Chris,
How was the road surface in SA? Bad as Barrett? Any problems with glass or chunking?
Ready for a review? HR

Shoes - Wheels

Same brand, different shoe. I no longer wear those (deadly) slip-ons, these other ones have a reinforced toe. I also found some cheapies at K-Mart which have a better sole. When I went to SA, I had one right shoe, and five lefts. I ended up having to race with one black and one white shoe because I prefer to burn through shoes (braking) than wheels (sliding) at the bottom. Some thought it was a fashion statement.
WMy wheels are 52mm wide with a 39mm contact patch. Sidewalls go from vertical to chamfered to radiused, similar to the Cherry Bomb. I could have made them different than that (for the sake of being different), but it turns out to be a pretty good design (we may have Sean Mallard to thank for that). As the wheels wear down, the chamfer prevents the sidewall and contact patch from squaring off and either chunking or getting skittery in a slide. I could have chosen to do sidewalls that were parabolic, straight, radiused, multi-angled, concave, etc. The center-set hub design helps to prevent coning and allows the wheels to be rotated to ensure long life as a practice or slide wheel as well.

Hey Chris - I thought you were going to stay away from those.
After someone T-boned you and broke the old toe I thought you'd be sporting some protection. Someone else also wrote recently about breaking their toes in some flimsy shoes.
Tough to beat the price, but those medical bills add up too. 4K for me in skate-related shenanigans last year, mopped up by health insurance.
I'm sure your last "toe job" wasn't cheap either. Protective gear is always cheaper than bodyparts.

I totally think that the kevlar leathers rule is bogus, the "buying your way on to the podium" idea is not my personal opinion, just a general opinion, i think you may have mentioned optimizing your equipment,(means having the best)to eliminate any doubt about ones abilities."Begginers luck",is sort of a twist or neg spin on something i did not intend to say.You seem to be doing really well, and not rolling right onto the podium is probabely a good thing, when you do it'll mean more, to everyone. Keep up the good work, how wide are the wheels?they sound cool.

Herbn, Although the kevlar leathers that I've used in the past were perfectly legal to use in the DHX South Africa, I found out that it was the race promoters intent to not have them used by the pros. Although Marcus Rietema of IGSA defended my right to wear them in the race, I left them in the hotel on raceday to comply not just with the rulebook, but with the spirit of the competition instead. I sold my Comp-II trucks, Cherry Bombs and M-80's to local RSA racers for cost or less than half of what others were charging before the race. I used R-II and Comp-I hangers on Downhill baseplates, homemade boards, homemade gloves, my own wheels, $7.00 Payless shoes and $300 leathers with tape over the holes in the elbows and knees. I don't think that "buying the best" or using an aero helmet on a technical course is what helped me to qualify 5th. It could only be one thing. Beginners luck.

i was never and still am not a "fan" of anyone, but i enjoy, chris' sharing of information, his reinvolvement in skating ect,i must say i root against him when i hear he's gonna be in a race,i'm happy that buying the best doesn't put him right on the podium.I'm aware that chris feels that some sort of magazine politics made him a "star" in "Wide World of Skateboarding" and not even top 50 in "Skateboarder Reader poll"and Alva no1,i think he has said he wants to try for a second career in skating, cool by me, Alva's still around, and still in pools,he should get into downhill too/again, that would be interesting.

yes from time to time chris types with much confidence but he is also one of the largest souces of info on this bulletin. he goes fast, prototypes and reports directly to us. keep slandering him and he might just go away........... not my preference. i think this sport is ruled by the older generation because it takes a gentleman to win in this game.
my two cents.

I want to make make a public apology to Jon Warburton (Jonny X) for a comment/post that I made after having read the post found below (now found in the Archives). It should be noted that the post made by Simon included an error (most unfavorable to Jon) that may explain the reason that I poked fun at Jon, but in no way excuses it. From what Jon has told me, he finished very closely behind Hardwick in that qualifier. From what I have experienced first hand, Jon is an excellent rider, a serious competitor, and a great guy. It was wrong of me to make that post, and for that, I aplolgize.

Ok here goes,
The hill,
The hill starts on a medium grade and drops slightly into a sharpish right hander after which you turn slightly left and right again, speeds here reach 75 kph(47mph) on a tailwind day. You then have to slow down to about 50 kph(30mph) and take the first hairpin of the S-bend. This is one treacherous corner, There is a rough patch on the inside where most people decide to ride, the rough patch makes unsuspecting victims slip out unexpectadly. This corner took the most wipes of the comp and in my opinion the hardest corner to take on the course. A short straight leads straight into the next hairpin(my favourite to take people over on)which raps around and as you come around expecting to see a straight you just see more corner, a huge drop down the road leads to huge acceleration to about 50mph with the tail wind a small right another straight and the shicain(treachorous little basterd) and into the straight were top speeds are generally attained and passes made. On a tail wind day I have heard of guys going over 60mph, do rmember that there is no set tail wind the course wraps around too much and for it to be tailwind the whole way down would mean that the wind direction would have to change nearly every corner. That is the description of the best course in the world on which the best race on the whole world is run on, the course stretches 1,7 kilometres
My visit to the school
On Friday my mom let me take the day off school to go practise, to get to the lodge where everyone was a staying you have to go past my school, well we couldn't resist taking a drive through the school with our helmets on and shouting rude things at the teachers who always give us shit, Today at school some dodgy comments were coming from the teachers about naughty little boys taking off school to miss tests and have fun(He ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha HE HE HE HE HE HA HE ahem ahem HA HA HE HE HE HE)
Practise Day
later that day we went to possibly the worst road in the world for practise.(red hill, check riding locations)We did 2 runs each before deciding that the road sucked, and trying to ride it would only bend axles and waste wheels and shoes. Gerhard gave his little speach which made very much sense and everyone seamed pretty stoked on his ideas.
Riders meating
the race organizers told everyone the new rules for the IGSA and Tom Mason made a rude comment to an inliner
Welcome party
After the riders meeting it was off to the welcome party free drinks ment that everyone tested the local beer at least a dozen times, some(not all) put it to a huge test and regreted it the next morning.
Qualification day
After a night of not being able to sleap all the riders showed up early for the practice runs, all the riders put the hill to a test(some were shown how much the hill likes to be tested)Many called it the best course in the world. You guys have no idea what it is like to have skated a hill in traffic for an entire year and then have it to yourself. . All the local boys qualified and I drank tooooooo much red bull
THE RACE DAY!!!
It was very hairy sitting there waiting for the gates to open before my race as soon as they did Dallas took the lead I drafted him and was catching up he slowed down for the S-bend and I didn't in the hope of catching him.... well I fell off and was shown doing so on Live TV Highlights and on ESPN. I picked up my board and the guys behind me also fell of(VERY VERY VERY STOKED) I put down my board backwards and had to stop to pick it up again but still got an easy second. My next heat was a little tighter Eric Lee, Dallas Oberholzer, Chris something or another and myself. The gates opened and I got a krap start. Stayed close and took chriss on the first corner of the S-bend on the second corner I took Eric and he out accelerated me on smaller kryptos and ceramic bearings. I was drafting him and chris was drafting me I started taking him as the finish line aproached and so did chris. I ended up a wheel base short of second and chris about a foot short of second VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY BUMMED.
I ended up getting = 13th with three other peple
I will be going to Hot heels if it doesn't get in the way of school.
Before I fiish off I just want to say that there was a lot mor to the DHX than the race organizers started almost 6 months before and had a hard job hosting the biggest race ever held, In my opinion they did REALLY REALLY WELL at it.
