The differences in thermal expansion/contraction should lead to premature loss of the ceramic coating. A better idea is to use a combination of silicone-nitride and tungsten-carbide balls giving the best of both worlds.

Has anyone tried out the hybrid ceramic bearings? The ones that just have the ceramic coat. How do you like them compared to normal ceramic bearings?

Just cleaned my shielded PT ABEC 7's for the first time.
I like that they have steel cages. So much better to use any type of cleaner you want.
I used naptha and a soft toothbrush to gently scrape away the grease they used. They came out sparkly new.
I then lubed em with Bones speed cream. Man! What a difference. These are faster than before now. They spin like they have motors in em.
Recommended to all.

I second Dave G's comments. I haven't tried the ceramics yet, but I'm real happy with the ABEC 7s. It would take one hell of an exceptional bearing to get me to switch brands. Ed sells quality bearings at a good price with great service. A combination that I haven't seen beat by anyone else.

Bones 6 Ball

Well I got the Bones 6 ball today. First to anyone who will order them, I give props to solidskate.com for customer service. They had no problem switching the 10mm spacer to the 8mm I needed, which saved me 4 bucks. Now the bearings, appearance-totally sick, you have to see them w/out the seal. -they just look cool. ride-very quite on day one. after a few hours of skating, they are just like swiss. speed-compared side by side with swiss-the six ball are with out a doubt faster. -that's all my opinion on them, judge for yourself. I will post updates on longevity. oh yea, my balls are BIGGER!!!

Hey everyone, Just got a new tube of Pleasure Tools abec 7 sealed bearings. WOW! Super-smooth under load, I don't even think i will Speed Cream them. Ed at PT got the bearings to me in 2 days, which is pretty fast. From what I can tell Ed has a great company going. Long live Pleasure Tools!

It looks like everyone has questions regarding OUST products. I am a personal friend of Carl (owner of OUST) and have worked with him over the past few years on quite a few different products. The guys a damn genius at modifying existing products - and has enough engineering experience to shame 99% of the people working in the SKATE related industry. As soon as the website is up and running you will be able to post questions there and purchase the fastest damn bearings available. The address is http://www.oustinc.com and it should be available in the coming weeks.

"Ceramic is harder, more wear resistant, and has much higher compressive strength than steel. This means you are riding on a smaller "flat spot" on the bearing ball under load, thus less friction. However ceramic has less toughness (more likely to chip or crack), so I would agree with erok that ceramic is not the best choice for abusive applications, street skating, etc. I always like to point out that at 25 mph your friction is probably around 50% aero, 48% rolling resistance in the tires, and 2% bearings, spend you money on good wheels first."
hes smack on with this idea only resistance from the body is a whopping 70-85%-wheels= 20-45% and bearings only just above 0.5% at its highest. all this from a fortran program used to determine resistance in formula 1 cars and probably the reason they use bog standard bearings in fast cars.

at the recent boardfest in sheffield UK, simon levene had "oust" bearings fitted in his turner la costa's.
one very gentle flik of the wheels had them spinning for well over a minute
Impressive, but at what cost?

I ride along the beach all the time and the PT sealed (I use the abec 5's cause they're so darn inexpensive) and they're quiet and low maintenance. For a guy who rides near sand and hates cleaning bearings (I have no garage or yard and the roommates don't care for the smell of solvent in the morning... smells like ... victory) the pt sealed are sweet. can't say enough good things. Buy a bunch and give 'em to the neighborhood kids when they get nasty.

Just tried the PT ceramics for the first time the other night and WOW - amazing bearings. These things are super fast right out of the box (er, tube) and the price is right! I wonder how they will hold up compared to non-ceramics? I never thought there would be such a noticeable difference between ceramic and non-cermamic bearings. These PT's will be in all my race wheels for sure. Thanks Ed! Gareth

Tom- I was/am still looking into the same 3 sets of bearings. I decided that the ceramics may not be the way to go unless you only use them for downhill on a smooth surface. I have heard they may chip if used on a surface with some cracks or bumps. I don't know how much truth this has but it made sense. I'm currently stuck between the pt abec 7's and the bones 6 ball. I figure since about 1/2 of my riding is around campus, steel balls may be better. I will post a review of the six ball if i get them as soon as the snow melts in Illinois. Anyone Else have an opinion?
