Why does it look cross grain?I think my concave will be flat in the middle, between two "ramps",for straight consistant truck placement.

Chris,
One other thing. On your speedboard design, how do you actually get the trucks straight. I got some decent advice from Herbn and others when I made my homemade board post a little while ago, but it still doesn't feel like a science to me. Are you lining the hanger edge up to the center-line? Or some other way?
Thanks.

Thanks Chris. That seems to make more sense to me. I actually have in mind another 48 x 13-ply, built for speed. And one with the new seismics for flatland. That should take care of my current desires. I just have to finish the graphics on my new 58 and then I can put it through its paces. I am really looking forward to trying the RII's. They have to be better than my S9's, and I haven't really had any problems with them.
Any chance your drop-thru design works on a 13-ply, or does the extra 2 plies get in the way.
Thanks.

Here is the curved wood for some future speedboards.
It would cost about $16.00 per 48"x10" deck.

Sharky, I made a post in the Soulcarving section about Max, my 48" speedboard prototype. It's 48" x 12" with the dropped through trucks as close to the ends as possible. I have Randal luge trucks on there because it's the only truck wide enough to support center-set wheels on a deck that wide. It flexes so much that the rails bottom out in some sharp turns when I loosen the trucks all the way for just carving. I'm going to reinforce it with some stringers underneath. I also just bought some 48" curved plywood sheets that makes for some nice concave boards without any kicks. They don't flex as much as the flat stock. I'm going to try out the long speedboard at Barrett Junction this weekend, maybe even race it. I'll let you know how it works. I personally believe that longer speedboards will be the future in speedboarding on technical courses but they can be a little tough to get started in some of the "drag race" style events. The shorter speedboards are stable enough at speed without the added wheelbase, but even the longest board with the slowest turning trucks can make the tightest turns on a race course. I think that the longer wheelbases may just carve a cleaner line through the turns and handle better in slides. Until someone podiums on a big gun, everyone will probably stay in the same little 40" and under box. I'll post some pictures soon.

Contact Jody over at EDI/Dregs Skateboards... she can tell you of some agents who may be able to help you. I believe that they need around 30 days or so to activate a policy. No idea what the prices are... HR

Are there any Indy riders out there?! If so, could you give me an idea of how you are setting them up? Currently, I'm using 215s, which seem to do pretty well (my borads range from 146s to 215s, depending on wht the day's drill is...). Granted, I have not been able to reach any higher speeds yet, so I'm in need of some experienced feedback. I'm looking for information on straight downhill as well as curvy roads. I also have some Speed Wheel Road Weapons, which to me, look like they may be too thin for straight, high speeds. Metiver told me a tale of 'wheel oscillation' one time. I think Roskopp was the guinea pig ... might have been Denike... thnx

Hi,
I was wondering why speedboards seem to have such relatively short decks and wheelbases. All else being equal, doesn't a longer wheelbase imply more stability? I was wondering if maybe the shorter boards are a compromise of stability and ability to turn in a race (or any other time you need to). But then, why wouldn't staright runs be taken on longer boards?
I'm asking, because I have been bombing a box stock S9 Pintail. And while I wouldn't say it is going much faster than about the upper 30's, I already feel the need for a more purpose built board. My friend has a Big worm from Afroman, and it feels a lot more stable to me, so I figured I would put a pair of RII's on a 58" board. It should be better than my S9. But even then, it won't be a real downhill board. So now I'm trying to figure out why you would want a shorter board.
Also, I saw on Chris' page that he likes 11 ply. All else equal, whould there benefit to using 13 ply. That is, would the relatively stiffer deck add stability?
Thanks!

Chris, I breifly tried a set of Randals on a longboard over at Purple Skunk, here in the city. Taking into account that they were fairly loose and I was on a flat surface, I have to say that they definately turn different and tighter than my Indys. Which Randal do you consider to be the 'downhill' truck? Judging from the Randal site, http://www.randal.com/default.htm , the ones I rode were the R Longboard trucks. Which model would you recommend? Speed Downhill? Comp-II, Luge-Streetluge? For a long-term user of Indys, its a bit difficult to use/choose another truck. My Indys have been SO good for SO long... Where are you located these days?

Scott, I think it's great that you're getting into the downhill scene. I've been having a blast with it. I hope you get chance to try out the Duck deck and Cherrie's with a set Randal Downhill trucks for comparison. They are the most stable truck that I've ridden so far.

I'm trying to get my old ass back into doing some downhill. I just retired my Roger Hickey Madrid board that my pal Keith Stephenson gave to me ....nearly 20 years ago! I just set up a Mallard, 215s and Cherry Bombs! I'm looking to meet some guys and bomb (or carve) some hills. I'm in San Francisco and can be contacted via email or phone (see below). If I don't see you on the hills, catch me at Vans-Milpitas, Crocker Amazon, Livermore, Alameda, Healdsberg, Visalia..... Before telling it's more like more classical sports, just come to a downhill race, even participate ...... You'll realize that most of the guys are here for the fun of it ..... At least that's was my feelings last summer .... And if you find the leathers ugly .... just try to fall at 60 kmh + without a leather .... Then you'll realize they have a function .... It's not fashion (I think you're more into baggy pants and all ...)
Good luck

Vincent , To get fast -------- just pick a great big hill , put your head down and dont move for a mile and a half . Make sure you have real good wheels because that will affect your speed , The skate board should feel real good under your feet. The full leathers will give you the WILL to go fast ! THATS IT . Know that when you fall that you will slide out of it and the leathers will do there job. If you dont fall your not trying, thats not so its just my way!

ugly racing suits? no . lately with high advaces in kevlar and new color techniques with lether are making the suit bright and alive . u just feel good when riding w/ lether and it boosts confidence and safety . aparently u havent been doing it long enough to have felt the wrath of the Brillo brush . any speed baorder will tell you how fun it is to have chunks of graval rubbed out with a metal brush . personally though and most dont always were the leathers . im 18 and have a suspended drivers liscence and walking up the hill in 75-80degree heat aint fun . so i follow this rule if the hill is Quiet (no cars) and its under 40Mph 60kmh than i ride with just helmet and pads and at least one slide glove . keep it safe late B-rad

geeeeez, this argument is getting realy tiring. when you're looking at $1500 worth of plane tickets just to get to one race what's $500 for a speed suit that may last the whole season????? this is getting stupid. racing costs money. if you have no money you race on weekends with friends. i can't afford the F-1 car i would really like so i drag race a civic on weekends at the local track. them's the breaks! this is a sport that must advance. if the technology stays stagnant and the riders don't get any faster and more technical then the sport will die once again. only to be reborn years in the future by skateboarding hot rodders like hugh and herb.
keep tweeking, tuning and even cheating just a little.... sometimes it's a lack of funds that drives innovation!
if anything, that's what will keep our sport alive and my adrenaline flowing!

This should set the cat amongst the pigeons.......Article from he Times of London, March 20 2001
POWER DRESSING "MAY STRIP SPORTS OF FAIR PLAY"
Olympic gold medallists are likely to owe as much to technology as to talent and training, the Institute of Physics Congress in Brighton will be told today.
Although performance enhancing drugs are banned, performance enhancing equipment and near universal. Fancy suits worn by swimmers, athletes and tennis players are not mere fashion statements, says John Morgan,a mechanical engineer at the University of Bristol. Lycra suits make the body more aerodynamic and improve muscle performance. "Tests in the USA showed a 12% boost in force and power reduction" Dr. Morgan sais."That's wy Martina Hingis wears a dress with a lycra sleeve on her right arm, and Denise Lewis threw the javelin in the Olympic heptathlon wearing the same kind of garment. She didn't wear it for other events.
Dr. Morgan questions whether the advance of technology might not be stripping sport of it's sporting qualities. "I saw an advert in a rugby magazine for shirts imoregnated with a high -tech material to help the ball stick. The ad actually boasted that the shirt gave "an unfair advantage"."
Governing bodies of most sports have been left behind by the advance of technology, and are unsure whether to embrace or ban it, he says.
Garments made of lycra or similair artificial fibres were much in evidence at the Sydney Olympics. The Australian athlete Cathy Freeman won the 400 metres clad head to toe in a bodysuit developed by Nike to shave fractions of a second off her time.
Lycra, invented by DuPont in 1958 can be produced froma fibre between three times thinner to seven times thicker than a human hair. Dr. Morgan says "In sprint events it reduces drag by allowing the air to flow more smoothly over it, but it has a second benefit. By compressing the muscles it makes them more efficient. Wearing lycra garments is like wearing a man made spring. It seems to condition the response of the nerves in the muscle. The muscles don't have to move so much, so they don't have to work so hard and don't get tired."
Swimmers can gain an advantage by wearing suits that mimic a shark's skin, with a subtle pattern of ridges that reduce drag. The U.S. helmsman Dennis Connor won the America's Cup in stars and stripes, which had a ripple effect hull. "Since then it's been banned in racing" Dr Morgan said.
At the same congress, Ross Anderson of the University of Limerick will say that fairness depends on whether the application of technology leads to advantages that all can enjoy, not just those who are most generously sponsored.

I'm 18 and have been longboarding for about 1 year. But it 's only recently that i tried speedboarding.First:of course it provides huge sensations and i really liked it .But,when i looked it videos and magazines to see how pros do to get that fast i saw these ugly racesuits. So i'd like to know if you always ride dressed like this (or if it's only for contests). Then even if speedboarding is a good way to get good feelings dont you think it looks like more classical sports(both mechanical and athletical sports).

How great is that ! You can race for the soul of it and try as hard as you can to get a 1th. I hope that my answer was what you are looking for?
