Hey Mike, I'm digging the blend of bike tech talk mixed with the slalom. I used to be a total bike geek, I've got a Litespeed Mtn bike and Road bike, a Cannondale, a Mazi, and a MONTY Trials bike. Which brings me to my point, I am trying to unload my trials bike on another site, but had an idea. Since I am just trying to get money($175)from one toy to buy others, is there anyone who would like to do a trade for this bike? It's a Monty T-219 Modified trials bike with 20" wheels and hops all over the place!
I need wheels, trucks just name it. Sorry if I should have posted this on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.-Geo

You up for some skating this Sunday? Nothing too crazy. I just got some stitches in my hand on Friday so I need to avoid falling on it. Slalom maybe?
Send email or call

I've still got my old Columbus SLX Bianchi and 531 Team Ti Raleigh track bikes, but I'm looking for a new road ride to replace a Suntour Superbe Pro equipped Trek 2500 I've ridden since '92, and I can get a Dura Ace 10 OCLV Trek for under 3K at wholesale. I'd like a nice Richard Sachs with Record, but frankly it's a tool, not a wall hanger, and I don't want something I'll feel bad about if I ball it up.
I do like to admire the 66' Cinelli B that came in the trash pile in the garage of my house, but it's not a "magical" steel ride. It's just a crappy shifting, crappy braking noodly old bike.
Fibreflex Hester? Pocket Pistols TS/Hybrid? which do YOU want to race?...

the 1st 4 years I lived in San Diego I didn't even own a car. Had a Schwinn Super Sport that was my 'daily driver' and a Tomaso that I rode on the weekends for my long hauls up the coast. Columbus Tubing is the real deal!! I'm old fashioned, I love steel.
Geezer-X, if it were'nt for slalom taking all my cash I'd be racing BMX right now. I've got SWEEET 24" PK Ripper that's as race ready as any of my slalom boards.

It was getting into road racing in 1978 that used up all the time I'd been spending skating. I'll be out for a loop in Rock Creek park in DC tomorrow morning, run cones in the afternoon, and a fixed gear ride Sunday with a nice park session at Lansdowne afterwards. Bikes and skates go perfectly together. Was anyone into BMX back in the day? I just swapped a crusty Honda CB750 for a sweet 1982 GT 26" BMX Cruiser...

I'll tell you Simon, after talking to Maysey, sounds like he is hauling arse over the hills! But for me, the hills are fine for going down. Even when I raced, I didn't get up the hills to good, but then again, there aren't to many hills on a velodrome.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get to your side of the world. I'm trying like crazy. I always seem to pull it off. LaCosta, Breck, & Morro Bay will all be awesome events this year. Also, good places to tip a few pints..........

Hey Farid! I'm doing good. Weak dollar makes US boards cheap here. I know what you're saying though. Don't know yet if I'm gonna make it over stateside. I'd like to. I don't like the sound of Marin. Too many hills to haul my arse over!

Simon-That's exactly what I'm thinking while riding the bike....fitter, faster for slalom....my quads are growing right now....'it's not a tuma'...it's going to be cool to have an even lower center of gravity with the extra bulk. Man, oh man...the road is a fun place to ride. As a matter of fact, the 65 miler myself and my two buddies did last Thursday is alledgedly one of Lance's favorite training rides when he's in this area. Plenty of climbing...or should I say a butt-load of climbing, spectacular views of Stinson Beach and Bolinas lagoon and heaps of fast, turny decents. I found one turn in particular that was considerably tougher than the rest. My buddy and I were dicing it up at around 30 mph when we came into this tricky corner. I led and it looked like a typical turn. As I apexed it, I realized the turn was squareing off. I grabbed a handful of brakes but began to drift both tires. I damn near flung myself into the guard rail at 30, with nothing much more than a helmet on. Funny thing was, my buddy who was trailing me, has done this ride many many times and followed my line. When he realized I was headed for disaster, he backed way off. Luckily, I clipped out, stuck my leg out for counter balance, regained traction and pulled it back together just before crossing the line on the shoulder and hitting the rail. The rail would have kept me from launching myself over a significant cliff.
Crazy.
But Fun.....
Question-Anyone have any pointers on how to get my ass to Paris this year? Other than spending some serious dough? Perhaps there's some cheap way to go, like riding on a FedEx plane or something?
As for racing this season, I'm going to focus on trying to get to Paris (oh please oh please oh please). More than likely I'll get to Breck, La Costa and the Worlds and perhaps some minor races around Cali.
I just had a great interview this morning for a job that would put me back on the weekend warrior program, instead of the weekday off schedule I have right now at the bike shop. SoCal, watch out. I've got a reliable car and am planning to head your way for as many JPL, WLAC and whatever other races I can get away for once I switch jobs...again!!
It's raining here in SF again....arrg. No skating today and probably no bike. I'm thinking pizza and beer.

Smokestack,
Things are good, how are you? I'm trying to figure out how/what/when/where/why on getting to the Paris WC and Brands Hatch. Airline tickets are really high and good ol' George W has made the dollar so weak it might be tough to pull it all together. Are you going to make it to any of the races stateside this year? If not, bring your bike and romp around the Marin Headlands w/ Masey. f#@!ing beautiful up there.

Miko, can you say hello to Steve from me? I knew him when he worked at NHS. Can you ask him if knows where the vid he shot from a car of me slaloming a hill near SC in about 88/89? He might remember. I think it was for a Strange Notes video. Gavin O'Brien was driving the car. I took a big slam and they caught it from the car. I wanna copy. Thanks!
I never realised there were so many road racers on this forum. That's all anyone needs, a fitter Mike Maysey. If it wasn't 4 degrees I'd be outside with a biting northerly I'd be out on mine.

Great session tonight! In attendance were Fish, Hutson, Keenan (and several of his cronies from the Consolidated days). Anyway, the regular crew on tuesdays are great, and it's nice to see so many familiar faces. HC, Clayton! We missed you. Now if we can get Sgt. Holl, John Kim, and Jumpin' Julius to come out, we'll have a major reunion on our hands.

Funny you mention track racing...I've seen many people out riding fixies lately. I've been thinking about that very thing. I've never done it. I've been putting in many road miles lately. Yesterday I rode about 55 miles with a bunch of climbing out at the Marin Headlands.
Speaking of fittness...there 'might' be a slalom related reason for all this biking lately along with the fun of beating your friends up and down the hills! : )

Farid-Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, Correct, I was wrong in calling it the "Classic".
I think at the time it was the second largest Road Race in America, I think it is still going on to this day.
Mike-If you ever get a chance to see a Track Bike race go! I got to go a couple times as a kid, I think the Velodrome we went to was in San Fernando Valley, Encino maybe or somewhere near there, its one of the raddest games of cat and mouse, I didnt understand it at first, but when you see how the game is played its killer.

Make money bicycling

Hey Mike,
Well now that your forum has turned into a bicycling forum. You can make a ton of money racing velodrome (Keirin Racing). Go to Japan, teach English while you're there to get started, and try to get into velodrome racing. There is a circuit of 50 velodromes nationwide, with gambling. Think of it as horse racing/betting but with people on bikes instead. Average earnings per racer are around US$300,000/year. Now if there was only some way of making a living skating slalom. Hmmm... Slalom + gambling...
