So what is Kludy, Do you skate for the soul of it, or do you do it just to be "1th (sic)" Say it's one way or the other, not both.

Rick,
I would be thrilled to work with your tapes. Just DON'T give me the only copies! I'll figure out how to use this crazy editing software and put together a VHS tape and CD...
I think it would be so cool to start making resources available to all the skaters out there. I'm not interested in making any bucks at this stuff... if you want to it's totally cool with me.
I just want to put my name in the credits! And maybe a signed "Kludy" deck!! Might actually be a way for you to come up with a little scratch to put towards racing expenses?
Speaking of which... where you ever able to get hold of the Latex guy? (my bro's bud) HR
Are you going to be able to make Barrett this saturday? Or is the weather sayin "Roof me!"?

Hay Hugh , I feel we can do something with the tapes I have , three years of training , racing , and some great crashes. From all over the place,if you are into it I would love to show you what I have and maybe make something out of it.I made and filmed this stuff for when I become OLD , to look back at what I had done and show my great great grand kids what the old man use to do for kicks .They are very close to the heart and have not be seen and are very raw !If you can do something with my tapes , maybe as good as a sponsor. I am willing to take a chance to make something that could help new riders coming into the sport to see how it is done and pick up on alot they would never be able to see without racing. In training we push , we pull , we will take each other out to win when we are training and I have it all on tape.We dont realy try to take each other out but you would not know it in some of the tapes I have. Its all good ! If this turns you or any one else On please let me know and I will cut them lose.

Hey guys, Kludy has a pretty nice tape of him going down Barrett that I recorded from a chase car. It would be a god way for rders to see what kind of turns, surfaces and suprises Barrett holds. The only hing I don't like about filming for a chase car is you really can't see the kinds of speeds, or get a "feel" for them! You just have to go out and do it!

SA vs Barrett Junction

The SA hill and Barrett both require some kind of braking before the hairpins, either lots of airbraking or a foot drag. SA has a left hander, a short straight then a right hand hairpin, more than 180 degrees. Barrett has two rights, both less than 180 degrees separated by a couple of turns. The surface in SA was close to ideal, Barrett is a minefield of rough surfaces, cracks, caterpillar tracks, rocks, dirt, sand and surprizes. There are many more opportunities to pass at Barrett which is wider and has a much longer run out after the two more technical turns. SA can be done in 1 min 32 secs and Barrett takes over 2 mins 30 secs. Neither are extremely fast but both will get your heart-rate up in a hurry. They are similar in that they both have a top section with a couple of chicanes that you can stay tucked in while gaining speed. They both have their technical turns about 40 percent into the course and have more chicanes on the bottom section where staying fully tucked is a challenge. Both SA and Barrett can both boast "I've something for everyone".

Darren Lott is currently acting as a guinea pig having recently purchased a helmet camera kit at CameraHelmet.com to work with his (tiny) Canon Elura. If it works out well, I'll be getting the same for use with a Canon Vistura and/or a Canon GL1, depending on how much ri$k I'm willing to take out on the road with me. The Rogers Bros have a ton of luge/buttboard/speedboard footage, all of which is analog. I think that the best thing to do is to get our own footage, all in the digital format. I have a little trailer that I want to throw a mat and harness down on and drag behind a pace car. It's a single axle trailer so it may bounce too much but what have we got to lose? What we really need after that is a server which great bandwidth to display our masterpieces on.

Dave,
I have a video capture card arriving today. This will allow us to film using a standard camcorder and to put the images onto a VHS tape, CD, or Web. I like the CD option myself.
I figure we can tape each others runs and maybe some of the fast guys too... then analyze style and weaknesses...
I am hoping to have a luge mount ready for saturday. This will allow a real good view of each and every turn at Barrett... HR

The only speedboarding I have on tape is whats on 'Big Stick' & 'Monkey'. I know racers film each other in practice and races. Anybody out there willing hook up a guy up with tapes? I need to study! I'll be happy to pay for tapes & shipping if you can make copies.

So what's all this whining about "you shouldn't use the expensive stuff" Does this mean we should put a financial limit on the amount we spend for gear...say $200. Come on guys this is racing. Racing is expensive in any sport. Try car racing- blow up a formula one engine every race- that is reality my friends. Skateboard racing is out and out the least expensive form of racing next to swimming- oh yeah, you gotta rent a pool. Trucks last forever, the wheels last a while- the board lasts nearly forever, your expensive Kevlar leathers will last forever if you don't do anything stupid- or put yourself ina risky situtation.
So what if the leathers cost a grand, and if the helmet costs $500. I say ...a $5 dollar helmet protects a head worth $5. Get the Gear- be go fast, be safe and be more flexible to avoid falling. The cost of Kevlar leathers is forgotten much sooner than acres of road rash. Too expensive.. get a job, write letters get a sponsor. Win don't whine.

Wheels

Even though the race course itself was smooth, the practice hill was anything but. The wheels were tortured on some pretty bad surfaces without any problems whatsoever. The wear pattern is nice. All wheels will tend to cone slightly toward the inside due the slop of an 8mm bearing hole on a 5/16" (7.9375mm) axle, but even this was minimized by the center-set design. Rotating the wheels reversed the wear and will allow for longer life expectancy. Anyone who slides a speedboard or luges will appreciate not having to accept or toss out badly coned offset wheels after only a couple of hard runs. To date, the only problem I've encountered is when I took wheels that were about 6 hours old (newly poured) and slide them over glass and metal at Barrett Junction and incurred a single cut. I think that the lesson there is to let the wheels fully cure before running them at Barrett. Wait till you try the harder compound on smooth surfaces. You're going to need a diaper.
