up cause I went into the top corner of the S-bend nice and fast and instead of flying round the corner I went into it too fast and was scrubbing speed and sliding through the corner which in turn made me go slower out of the corner. I still knocked 2 seconds off my time and ended up qualifying 13th. I was real stoked to see how many locals qualified for tommorow. The day before the race we went for a training seshion on the roughest hill in the world(Red Hill, See riding locations) After which Myself, Stuart Bradburn, Roli Hafner, Gustav Stutterheim, James Louw, Ross Snowden, Daryll Freeman and Tyron Goergiadis went for our own training seshion on the smoothest hill we could find. I could keep up with everyone who was with us and am pretty positive about tommorow. I know the course and I will race Chris C in my first heat(who I hope to wait for at the finish line, He he he)I wish you guys could just see the atmosphere here it is so awsome everyone is just sooo stoked. Chris's wheels seam to be doing really well. I had a feel of his board and it feels really good. I have met loads of really hot skaters and they all seam to be saying the same thing "this is the best course in the world" and "it has a little bit of something for everybody" and "yehaaa yay I love it here" Gerhard gave a really good speach about what he wanted the race to be like and everyone seemed to be pretty stoked about it. I am scoring all this cheap equipment. The pro's race a wheel once and they pretty much give it away. I am just so stoked about this race being so good. It is so nice having the hill all to yourselves. The only bad thing about the race was They missprinted 1 of the results sheats and the camera on the S-bend gave lots of people big frights sometimes causing them to go off their line only to realise that the camera man moves it out of the way as you get close to it. I have been told this is the biggest race that red bull has ever held and they are expecting 30000 people to show up to watch the races tommorow. Anyways enjoy your day( I know I will enjoy mine)This 14 year old is signing out so long skaters, Mike Zietsman

Randal himself told me that they dont make that much of a recognizable differane regarding speed, the main idea is that they are safer, they also have better geometry options than the regular speed trucks. If you smoke your bearings, the wheels will still roll and you wont crash. Its reasons like these riders shell out $150 bucks for a set of trucks.

re. Danny. Most podium guys had spin axles ,doesn't say that much about their effectiveness. Podium guys have talent plus an attention to detail, they try everything to go faster, there is no telling exactly how much of their winning results from any single factor, you may over look these trucks because of money or whatever reason, they do seem at least a little advantage,be it just a little extra slingshot or being able to hold off a slingshot,or reslingshot a nonspinaxle rider.Maybe windtunnel testing and adjusting your tuck would do more, maybe.

Herbn, Duane, and Hugh R, Thanks for the input on the drop throughs. Herb was correct I was using the veneer for asthetics, thanks for the heads up on the holes for the loosening bolts. Duane thanks for the idea on flipping the hangars. If it ever stops raining I could go out and test drive some of these ideas. I will try to get some pictures posted when it is complete. Again thanks for the help everyone.

Hey Fellas, Well, personally, I think having the floaters DOES make a difference. I think it only makes difference where there is a fairly long straight or something. At Mammoth, all the guys on the podium had 'em, and at Barrett, the only guys who did VERY well had 'em. It could all just be a conincidense , and seeing how I only have a set of the no-floaters, don't take MY word for it. I just honestly tink they make a difference. But like people have said, it's not only one thing that makes you faster, it's a lot of things that do. Oh well. All I do know for sure is that I want a set of Comp-2's. Does anyone want to sell me a set? Later.

RII Drop-through

Randy, I am planning to do a drop-through just as you propose. Granted, with a flush surface it won't be quite as low, by the thickness of the baseplate plus the thickness of the veneer, but still a 1/2"+ lower than conventional. I'll use my plunge router and a collar to follow a template, the template having been perfected on some scrap or crap plywood first. By the way, have you flipped the hangars yet? While the pivot is slightly thrown off by this, the ride height drops 9mm (3/8"), and it slows the turning response a little, which I personally like. 3/8" doesn't sound like much but it makes the RII almost exactly the same height as Indy 215's, which have always been comfortable to me. I'll try to post pics when / if I complete it.

I don't think Randy was mounting the trucks on the laminate, just covering up the baseplate, with a vineer, just for the aesthetics .Better leave holes for the bolts though ,they will loosen.

Randy,
The amount of stress that the baseplate will put on that thin piece of laminate will probably be enough to break it. You may want to consider some re-inforcement. Check a deck I did for flush mount R II's... HR

More good info (and so many choices!). Thanks again.
I just may be a budding speedboarder. It's a lot of fun. Without being a soulcarving post, I would like to say that the sound the wheels make, when they pass you at speed, is as awesome as the sound that comes from a high-powered Bose stereo system (I don't have one).
Are you guys all from Cali? I have people in Santa Cruz, and a couple places in SoCal. Maybe we could ride sometime. I've been carrying my board with me on my vacations since I got it.
I've had my eye on the loop road in Red Rocks Park in Vegas. I did some rock climbing there, and the road looks preety good (in sections anyway). Anyone know anything about it?
Thanks.
